View Full Version : Is it easy/cheap to put a back box back on?

Just finished my xmas shopping for the kids so skint as I will ever be and my back box falls off my car. My first though: Great, just what I need when I have no cash! So, I took it off and took the photos below, allowing me to find out exactly what I have as well as I bought the car with the back box installed.

My question is, is this an easy enough job to fix where all i need to do is stick the clamp back or replace the clamp? I'm not uber DIY but I know my way around screwdrivers, socket set and wrenches. I only need this car to last me another couple of months.

Luckily the car doesn't really sound any different thanks to my amazingly loud peco boxer back box. Is it safe to drive without for a few days?

Would think if u buy a new clap and rubber hanger it would be easy to fix and not expesive either, and as for driving around without a backbox my mates fell off his astra and he drove around for months without it on and it was fine

Dont drive around with no backbox on. You think its fine, it most likely isnt.

Clamps are cheap and fitting it is v easy.

Really easy job! Got a new clamp for euro part for something like £3 quid. Will take 5 minutes atleast and all you'll need is 10mm spanner. . to tighten it up. Found exhaust paste helped it seal properly :y:

iirc the clamp is £3.40 and new rubbers are 98p each at my local DMA place, may be a few P difference.
less than a tenner to fix basically and you can do it yourself.
if your doing it yourself, it may be easier to take the spare wheel out. I find it easiest to put the rubbers on the back box first then lift the back box up and hook it on, then do the clamp up. Put some fairly liquid on the hanger first if they are a tight fit.

thats about all i can think of really, its a really simple job.
a garage would probably charge a fiver to refit if your polite.
and if your driving the car around for abit, put the back box in the boot and if you get pulled you can claim it only just fell off. ;)

easy as pi mate just a new clamp and maybe rubbers if there shot only a few quids worth of parts from your local auto factor. The mid pipe looks a tad rusty but if its only for a few months it shouldn't be a big problem. Easy to fit too just get it hung on the rubbers then put the clamp on after.

I still have the rubber mounts hanging on the car, so i'm good to go with those.

I can't find the clamp on eurocarparts does anyone have a link to somewhere online i can buy or can give a recommendation for somewhere to go? Do I need to check size or is it pretty standard stuff?

What bout a 'wire exhaust gasket'? WTF is that and where does that get fitted?

New clamp, and some exhaust sealant as mentioned above. Put rubber bracket back on then put exhaust sealant on both ends, get a mate or something solid to hold it in place. Then do up the clamp and dont drive for at least an hour to let it cure

That doesn't say it fits a VTR. Only 1.1 and VTS. Are they all the same? (sorry me=noob)

To my knowledge yes. . Although really would be easier and quicker just to go to a motor factors. . must be one around you somewhere and get one for there :) No wait time then

this will work.

just go to ANY car place, and tell them you need an olive clamp for your back box, ha;lfords will even have them (at about £400 lmao)

they wont need to order anything in, they should have one on the shelf.
