Looking to buy a new car as getting bored of the accord (got it for free). Looking to get a Vtr/s or considering a Mr2 turbo or Na. Saw that the turbos mpg is shit to be honest but didnt know what I was expecting. Anyone had one before or experience with one?
Edit: Mk2 Mr2

Do you have much experience of rwd? If so go for the turbo, if not go for the n/a and even then still be careful. They can be really snappy but if your sensible you should be okay.
My mate had a turbo, it was quick! Sideways far too often though and eventually he wrote it off at 70+ loosing the back.

Get the mr2 roadster or mrs as they are know in Japan.
Known as a very very nice handling car and about vts pace so not immense but not too slow either...

Such a pathetic way of chosing a car lol
"don't buy a powerful rwd car, you won't be able to handle it"
pffftt... more power = more sideways = more fun :)

its not that they are tail happy, its that they are mid engined so a little trickier to balance, especially these days they are cheap and people don't put decent tyres or suspension bushes on them
MK1 SC is where its at.

But what's the point in having a car you smash up in a few weeks? Or that your scared to drive because of its reputation?
I started small with bikes and worked my way up and am a ten times better rider because of it.

The Mr2 is getting old very old even. We run quite a few Mk2s as race cars we hire out. You will be luck to find a good one at a sensible price these days. Only way we found to get good ones was fresh imports with low miles on. Not cheap though. Don't forget insurance on imports is a lot as well. I don't know how old you are but the turbo is classed as a very high risk car any most insurers will not take them on.

I'm just turning 23 with 3yrs NCB. The insurance on the 1.8 accord is about £700ish a year. Love the clean look of them, de-spoilered etc. Only thing putting me off is 1. the age of most of them, 2. Turbo mpg is low 20's iirc :S

If you'd made this thread 2 weeks earlier you could have had my anniversary edition NA cheap..only needed a new front bumper but i decided to let the mwrite it off in the end.
As said, they're tail happy and they do snap back VERY easily, mainly because of the weight of the engine being at the rear, condition of tyres etc.
If you do get one however, look out for rusty rear sills on both sides, rusty front boot bottom, air in cooling system, head gasket failure, leaking coolant pipes are VERY common on them due to a stupid fucking designed bracket..simply changed thogh with some radiator hose bypassing the pipes in question.
They're lovely cars to drive, i'd get the turbo if you can afford insurance but make sure it's been looked after..the pipes from hell are a bitch to change on them (hense the name..it's some of the pipes related to the turbo iirc) and make sure it's got matching/decent tyres and that they're on a staggered setup (wider at the back by 20-30mm).
Don't let the mileage on some of them put you off..but it depends on how much you have to spend and if you're looking for a project or a long term, driveable car.
There's a very nice couple of turbos for sale on the owners club atm..they're nto cheap though for what they are.

Cheers mate. Seems like the NA is a big compromise but is just the price of petrol at the moment that puts me off. Saw the Mr2's and thought "YESSSS" but to be honest I'm looking for a change to anything old and quick at below or about £700.

I had a Mk2 MR2 N/A. Was a rev2 with the 158bhp engine. It wasn't lightening quick, but it wasn't slow either. For comparison sake's, it sat on the tail of my brothers old EP3.
They are fun cars, superb to drive, and have a nice feel to them. Never found mine to be shit of fuel, averaged around 30mpg around town.
But for £700, you won't get a turbo worth having. Will probably struggle to get a decent N/A for that sort of money too.
Im going to get another when the better weather comes in. A Rev3 or 4, preferably in Super Red.

Iv got an Mr2 N/A in fact iv just replaced it with a clio sport. its a rev 1 with 158 bhp engine. Its not too bad mine hasnt been the most reliable ( electrical faults) but when its been running its been quite good its not as snappy as people make out but when its wet it does have a tendency to suddenly go but so long as your paying attention and at a low enough speed its easy enough to catch. The engine is quite good especially above 5.5k.
The age of mine has been a problem mostly with Andrew watt car parts as they seem to want a deposit on any bits that i need as well as having to wait a day or two for the parts to be delivered. Mines also averaged 19mpg for the first 2 weeks i owned it :( after that it went up a bit to 26-28.

I got a mk2 rev2 turbo and I love it as said already they do like to step out especially when your driving a boosted one although mine will only ever do it in bad conditions if the roads dry etc it hangs and grips really well.
Not sure where people are getting the mpg from as mines 270bhp and very good for what it is I'd say it's 35mpg or so unless driven really hard and motorway runs it's even better.
If you get one just don't floor it everywhere or it's just a matter of time before it gets totalled, I do really like the motor but I miss my old civic for being able to drive it hard in all conditions and not just spin up or slide.
Also my insurance is £580 fully comp 7yrs Ncb at 25.
