Hi im looking for some info regarding my new second hand but never fitted quaife quick rack.

basically i was buying the complete steering rack built up with the quaife bits fitted, i then found out it was fitted in the later type steering rack housing which apparently dosnt work with the quaife item. so instead i just bought the rack and pinion. but the lad i bought it off couldnt be assed to remove the quaife bits and sent me the built up rack.

anyway the rack turned up today and ive turned it by hand and all seems fine so im abit confused

there is a part number on the rack which is...
[S10] 96 204 705 30 [652]

can anyone tell me if this is the right type of rack housing but converted to take the later style steering arms as it looks like that might be the case due to one side being shiney and the other half abit crusty?

any help would be appreciated here are some pics

the quiafe rack only fits on a manual rack, there are two types of manual racks, ealry pug ones pre 94 came with 32mm bearing, the one you need is a 1994 on which use 35mm bearing.

you then need a non pas colum to suit, and the two bolt steering arm setup.

the quiafe rack is design for the two bolt steering arm setup. ( very rare now) but you can get the correct rack from Andrew Page, that what i have done then just swap the interals to the quiafe parts.

you cant use that knuckle type racks.

get on 106RR there all the information on the group buy thread on there on what you need to convert it all.

the part need is Manual rack from 106, ealry one before 1994 had 32mm bearing casing, which is not good as quiafe used the 35mm bearing. they where changed some point between 1993-1994.

then you will need is a manual coloum

and the steerring arm setup, not the knuckle type one.

i got the whole lot from my quiafe rack for 50 quid from spoox for rack/coloum/steering arms. came with 32mm bearing rack, but got the correct rack from Andrew page new for 40 quid.

http://www.106rallyeforum.com/forum2008/showthread.php?t=76949&page=12 this thread might help you.

look on page 12 has diagrams of both types.

but andy the wierd thing is, its fitted in the above rack and it seams to work fine  which is wierd. ill change it if i need to but i cant see why or how its wrong?
i know all the internet says it shouldnt work but it does haha so i dont want to spend money if i can avoid it but i dont also want to fit it, to have it fall apart on the road :)

Maybe it not the quiafe part inside there, or he modified it to suit. But look at them diagrams knuckle types are totally different inside.

Quiafe only supply two bolt type, looking at the exploded view diagrams on 106rr, looks like the input shaft will fit both type racks, I would check you have both parts of the quiafe rack there. Only other way is to modified the quiafe part to suit the knuckle type end.

its definitely got the quaife bit fitted as the part number matches and the notches on the rack are bigger than standard.
i need to take it appart tomorrow to see how he's done it, i have a few spare racks but there all s2 ones so ill pull one of them appart at the same time to check for differences.
if it all looks wrong/sketchy ill buy a earlier type rack as ive been offered two and ill just switch over the steering arm mount as i cant be assed faffing about stripping the rack from the body :)
cheers andy

It may work but does mean that the quiafe parts look at the exploded view diagrams on 106rr will see the internals are different on the two bolt type and the knuckle type. But input shafts look the same, maybe he changed only pinion shaft?

Well all I know is quiafe only use the two bolt type rack for the 106 quick rack. So it modified to fit or he fit one part of the quiafe kit.

Looking at the diagrams ill say the quiafe pinion shaft will fit both racks, but the rack itself quiafe suit is a two bolt type one only.

the lad who i bought it off was in the RR group buy and definitely has the 2 bolt rack but hes managed to fit it in the s2 rack :panic: i know both parts are fitted in the rack as it wouldnt work otherwise or not as smoothly at least.
theres only 1 way to find out and thats to take it apart so ill do it tomorrow and report back with pics and stuff :)

Well it been modified in some way then.

Well it been modified in some way then.

well its either that or its just a coincidence it fits. im not sure how the s2 knuckle works as it may just clamp around the rack and bolt tight instead of bolting through the rack. thats what i need to find out tomorrow as that exploded diagram dosnt show exactly whats happening

right the mystery is solved!
after taking it apart ive realised all the lad has done is a very retarded thing and thats replacing the m12 bolt with a m8 which slides straight past the rack and dosnt do anything it should.
i realised by taking apart another rack that they use a m12 pinch bolt to secure the steering arm body to the rack. so by doing what hes done if i put it on a car with the wheels on the road and turned the steering wheel the rack would just slide past the bolt inside the body and the wheels would stay straight so pretty dangerous haha

so ill now be buying the associated parts to get it done properly so if anyone has a spare rack and would like to sell me this part including steering arms id be very grateful :)

So wasn't really fitted then? Good job you didn't just fit it.

Can get all the steering arm setup from Andrew page for about 60 quid. Might need to get the citreon part numbers and cross ref across as citreon stop making a few parts.

Search eBay I found a few take some to find the two bolt type steering arm setup as are rare, but can get everything new from Andrew page, just need part numbers I had them written down ill look for them and post them up.

basically no haha atleast its fitted in the rack body properly as i can still use that :phew: but yeah really glad i didnt just stick it on and hope for the best.
i think ill be getting new arms and TRE's from my local motorfactors but for the steering arm bracket thingy ill be getting used or from a brakers as i can see that being abit fiddly to get hold of :)
