View Full Version : Rover Hate / Appreciation Thread

Due to a few people having opinions of Rovers in a thread completely unrelated to it, I thought it an idea to create a thread.

Discuss your favourite / least favourite Rovers here.

For me, I don't like many at all other than:

MG's too? ZR with a Tomcat engine can be quite a weapon. I'd still never own one though.

Rover BRM's are fucking brilliant.
Rovers have made some awesome cars over the years.

Tomcats, 600ti, BRM, Metro, BRM (did I mention that one?!)
MG ZS 180's are amazing cars to drive too.

Now for the 'Saxo's are better than Rovers'

But Saxos are so much better than Rovers...

I'm not actually sure lol

The only part on the 6r4 that was metro was the headlights. Everything else was custom.

I only like the rover mini and the Tomcat can be a giggle.

i had an MGZR turbo diesel. It used to blow fuses every time is rained, it leaked, ate MAF sensors for laughs and sounded like an old stationary engine at idle! it was terrible :'(
i liked the car though weirdly.
i quite like the MGZS V6's with the little vent in the front wing and the square spoiler. I dont know much about them, but they look and sound nice!

Dad a few years ago used to have a Rover 400 like below

http://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NzY4WDEwMjQ=/$T2eC16RHJHQE9nzEzMOMBQdn7F7QYg~~48_79.JPG

I think he had it a year or so. After a long drive out on the way home it spaffed steam out the bonnet (bells ringing) eventually got it home, engine cooled but it kep drinking the water as he was topping it up. He goes to go to work on the morning fires up, nothing. AA out, spark plugs out fires it water spitting out. :( Dad was a tad upset, he loved the car tbh. He would never buy another like but it was nice whilst it was working..

Theres a saying that goes round quite a lot on the rover forums

'good cars get you from A to B, Great cars get you into trouble'

Sounds about right for a rover TBH.

Aye, couldn't agree more. Its been good to me so far (touch wood) 125k miles and still going strong.

Its only on its third head gasket too! I haven't changed it in my ownership either.

Probably keep it for another year until I've finished what I've started and I'll move onto something different.

Had my Mg Zr a year and its been not a single fault and passed its MOT easy.. Far more reliable than the saxo tbh which was hell.

200 pound (Remap and Sdi's) and i had 150bhp and 250 lb/ft of torque and no headgasket worries on the diesel.

For the price of them these days thier underrated.

They are cracking cars, I was tempted to part with mine for a Derv cause I do a fair amount of miles, the tuning potential on the derv is quite good, compared to the VVC where anything after an exhaust will cost you a massive fortune.

Aren't the diesel engines out of a BMW therefore chain driven as well?

Nope. The 75 and ZT use a BMW derived engine, although I was told by someone it's not entirely a BMW engine. Perhaps it was developed with them. Anyway, the ones in the ZS and the ZR and before them in the Rovers, like the 25, 45 etc is the L series engine. It's still a good engine though.

Correct, its a BMW derived engine, but its meant to be no where near as good as a BMW engine.
The L-Series derv's are meant to be the ones to go for, meant to be bullet proof besides a couple of niggly things, but you find that with almost any engine.

Nothing wrong the K-series providing you know how to build it or someone who can. Also keeping it in serviced regularly with the correct coolant is key.

The biggest memory I have of a Rover was a friday night when I pulled into a Shell station in my old Impreza STi where 5 chavs were standing next to a ridiculous looking 400 with a massive intercooler on the front. They followed me out and up the road, hissing their dump valve, trying to get me to race :homme:

Had a 214 for around 6 months as I heard how nippy the k series engines are..... For a n/a 1.4 they're pretty pokey! I reckon it is quicker than my VTR on the straights, especially 3rd gear onwards. Had a headgasket done just before I bought it so no worries there! I normally hate cone induction kits as they're rubbish for performance..... But on the Rover it sounded awesome above 4k lol

Would have another one if I needed a cheap car...... Aslong as the headgasket was done lol.

it was mate, the engine looked almost unused.
BUT the story was, an american had shipped it over to the US to rally and enjoy, which he did, just not as much as he had hoped, ran out of room and decided he wanted rid.

the guy who now owns it who lives just around the corner thought "FUCK IT" went to the bank, got a loan and brought it back here, he still races it occasionally i believe but its kept super clean between races.

a car im so glad i finally managed to see in the flesh tbh, always loved them.

first car was a metro, only had 4 gears and was painfully slow, didnt have it long enough for anything to go wrong tho after a woman in an audi q7 decided to wrap my car around hers. lucky she hit the passenger side because it crumpled like an empty bag
