I'm Tom, and I appear to have bought another project car.

You might remember I used to own this:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/George.jpg
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/George2.jpg

Which soon turned into this:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/Front-1.jpg
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/rear-1.jpg

I've had 2 cars since and I can't stop looking at them again. Unfortunately nothing really came up that was affordable so I put off the search. Then this popped up about a mile down the road from me

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/762894DB-FFD1-4164-BA5F-8A7F74D255CB-6802-000001CE5DD1E882.jpg

It's a 1990 V-spec on 90K Miles. No tax, no MOT and requires the sills welding (A job I will do myself). Best of all it's £500.00 delivered to my door.

Plans are to sort the welding, detail the paint, lose the front plate, lose the horrible wheels and lower it. The car already has a 4-2-1 Manifold, decat, twin tailpipe, leather interior, electric windows, power steering, 1.8 brakes and a lsd so it should be a lot of fun.

It's going to live in my garage and work will be done properly and slowly. I'll aim to have it on the road by september, but I'm more than happy to wait til the following summer.

I'll get some photos of my own when it's here. Should be arriving on the 21st.

Ta.

Good colour!

how bad are the sills?

So glad you've got another, had a massive soft spot for the camo green one :D

holdawayt

Compared to my last one the sills on this are great, just the passenger side one needs cutting out and replacing. My last one went pretty much up to the wheel arch!

I really don't see the appeal in these, I think they are no short of horrid. Having said that I do like the outcome of your previous one bar the colour.

holdawayt
18th December 2012, 14:02
Thanks. I think...

Have you driven one before? I was very much against the queer little things before I took one round a track. They just drive so well. It's a bit of a benefit that you can make them look alright too. But I'm mainly in it for the way they drive.

Nah never driven one tbh I'm somewhat the MX5 virgin. Maybe driving one will sway my opinion.

Are you getting another set of drifts?

p.s. no need to change your avatar now.

holdawayt
18th December 2012, 14:07
Nah won't be going back to drifts. Nice wheels but I want this one to be different. The paint quality was a little disappointing on the Rotas too.

Simon0014
18th December 2012, 23:26
Glad you've got another mate! Which coilies you opting for this time?

As cool as rota's look they are in essence a reasonably expensive replica wheel of enkei and volks alloys so I'm pretty glad you're going for something different! :y:

Cheers Si, well my last one was on the budget race land coilovers. Although they were nice and cheap, the ride was evil and my back was ruined after a few months.
Hopefully going for HSDs or Gaz Pro Gold.

Dayum, got game son. Got game.

Keep meaning to get my coilovers on, but I need to sort out replacing my roof.
HSD's are what I went for, haven't got mine on yet, but after being in a friends 5 with the same coilovers on. I'd reccomend them!
Not the nicest of rides, but no doubt somewhat nicer than it would be with the Raceland equivilents on etc.

Still quite firm, but more responsive and less 'bouncy' if that makes sense.:wall:

Sold my charged eunos couple of weeks ago. Miss it muchly, think its one of those cars that until you own one, you hate then.

:)

holdawayt
26th December 2012, 23:45
Things have been progressing nicely, until today.

I noticed that one of the rear wheels was toeing in excessively which would suggest that the car has been slid into a kerb. Its either a bent bottom wishbone bolt or a bent upper wishbone. Most people who have had to remove this bolt know exactly how difficult it is. Its really stuck in there well.

So ive left it in a few pieces overnight, the joys of owning a project that you dont need to et fixed for the morning!

In other news the car has cleaned up really well, the interior is in great nick and is no longer damp. Engine needs a service then it'll be ready for its welding.
I'll put some pictures up tomorrow.

holdawayt
26th December 2012, 23:45

Pic of the wheel before showing the toe in:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/image_zps3e69deef.jpg

And after the new bolt was put in:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/D1FB584A-8F90-42E7-AD08-29947B154008-17165-0000043F741210FD.jpg

Still needs to have the alignment done but that's one horrible job sorted.

Oh and a random interior shot.

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/15B8EDD9-1106-4FC9-9059-F50B5A003719-17165-0000043F633FF2FB.jpg

Tomorrow is service day. Then it'll be ready for its MOT.

holdawayt
30th December 2012, 19:24
Run out of jobs? Me? Never.

Done the full service today, but I also noticed a new coolant leak. It's coming from the water pump which is both a bit of a pain and a bit of an excuse to change the cambelt. So I'm not too fussed. I'll be sorting all of that when the car is up and running legally though. I'll take it to my house and have use of the power tools at home rather than the council garage.

holdawayt
3rd January 2013, 13:14

Tom.

You will get bored of doing the dull much needed bits, then get sick of it, and sell.

Top of the list should be zorst, lows, wheels.

THEN do the gay bits! :A:

holdawayt
3rd January 2013, 18:55
Nah I'm enjoying doing this one properly. Already like the exhaust. The wheels and suspension will set me back over a grand so I'm not going to rush into that. More important things to sort first.

3rd January 2013, 19:44
i loved mine on hsd's didnt think it was bouncy at all and would recommend them over gaz ones any day as to adjust the height on gaz coilovers you have to put preload on the spring which makes it more bouncy where as the hsd coilovers are adjusted by the platfrom if that makes sence

Yeah my heart is set on the HSDs now. Just need to save some cash!

All of that for a pigging cambelt and waterpump change. It's the first time I've done a cambelt and it went really well. Next it's brakes!

holdawayt
6th January 2013, 19:22

Fair play. I havent got the 'go' in me to attempt mine. One tick out and its bye cams :/

Are you changing the clutch aswell?

holdawayt

Nope, clutch is brand new. I wouldn't fancy doing a transverse engine, you have lots of room in a longitudinal lump like this.

you going turbo then?

holdawayt
6th January 2013, 20:49
Nope, no plans to. Id like an S14 in a few years, i can enjoy this as it is. Might look into bodies for the noise but turbo builds arent our families speciality so if it goes ball up I'd be on my own!

Sounds like some nice plans.
I just ended ended up picking an eunos up the other day and i'm doing the cambelt, pump and replacing the thermostat housing because the t-piece is leaking. Should be doing that tomorrow.
Gonna be keeping an eye on your thread!

holdawayt
11th January 2013, 21:41
Cheers bud. Yep I'm on here, nutz and edition38 lol.

It's a simple job, just remember to make note of the timing marks and watch the inlet cam when refitting the belt. There's a valve spring that wants to push the cam out a tooth.

One question for you... HOW THE FECK DID YOU UNDO THE CRANKSHAFT BOLT????
Mine wont budge!

holdawayt
12th January 2013, 19:52
Ah ok, mine came off with massive ease (which was worrying). Normally you'd need to use a massive breaker bar or a bit of scaffold. They're an absolute nightmare.

Make sure it's in gear and get a friend to stamp on the brakes, that might help.

If all else fails, I'm sure you can undo the 4 x 10mm bolts off the pulley itself and it'll fit over the big central bolt. Try that.

I managed to get the crankshaft bolt undone after I found something I could you to lock it in place. Thought I was on a roll until I had to take the power steering and air con off, then take the air con bracket off:wall: all for 1 piggin bolt.

Are you wanting to upgrade the brakes at all?

I'm pinching some carriers off a mate so i can run 1.8 discs, been told it makes a nice improvement.

holdawayt
14th January 2013, 23:31
My brakes are pretty much useless at the moment, but because the car is locked away and not used - I'm unsure of the issue. I've been told that its got brand new discs and pads fitted so they might need bedding in, but I'm going to rebuild the calipers anyway for peace of mind.

I'd definitely recommend the 1.8 setup though.

After pay day I'll be stripping down the rear calipers and rebuilding them with new components. The fronts were replaced with new items back in 2009, so they shouldn't have failed yet. I'll still strip them down to have a look. There's something wrong that's for sure.

Apologies for the boring updates, once all of this repair work is sorted I can start on the shiny bits!

Gaskets etc have turned up today so I can crack on with the cambelt / waterpump. Only a month after I started but ahwell no need to rush such things. I've also got my brake caliper rebuild kit in the post.

All seems like boring stuff but it means that I can get the car to a Bodyshop ready for its welding. Then the fun can begin.

Updates when the thing runs again.

I've now done the cam belt and water pump 4 times in february alone, did this one in 3 hours lol. Pretty sure i could do one with my eyes closed now.

I've also rebuilt the brake calipers and they feel fantastic.

Then I can sort the welding and enjoy the car in the summer!

Pic of the rebuilt brakes,

Turns out my passenger front caliper was stuck in an open position. I stripped them all down and rebuilt them with fresh seals and loads of grease. Didn't bother painting them as it's a bit pointless in my opinion.

This is now fully on the road and is now my legal daily driver. I'm thrilled to bits, MOT passed without any advisories.

I do have a faint knocking noise going round roundabouts from the diff area. I'll check my oil levels and if that doesn't sort it I'll look into swapping the diff. Very happy chappy though.

Took this up to A-Line in Dudley. They're a highly recommended alignment centre and bloody hell I was impressed. If anyone local needs their car setting up seriously take it there. They will talk you through everything that they're doing.

My car seems to have lowering springs on the front but standards on the rear, so it's a bit of a weird setup. They made the best of a bad situation and got the car as good as they could. What a difference though, it's a new car.

When the HSDs are fitted I'll be taking it back for a fast road setup.

Right then, one of the problems with building up a project car is that you don't know about certain issues until the car is all back together, taxed, insured and MOT'd.
I hadn't noticed that my exhaust was blowing while the car was in my garage. Hard to believe looking at the following pictures I know, but I didn't realise. So this was the cause:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/E907BEFF-8DD7-4C10-A4CF-C3357F1C1B72-1387-0000004787DB2A87_zpsd6d37953.jpg

So I went to my garden and went looking for a new flexi. Lucky we live in a house like ours, always something useful lying about. So the new one was welded up (lots of measuring required as its a different length to the one on the Jasma mani. And now it's perfect.

I'll get the car set up at A-line again then look into some nice wheels. I'm torn between Rota Rkr or something completely different (compomotive Mo or similar).

ed-bradley
3rd June 2013, 15:15
Dem coilies.

I was tempted by some MO's or similar for mine, haven't seen any on one yet.
Ended up with some XXR's like on your last MX5.
Whats the ballpark price figure for 4 wheel alignment? Could do with having mine done at some point.

holdawayt
3rd June 2013, 15:25
Didn't realise they did xxrs like my last ones! I'd love a set of them lol. Erm the alignment is 50 quid I think, they adjust the camber, caster etc. same price on the HSD's but they'll obviously adjust rebound, ride height, castor, softness, etc.

Looking for some compomotive Th now. They look quite mean on these.

Meh I'll sell it in one piece for a mk2, it's worth more now lol. I'll give an honest review mate. I've heard different things, but my friend has a similar car with these set up properly by ALine and its great. I've got a feeling the others are lowering the car using the collars rather than the threaded base. This affecting their rebound.

We'll see!

holdawayt
10th June 2013, 08:53
Right then, I no longer want to sell the mx5 for a Mk2 Golf again. Coilovers are fitted and it's completely transformed the car. Pics below:

Got the rears done in about an hour, they went on without a hitch:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/4488C63D-5C3B-4FB0-95A8-D8A524C93AEC-2357-000000919C9D1FBA_zps99b2d748.jpg (http://s123.photobucket.com/user/Holdawayt/media/4488C63D-5C3B-4FB0-95A8-D8A524C93AEC-2357-000000919C9D1FBA_zps99b2d748.jpg.html)
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/4770E25D-28CC-4606-98D8-6D0C1A49F52D-2357-000000918CF37046_zpsa0b8332a.jpg (http://s123.photobucket.com/user/Holdawayt/media/4770E25D-28CC-4606-98D8-6D0C1A49F52D-2357-000000918CF37046_zpsa0b8332a.jpg.html)

Then I started on the fronts and hit problems, I slipped when I split the balljoint and whacked myself in the eyebrow. It bled.... a lot and I'm not that great with blood:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/913294C2-1757-45C8-B100-3DADC5DC82D4-2357-00000091AF4AA59B_zps1d7a19b9.jpg (http://s123.photobucket.com/user/Holdawayt/media/913294C2-1757-45C8-B100-3DADC5DC82D4-2357-00000091AF4AA59B_zps1d7a19b9.jpg.html)

Once that was over I got the fronts on and had a look at the height. hmmm:

http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/4327BE22-A087-4A2F-B351-60A167310182-2357-000000919648E95E_zpsabe75c62.jpg (http://s123.photobucket.com/user/Holdawayt/media/4327BE22-A087-4A2F-B351-60A167310182-2357-000000919648E95E_zpsabe75c62.jpg.html)

As expected, front was far too low and the back was far too high. So I set them to a sensible height for their bedding in period, I'll then have a mess around after 100 miles to get it sitting how I'd like it.

I'm so impressed with the coilovers it's compeltely changed my perception of the car. So for the first time in my ownership, I had somebody wash (detail) it. It's now a different car. I'm smitten!
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o317/Holdawayt/35D8F60E-0FAD-46FD-90E0-60310282A916-2357-000000917F5FFA08_zpsc64b55a5.jpg (http://s123.photobucket.com/user/Holdawayt/media/35D8F60E-0FAD-46FD-90E0-60310282A916-2357-000000917F5FFA08_zpsc64b55a5.jpg.html)

I'll do a little review on the coilovers once they're bed in. Very impressed though.

Well, there's 3 other Eunos progress threads on the NEW POSTS page so thought I'd make it 4.

I've got a full set of polybushed wishbones that I'm currently tidying up. While I do this I'll be undersealing the car and cutting the rear bumper. (I'll need to give the exhaust a polish too as everything will be on show).

I've just bought a GV front lip for it, this should give the front end a more aggressive look and I'll order a set of TSIs from Moss next week.

I'm buying an old CG125 to get to work and back on. This will free up some cash so hopefully things can start getting atheistically pleasing on this car rather than just performance related. In laymens terms - wheels and interior bits.

Right then, minimal progress and a few issues this month.

The polybushes that were fitted to the wishbones were a poor fit, I'll need to trim them down in order for them to sit flush. This doesn't bother me too much as it's a job for this winter when the car is off the road.

In the mean time I've attached my front lip:

These pics show how rarely I clean this car lol.

My front left caliper has started sticking too, this has caused lots of problems getting to work and back. I can't really afford to replace the calipers this month so instead I sold my motorcycle and bought another one that I can actually ride to work.

Plans for the winter are to:

Strip and powdercoat the new wishbones above.

New wheels

Hard top

Get the front and rear bumper and bonnet repaired and painted

Decent service.

That should see me through 2014 a happy chap. Then the following winter I'll hopefully have saved enough for some ITBs or forced induction of some description.

Yesterday was a glorious day.

Managed to get the day off with my old man to get the car running again. It all went surprisingly well with only a few minor hiccups.

We replaced the water pump pulley, harmonic damper, inner cam belt pulley, crankshaft oil seal, camshaft oil seals, cam belt, tensioners and the woodruff key.

I now have a smooth running engine with no nasty wobbles or leaks.

However, I was offered a complete TD04 turbo conversion last night at a price I would be daft to refuse. So boost is happening sooner than expected.

I'll mock the system up on my spare engine at home and see what goes where etc. I'll probably need to upgrade the clutch, diff and brakes before I can think about fitting the kit so it won't be happening any time soon. But it's progress non the less. Pics when I receive the goodies :D

The 1.6 diff and shafts won't last 10 minutes with around 200bhp worth of boost.
Even Dan was going to upgrade to 1.8 diff and shafts and as you know he had the mental clutch to go in, and he runs a lot less rear grip than you due to the neg camber.

Boost plus grip = bye bye tiny mx5 diff lol

Plans are still unchanged, however priorities have. I'd like to get some wheels and a hard top sorted for the Mazda soon, put the BMW away for winter and use the mx5. I'll inevitably decide to sell the 330 soon as it's not really my cup of tea. Goes like stink and it is really smart but I like my older stuff. I'll then have a few k to chuck at the mx5 :)

Oh and there's a bike test inbetween all of that.

What you need is a really old school 5 series. I just happen to know someone that has one. Platinum green, all the mod cons. Excellent cars!

No worse than the Mazda (Y) 24mpg average and I have a heavy right foot.

I didn't realise you still had the MX5, I thought you sold it for the BMW!

Nooo, I couldn't sell it, sold my last one before I was happy with it and knew I'd regret doing it with this.

Given the fact that the BMW is no more, and my pay out won't be that great for it. I might have to sell the mx5 when I eventually get my pay out so I can buy an S14a.

Shame for both cars but I cant be arsed pouring money into the Mx5 when I really want an S14a.

What happened to the BMW? I did see the aftermath on FB but no indication as to what actually happened.

On an island with two lanes, I was in the left lane and there was a bin lorry in the right hand lane.
I was slightly ahead of the lorry, it then decided to come across into my lane and took me out in the process. Pushed me a long the road a bit then realised someone was beeping at him.

Absolute ball ache, really didn't need the hassle at the mo. Was one of my favourite cars too.
