Just started to prepare my VTR wheels for paint...the sanding stage.
How far down do I have to sand the standard paint down to? Just remove the clear coat or all the way down to the old primer?

depends on how good a finish you want!
When I did mine, I literally keyed them lightly, 2/3 layers of primer, 2/3 layers colour, 2/3 laquer!
Finish was good but could have been a lot better if I had spent ages on them.

Just key them enough so the paint sticks. No need to go really deep into the paint unless the wheels are in pretty bad.

^^^ there a few sets I have done spent about 2 hours on each wheel tho as this will give you the final out come, so any corners cut at prep stage will result in shit looking wheels

Ahhh nice one thanks for the info guys. Spent some time last night doing them properly. 1 wheel a night :)
Got a nice even smooth key down to the old primer. The whole wheel is now grey ready for fresh primer :)

If the wheel is in good condition then a good sanding with a 180 grit is all that is needed and an 80 grit then 180 grit for chips ect I use a DA when sanding wheels where I can get and by hand or use my little DA for the bits the big one can't get at.
