Rear panels silicone.

Hello,is the silicone behind the rear panels there just to prevent water or noise coming in the car? need to re-do the joints as the old one is dry,is it just normal silicone sealant?

that looks messy! has the car had a crash?
i will take a look at the rear arch in mine tomorrow, im sure it looks different.
but yeah, its for water, nothing to do with noise.
there should have been some sound insulation in there between the card and the metal

Pic it's quite poor in quality but in person it doesn't look that bad,it's just dirty,i have removed the sound insulation anyway.
