Hey all, what's everyone's opinions on these as I had ago in one today and tbh I'd rather walk than drive one again was terrible! The ride wasn't as expected the the expectations were do high but IMO there shit!

Have one as a daily and enjoy driving it. It's not the be all and end all of motoring but what do you expect for the money.
I hear mk1 poverty spec saxo's are more highly rated though.

Lol to the poverty spec Saxo quote!
I drove the Clio 200 I believe and I did not enjoy it! The seats were uncomfortable and they just didn't seem to want to shift when I had to!

Just my opinion, but I think they are far from shit. Had my 172 for three and a half years and still like driving it.
Edit, just spotted you said the 200. We looked at a couple of 200's when trying to find a car for the wife, we/she wasn't as keen on them. The brakes are better than the 1*2 but I like the fact the 1*2 is a little/nimble car.
She ended up with a Corsa VXR instead which actually seems bigger than the 200

Must of been 10000000000x better then driving a mk1 flat arch tho....

Before the Renaultsport days, but my mk1 Clio, was quite frankly awesome seating wise.. So comfy.. My mates Megané 225 was nice aswell, with the recaro seats..
The ones with poverty spec interiors are grim for the seats, but if you pay for the better ones, they seem nice!
As for the 172/182, i think people expect epic power.. When the number isn't actually BHP.. Most 182's are usually around 160-170bhp standard

I don't doubt the 172 as a mate has one for track/road use and I loved being just a passenger in it!
Maybe it's just the newer versions?

I spotted you'd mentioned the 200 and I was editing my post as you quoted. They lost a lot of appeal (to me) when they went bigger. I like little cars.
I considered selling the 172 and getting a newer Twingo 133. I had a test drive in one and it was decent fun.

This is why Kwan they used to great cars but now I think they are dying out and loosing there touch! The 172 and 182 are great little cars an I would love to own one but I'm not sure how long they will last!

I've owned a Saxo VTR 106 GTI Saxo VTS with PH3 cams Clio Ph1 172 and got my Mini Cooper S and my 172 was the quickest car out of all of them.
Phase 1's have a wicked 1st gear run 14.2 1/4 miles in it made 180bhp on the dyno and pulled very hard, slowed a little bit once in 5th gear as they have a very long 5th gear.
Didn't handle as well as my 106 GTI or Mini Cooper S but it had very good brakes and I used to get nearly 400 miles to a tank.
Mine was very reliable and didn't burn oil, only problem I encountered (probably because of how low it was) power steering pipe rubbed and used to leak pink fluid sometimes but only leaked on very hot days which I never understood.
I'd get another one and I miss mine sooo much but they rot, if you can find a clean one then you're laughing but mine was rusting a lot. One reason I love my Mini they don't rust much and mine is 100% rot free.

Yeah I'd imagine the Clio will be the nicest on the way down.
However, we'll most likely be stripping whichever car we get and popping in some lightweight buckets, so comfort isn't all that high on our agenda :P

I had a Clio 200 and loved it at first, but after a while the ride is horrendous and it just feels very pedestrian, nowhere near as sporty as I was expecting. But had it on finance and couldn't get rid of it until the end of the 2 years so had to put up with it lol now back to the poverty spec saxo :)

I'm glad you said that because I nearly took out an Alien Green 200 with cup packs on finance and I always feel like I regret not doing it, ended up with a Cooper S instead.

Cant believe you dont like the 200. I dont really like 172/182 models (from what ive driven) but i thought the 197/200 models are awsome. There quick, gearbox felt awsome, handling gave loads of feedback and it gripped really well. Id much rather one than my 16v for just about every reason. Renaultsport offer the best hatchback available imo too in the Megane.

You did the right thing mate, I loved it for the first two months and then it was just hell. Cost a fortune each month, a fortune in petrol (averaged 27mpg driving sensibly) and the ride was just painful, literally.
Was always good fun when you put your foot down and chucked it round some bends because it did handle well. I had the full fat one with cup suspension and brembos etc, but when it came down to it, I just don't think they're worth the money they are sold for.
How do you find the cooper S? Always liked them just never had the bottle to get one.

We would strip the car, so only 2 of us would drive down in it. We'll be part of a convoy of about 9-10 cars, the other 2 lads would just grab a lift with someone.
I'm in 2 minds, either chip in for a budget ring slag 172/VTS or just take the M3 so I can do 175 mph on the autobahn lol, don't really want to risk crashing my daily driver on the ring though. Ring slag is very tempting right now.

We looked into RSR but it seems a bit pricey, especially since there are 4 of us and their prices are usually for 2 heads iirc. Works out more economical to buy ourselves a cheap car and do it ourselves. We would then possibly just return it to standard and sell it on our return for (hopefully) pretty much what we bought it for.

I have a Clio 200, Full fat with cup suspension and other goodies. It is easily the best car I have owned and I love it. I rate it more than my old FN2 type R, Zetec S and VTS.
The interior build quality isn't up to German standards, but is very nice indeed and compared to a tin can saxo its like a Bentley.
The power is awesome and so usable, the low down pull due to the VVT is what I really like. After 3k rpm mine just picks up all the way to the 7,500 rpm redline, much better IMO than my old Civic which was great after 5,500 rpm.
The handling is also very good! So easy to push on and drive fast, Clio is soo good on track and faster round Brands than my FN2. The only thing I may do is lower it a little on H&R springs just to get rid of the minimal arch gap.
I don't think you can judge all Renaultsports after a trip to the shop with your nan. They are all very good cars and definitely aren't getting worse with age. I will be keeping mine for many a year to come.

How do you find the cooper S? Always liked them just never had the bottle to get one.
I love it.
Probably the best thing I love about my Cooper S it's a performance car that loves being driven slowly if you get me. My 172 always wanted to be driven fast, you couldn't drive it smooth at 30mph (might have been the RS Tuning map that was on it) and as you built up throttle it was only fully happy when you floored it.
My Mini you can drive it anyway you like it's a lovely cruiser, put it in 6th on the motorway it will pull hard all the way from 50mph right up to 140mph where it tails off a bit, it's a little bit worse on fuel than my 172 has a 50 litre tank and I get around 330 miles to a tank in mine, Clio had a 45 litre tank and used to get about 360-370 to a tank.
It's reliable as hell never let me down, standard the 172 has better brakes think they are 283mm on a 172 whereas my Mini has something like 270mm somewhere around there.
Mini is a lot easier to drive as well I always thought in my Clio I was slumped back even if I adjusted the seat properly, in the Mini you do sit on the floor quite a bit but you sit upright on the floor with the pedals perfectly alligned infront of you, all I'd say about people who diss a Mini they've never driven one, my Mini is not as fast as my 172 and I don't think it ever will be but I sacrifice it because 1) the driving position is perfect 2) its a very very easy car to drive, the quick steering rack makes it a joy and the supercharger sound is just addictive.
Hopefully if I get money sorted I might put it on the road for FCS and take it on track for a bit of fun.

Well all the people on Mini Torque say standard Cooper S's run anywhere between 15.8-16.2 on the 1/4 mile, I went to York and ran a 15.4 lol.
They put this sheet up where you can look at what 1/4 mile your car should do and it said under R53 Mini Cooper S standard they should do 14.6, I was doing consistent 15.4's all day and couldn't get near 14.6.
Mini's are rubbish off the line, they have restricted boost in 1st gear and 1st gear isn't very good.

So you drove your aunties Clio for a bit with L plates on that you didn't like it.
First off, why do we all make a tread about a car we drove and didn't like?
Everyone has a different opinion on a car, some like and others don't.
I have a Clio 200 and its a very capable car and round a track, it's probably awesome.
The brakes are brilliant but its not as quick as people seem to believe. There are plenty of quicker cars out there, a few 2L TDI's are plenty capable of keeping up with me 40-70mph.
The handling is fantastic, you can stick it into almost any corner and it just grips. Plus with the added advantage of decent brakes, you can brake late so on country roads they are brilliant.
The interior is not the best but its better than it used to be!
If you want to drive it to its limits (i.e high RPM) then you should expect dire MPG.
I filled the tank yesterday (about 50 litres) and driving back from the petrol station through town I was getting 23mpg. Motorway you are looking at about 35-36mpg assuming you stick at 70mph which gives an combined average of about 28-29mpg which seems to be what I get most months (roughly) but that's 90% granny driving with the odd foot down into the high revs.
In hind sight, I would not have bought this if I could go back and start again with my money but you live and learn!!
I will keep the Clio another 18 months then move onto something more sensible (and probably German).

My mate had a twingo 133 when they 1st came out.. Handled like nothing iv ever known! Went round corners so fast, was nippy, and had good pull! Only let down on that was the poverty spec seats, not sure if you can spec them up for better seats or not, if you can, he was stupid not to
Nope. You can't spec recaros which is a shame. The standard seats ARE supportive enough though for track although you usually have to compromise reach in arms and legs.

Don't quote me but im sure i heard of a renaultsport specific dealership fitting some.clio 200 seats to a twingo after the customer bought the car.
Personally i like the seats in that they are comfy and very easy to wipe clean.
They do look pretty gash though the renaultsport logo in orange can't quite cover up how ugly they are lol

Think they only came on the silverstones or a huge extra on the options list.
They are good little cars but for the true GT3RS of hot hatch shenanigans its the Clio 200 all the way.

So the op thinks the Clio is shit after driving it about with L plates on and his auntie in the car! They are best when they are being thrashed!
I went from a cammed vts to full fat 182, similar in speed but power delivery is different and the Clio felt more solid and better made. Mpg was quite rubbish but drive wise it had loads of grip and great handling.

No it isnt
hard_corejoeboy
4th January 2013, 13:29
Slightly different suspension
Harnesses
Seats
Optional rollcage
Poly rear windows
Carbon bonnet
So basically 95% the same as an r26.
leeroybrown
4th January 2013, 13:57
Has a smaller washer bottle as well compared to the R26 ha.

And...
weighs 120kg's less.
And has a short shift gearstick.
Different tyres.
Less sound deadening.
Different suspension.
Different exhaust.
No rear wiper.
No headlight washers.
NO rear seats.
No passenger airbag.
No climate control.
No fog lights.
Different steering wheel.
Oh, and different badges.
Yep - practically identical...

So all stuff that anyone could do to their r26 pretty much by taking things out ofbit.
Same bodyshape, same bumpers, same spark plugs same pretty much everything apart from the stuff you mentioned.
Okay its probably not exactly 95%
If anything its actually probably 99% in terms of parts.
Oh and if you are going to be petty at least don't repeat things i've already mentioned.

Maybe im being petty but i was counting every wire and nut in the parts list lol
I only receive shit on the forums because i usually speak the truth and have people when ive called their cars or driving shit. Then it just gets taken to the extreme by some people who feel they have to disagree with everything i say.

You don't usually speak the truth though... You usually just try and justify your belief that your car is the greatest in the world and that you're one of the greatest drivers in the world whilst occasionally spouting drivel and maybe the odd occasional post that actually does make sense...

Wow hardcore I used to think why people think you're retarded but now that post confirms it.
That's a bit like saying Mini Cooper S's are just a Mini Cooper S GP with back seats, they are completely different.
Cooper S GP's fetch £12,000 regular Cooper S fetch half that.
If it was that easy to get R26R performance from the R26 F1 no one would ever bother with the R.
Yes people will buy Saxo's or 172's and strip them out and turn them into a track car but how many people are seriously going to spend £7-£9,000 on a R26 F1 and strip out all the sound deadening, fit poly carb windows, fit a roll cage etc.
The R26R will always retain it's value despite it's setup as it's a track day derived car, anyone who takes a R26 F1 to strip it out will only devalue the car.

No a Renaultsport Twingo is a completely different car to a twingo GT. An r26r is just a track version of the r26.Your missing the point here.
I wasnt saying its as good. Im just saying you can have 95% of the r26r for a lot less money.
Frankly i dont own either so i have no interest if people pay attention or not.

I wanted to test drive a Megane 250 cup not long back but fooking hell they're I possible to get hold of with the local dealerships.
One thing that did tickle me is the salesman asked me if I was looking at any other cars. So I said an Astra VXR to which he told me that they're not very good because he sees them broken down on the roads all the time. He only then asked me what car I had!
Saying that Vauxhall are as bad, when I said I was off too look at a Megane they said Renault would be bust this year so it's pointless going to try one!

As blackie mentioned, I don't see why people go from saxos to Clio's, its a marginal improvement imo, just jumping on the bandwagon.
