View Full Version : Should I break my car?

blackie_2k5
4th January 2013, 13:16
Really not sure what to do with it, do really love it but fancy a change, weighed up the options and its doing my head in

In the one hand the Saxo is really good fun, it's really cheap to run, tax, insure surprisingly, and has the fun factor of showing up a lot bigger cars

On the other hand it's old, dated, not very safe, and not a very grown up car.

All I keep thinking is, if I break it ill really regret it, and to have a car that's as fast or faster, it's gonna cost a fortune to run, tax and insure!

I have thought about running two cars again, but when you add it all up, will it end up costing the same to run as say for example, a 350+bhp evo or scoob

Head is up my arse with what to do lol

No. I wouldnt want the expense of 2 cars, 2 mots, 2 taxs, insurance, mods, repairs, fuel, tyres.

Breaking a car is more hastle than it's worth, well a standard one is! (Especially a Saxo) just keep it and enjoy it while you can :)

Why do you want to break it?

blackie_2k5

Why do you want to break it?

It still need about £300 spent on it to get it back to a standard I'd be happy to sell it, to sell it whole would mean I'd lose a fair bit on it, as no one will give me what it's worth in parts (I don't think anyways)

Similar same situation as me and I'm breaking mine.

I don't want to shell out money on a car knowing I'm not going to get any of it back when I am getting a more economical car now anyway.

Would rather take the hit on money I have already spent tbh.

Ah sound, well I don't think you should break it again mate, they are better when they are working.

Right, stopping the unfunny joke.

Why do you actually want another car, like what do you want out of it? Speed isn't everything, and other than being reasonably cheap to run and fix, but also very cheap in it's build and looks, a Saxo doesn't really have much else going for it... Obviously yours is bound to be bloody quick, but speed isn't everything.

get a little 1.5d as a runaround and keep it.

i'm 16v'ing my xsi, and i got to the point where is was just going to get rid. but after a chat with the miss's, the car is going in her name, she's insuring it, and its being used for track days only sorta thing. now that she's 25 as well wont cost much. lol

blackie_2k5

I just want something newer and more comfy etc for my daily and running two cars I don't really want to do anymore

So it would need to be a good all rounder

For me I like to go fast haha, so it would have to be fast and handle relatively well, I want something bigger and more comfy, to be as quick etc Itd need to be 300bhp minimum if its s bigger car, which means its gonna be a fortune to run, insurance is going to be more

Tax is going to double, as will fuel bills

Totally head fucking

What's your budget? I have a car in mind that will do you nicely that you've mentioned before as well. It's quick, easy to drive and comfy as fuck. Dunno about how well it handles... Although you did say it was too expensive to mod, although any big car probably will be...

In fact, what about an E36 M3?

I was thinking sacking it all off and going for the s60R haha

But I don't know if I want to fork out fro a decent 1, budget I'd say 5/6k

Which would get me one... But I'm still not sure :p

They do hadle very well too

Edit, don't like the 36.. Was looking at 46. But insurance is stupid on them

What's not to like about the 36?! Crazy boy.

To be honest, there isn't really much that fits the bill... If you weren't after 300+, there'd be so many more. I'd say Vectra VXR, but they probably handle like a sack of shit and aren't cheap to run... Looked at Audi S4's or anything like that?

Brettles1986

Let's be honest, anything close to 300bhp isn't going to be cheap to run or maintain

not a very grown up car.

I'm 29 and I have just bought a Saxo....am I doomed?

I'd say keep it, but be sure you sell me that brace.....

I broke my first Turbo Proton and regretted it (although I did manage to get a bike and go through my lessons and test using the money). That had a similar appeal to your car, not a lot to put together and was quick (the engine was dyno'd at 262bhp).

Keep it for another 6months (or until towards the end of the summer) and if you are still unsure break/sell it then as you'll at least have had a decent amount of time to decide properly and drive it in dry weather.

I voted Yes, but only because it's a saxo.

Personally I'd do what I'm doing with the mx5 and run a sensible boring thing and work on the project (Saxo) in your case when you get time and the cash.

That way I can take the timing belts etc all off and not have to worry about getting it up and running again instantly. I can just take my time and do it properly.

I just don't like them haha

Astra Vxr I like, but if going for decent car I want moooaaarr doors :p. and they're pretty heavy, even 280/300bhp isn't very quick at all, and that's about as far as you can take them before they start eating pistons and needing forged internals

This is why it's such a head fuck lol

Giraffe
4th January 2013, 13:47
But what about a Vectra VXR? At one point they were the fastest production saloon to 60 weren't they?

Buy a car with a towbar, get a trailer

Drive the car daily and sorn the saxo

Then youve got it for track days, and can switch the insurance over in 1 phone call if you fancy a road blast (on the same policy)

thought about a 5 door MK5 golf gti? i have a 3 door one running 271bhp and 300lbft plenty quick enough with loads more tuning potential and im still getting 36mpg running around town.
Really well built easy to tune handle really good and plenty space inside aswell

What's boot space like though? He has a nipper and from what I've seen of boot space, it doesn't look to be enough...

Aye, it's why I asked you about the Golf. I've been looking at the VRS cos they don't carry the premium the Golf does, but I slightly prefer the looks of the Golf, but I'm so used to a big boot, like passat/vectra/volvo sized boot, that I'm thinking I might just carry on waiting for the VRS prices to drop. We'll see... Still wanting an XJR mind, which you should definitely get Blackie!

If you want boot size then i'd take the octy over the golf. I would happily have one the price they go for is really good for what you get.

Cheers lads, I don't want it to go that's for sure, more thinking needed

The car was aimed at being track toy but being 2.5 hours from the nearest track (well decent one, Teesside autodrome is about 40 mins away but it's shit lol)

It would end up costing me about £250+ every tile I wanted to do a day :(

Simon
4th January 2013, 22:01
I voted for "run two cars"

But it does depend on what you get as your daily.

How much does the insurance drop by on the saxo for removing commuting, just having it as SDP?

Just wondering.
As a guy I work with wants to change to using his Supra as his daily (currently weekend toy).
By adding commuting and increasing mileage from 2k to 5k
The cost has gone from £250 to well over a grand.

Obviously you are doing it the other way round.
Might be worth looking into it.

Ah ok, in all honesty I was just wondering if you've just always had saxos and not really tried living with anything else day to day, hence the reluctance, or whether you really do just don't want to part with it... Granted my saxo wasn't fast, was just a lowered VTR with a zorst, but I've not really missed it. It was reliable and cheap, but I just find that in quality, the saxo really really lacks.

blackie_2k5
4th January 2013, 22:50

If it wasnt turbo'd I'd probs have moved on a long time ago, but fun factor in it is amazing, never fails to make you smile when you put your foot down

That is an awesome feeling and one I admit I do miss a lot

But tbh only you can really make the decision whether you keep it or not, if your prepared to spend even more time working on it, and spend more money on it that you probably won't make back on mapping, failing parts etc then keep it for a while longer, if not then get rid.... the two reasons above are the reasons im getting g rid, and should probably be the two deciding factors on what you do with the saxo

RobVT
4th January 2013, 23:37
People get caught up on making some money back when having a car, I could not careless in making money back on a car. ( i have my ibiza up for 2k ;) but thats average price) That shouldn't be the deciding factor on keeping the car, It all boils down to can you afford to run it? maintain it? enjoy it? if you can't? get rid man but if you can keep it! and use it to its full potential

Gabbastard
4th January 2013, 23:40
Im totally with Rob. I couldnt justify keeping my VTS, so decided to sell. Got no joy as a whole car so broke it for WAY more than Id have made selling it complete. Shame to break a car that works fine, but money is king.

blackie_2k5
4th January 2013, 23:45
Don't get me wrong, I'm not bothered about losing money, was never my intention to make it back, but fact is, I could make alot more splitting it then someone would pay to buy it outright, so that would be where I'd take it tbh
