My car is black and had the same problem.
I didnt use anything that was made specifically to remove swirls and im not a pro detailer but like you i have a machine polisher and i managed to get a good result.
I washed the car all off using two buckets, one to wash the sponge in after wiping the car.
dried it using a chamois leather.
clay barred it.
Then with the machine polisher went over it with some Tcut 'Black' that is slightly abrasive, but not as much as t-cut original. It seems to cut the really fine scratches out and fills the slightly deeper scratches with black, hiding them a fair bit.
I then left for about 10/15 minutes, then buffed it off by hand.
Then went over it again with the machine polisher with some Auto Glym Super Resin Polish. And again, buffed it off by hand.
Car looked like it had been resprayed!

you realise of course that Tcut is a brand and not a single product.
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_categoryId_2 55240_productId_167625_langId_-1?cm_mmc=Shopping-_-Google%20Product%20Search-_-Car%20Maintenance%2FCar%20Paints%20%26%20Car%20Bod y%20Repairs%2FCar%20Paint%20Restorers-_-CarPlan%20T-Cut%20Colour%20Fast%20Black%20Car%20Polish%20500ml&source=shopping
It was this i used.
I gave it a try, it worked really well!
Ive heard people say that the Tcut original stuff that comes in a red bottle is bad, but thats probably as its just a cutting compound, you have to use a detergent to get that stuff off!

Just the pads it came with I'm not a professional by any accounts just want to try get my paint work to look a lot better without spending a massive amount as I have been made redundant

When I was a car you need to first wash it with just water to get the big clumps of mud off ect then use detergent to break up the mud still on the paint and rub and wash off ( don't rub in to much or your rubbing crap into the paint work) rinse off and use car shampoo this makes it look very clean and use micro fibre cloths to clean streak free if you want even more shiny I recommend clay baring and using a good finishing polish to protect the paint sorry if its teaching to suck eggs that what I do for a very clean shiny ride
