Hi guys I just bought a vtr off my sis for £250 but it needs a new axel, I have already priced a recon one for £280 with 2 years warranty, I am also wanting to refresh the whole underneath of the car up "no knocking or banging" so I was wondering what to buy, basically I want I nice fresh rolling chassis then I will start on revamping the engine.
Thanks in advance

I'm willing to spend around 1k on the whole car, ideally I want a nice ride not to harsh over the bumps, I'm just after a bit advice on stuff to renew e.g drive shaft, wheel bearings, wish bones, etc cheers for the speedy response.

Use photo bucked and copy and paste the img code :)

You can get updated bushes, and you can get whole car kits, could be worth looking into

Cheers mate, will look into it, I'm gunna start with the back axel, then move on to the wish bones, then drive shaft... Quick question, is there any performance drive shafts if so you got any suggestions? Also I want new gear links as my gear stick feels really loose and shitty... Saying that I am driving an 11 plate polo lol
Cheers guys

No need for 'performance' shafts tbf on a VTR, and unless they're fucked, don't worry.

Gear stick will either be the linkages, or the selector pin iirc, there are guides on here in the relevant section.

Other than that, just get some bushes and drop links etc..

Also, use the [IMG] tag for pictures.

top mounts, drop links, ball joints and bushes are usually parts which cause banging/knocking so if these were replaced with a new axel the car should drive alright

wheel bearing wise you will hear a humming/vibrating noise, to check, jack the car up and move the wheel see if there is any movement (im guessing the car failed its mot on the rear axel? if so then the wheel bearings would have been checked so should be fine if they werent bought to attention)

drive shafts, they will usually knock when going around corners if they need replacing or if the boots have split

make sure the brakes have good fluid and bled properly and all pads have enough meat on them and check discs for grooves or a lip

and then lastly give the engine a good service, all fluids, filters, plugs, belts etc then you should have a good base to work from

as mentioend if you wanted to 'upgrade' the car you cant go wrong with an apex lowering kit (springs and dampers), and new (harder) bushes, along with a 266mm or 283 mm (available off pug 206's, 306's plus various others) brake upgrade and some decent tires (uniroyal rainsport 2's very good) then the car will feel a thousand times better

i have a set of pug1off gearlinkages, that makes the gear change feel more precise they are various bushes and pins that wear out and make it feel sloppy all very common things to replace

Wow mate that's just the answer I was looking for! Nah it didn't fail on its mot it just the car feels like it struggles to take off from a stand still sometimes but it's not the clutch :/ are the brake discs a direct fit or will the calliper need replacing if so will this unbalance the braked from front to back? For example more harsh on the front then the back? Where can I get the linkages from? That would be one of the first things I think as it's rarther sloppy! Lol cheers alot for the detailed answer mate
LEDGEND!!

lol no worries mate

yea you use the calipers and discs, most people go for 266mm brakes off the 206 gti and some berlingos iirc as they are lighter than the 283's and the 283's arent really that much better, however i have the 283's (off the 306 gti-6, or 206 gti 180), and on some types of caliper a bit needs to be ground off as it catches the saxo strut mine were already ground back when i bought mine so im not sure where to do it but it would be pretty obvious when you line them up

its a very common upgrade the brake balemce is fine, the next best thing you can fit are the 4 pot brembos off the 406 v6 these bolt straight on, but you need to use the 206 gti 180/306 gti-6 discs as the 300mm 406 discs wont fit, but these develop a horrible squeeling after a while as the offset of the discs are wrong, some people say use xantia v6 discs but people say these still squeel

you can get linkages from teh following places

pug1off are the cheapest
