Don't know if anyone will know about this but just thought I'd throw it out there...

I've got a 20" BMX and I wanted to get coaster brakes on the rear wheel...was just wondering if its a straight swap for a coaster brake wheel or if I just buy a hub kit is it a build and swap?

Either or.

A wheel already built with a coaster brake hub or a coaster brake hub and build your own wheel.

why do you want a coaster brake?

It's old tech, like before BMX bandits tech.

I build my own its cheaper a and you can lace them up how you like. Any local bike shop will true it up for you for around a tenner.

I used to have a Raleigh Burner when I was growing up and that had a coaster brake and I loved it...I found it easier IMO. I just like em basically lol

Yeah I was thinking about doing it myself but if a bike shop could do it what would be easier haha

Bike shop charge a fortune to lace the wheel it just takes a long time. It's not hard to lace one. The hard part is balancing and truing.

Hmmm I'm sure I could do that and I quite a bit of spare time outside of work so yeah I might give it a go

Also I was possibly thinking of getting some skyway tuff wheels so I wouldn't need to lace one surely?

I would imagine it is hard to get ahold of a coaster brake nowadays.

There is no need for them in modern day BMXing.

Freecoasters yes, coaster brakes no.

No but you would need to get the correct size hub to press in.

Why skyway tuff's you pay out of your arse for a heavy dull feeling wheel that looks shit. Also you are looking at way over £150 for a genuine one.

Also just because of what I had as a kid lol. Again only a suggestion, but in all fairness just any wheel will do...especially seeing as they are ridiculously overpriced haha

Coaster brakes fuck up very easy, especially decrepit old school ones. You can make a really hardcore one out of a free coaster wheel with the tiniest bit modification and welding, which will allow you to stamp on the brakes from any speed (and probably nail yourself).

Building a bmx wheel is fun, very therapeutic I find. Was my favourite job to do on bikes, built them for most people I rode with in the past and at the bike shop I worked at for a few years. Building up £500+ DH wheels isnt as fun as everything is anodised waiting to be scratched and the tolerances are a lot closer for fitting as the parts are super precise.

If a BMX wheel wasn't dished straight you could just put it on the floor and stand on it to even it out lol.

He never has mate he likes to con people.

I had a word with my mate who works at Woodrup cycles in Leeds (Google them) He seems to think you can buy skyway tuff's with coaster brakes already fitted direct from skyway.

He also said to stay away from the replicas on ebay. And if you do want some tuff's Winstanleys bmx have them on offer at the mo and no one will beat them on price as they are selling at cost.

Yeah I had a go at building a wheel today snd it is quite thereputic until you cut yourself on a spoke...swear, then stick your old wheel back on lol

Care to share how? linky?

Also, from what I've read, don't coaster brakes burn out really easily/fast when going downhill? Might not be such an issue on a bmx where the bike is lighter and braking is only done in short bursts. I wouldn't trust them on long down hills though.
