Please don't hate me

Needed a cheap car and this came up:

http://www.caranddriving.com/images/used/large/chevkalossport%202005.jpg

Paid £1925 for it.

The car is immaculate.

06 Plate (so car in pic is not my actual car but is the same colour)
59,000 Miles
Full service history

Has full leather, Aircon, Cup holders etc.

Old Japanese technology therefore seemes worth the punt and other than the fact that it is slow as shit I really like it.

Plans:

40mm Lowering kit
Upgrade lighting to LED and brighter headlight (Osram nightbreakers)
Wheels to go anthracite (Possibly)
Clear side repeater lenses
Upgrade standard speakers

Cue abuse!

Tis indeed, the plan is to keep it (fingers crossed) until my loan finishes which will then allow me to look for something better.

I have to be honest though, it surprised me on its features for such a low end motor.

You say you needed a cheap car but paid near on 2 grand, thats not a cheap car haha

Cheap in terms of running and maintenance costs I mean (the fact that it is a hell of a lot younger than any of my previous cars leads me to believe it will be more reliable *fingers crossed*), £2000 isn't exactly bank breaking but neither is it a feeble amount.

thats a very good point lol
for a cheap motor id get a £500 106 diesel tbh! for which you would have already saved £1500 on the price of the car

They are reliable but they hold their value well, i.e a MK4 Golf TDI in good condition on around 100K will still cost in the region of £2K

I agree that my street rep has taken a hit, having said that I drive it to work and back only, any other time I walk as everything is close by.

Only time will tell if it has actually been a reliable car.

There's no banter to be had mate, I'm just disappointed. Hopefully it will do what you want it to, that's all there is really to be said. Not what I'd have chosen, but each to their own.

I put it down to getting old and boring around 40 years early!

Haven't you got a job to do?

What wheels ect go on these?

Not a clue right now, it didn't even enter my mind at time of purchase as it has the wheels in the picture already.

In an ideal world I would have it dumped on coilies with some BBS RS's and a touch of negative camber.

On a side note I just bought some of this for it:

To address the Chevrolet comment also, Chevrolet is a rebranded Daewoo for the British market, with Daewoo being Japanese and Japanese cars being reliable, i'm hoping this proves to be a wise purchase.

Oh god, did they really come with the 800cc engine? Haha.

The Matiz is cool enough... Our Dad bought one for some reason, used to potter to the shops and back in it. I had the misfortune of having to drive it to college when my car broke down.

Still remember slip streaming one of those big industrial drain cleaner lorries on an approach to a dual carriage way... As soon as the roads split, I went for it, 40mph, foot flat to the floor then BOOM, side winds. Safe to say I had to pull back in behind said lorry. Felt like killing myself.

Well good luck modifying it in anyway as parts aren't easiest to come by. My work used to be a Chevrolet dealer and I've worked and still work on these I hate them they are shockingly bad on fuel.

So plasticky inside its horrible I don't know why you bought it tbh plenty other cheaper reliable cars out there.

Depreciation is unreal on these aswell expect to get nowhere near your money back on it aswell.

Have you hit the redline in any gear yet? Be prepared if you do.

Each to there own though good luck with it. As for wheels it has same stud pattern as vauxhall just different offsets

If I'm honest I don't think it needs much other than lowering a tad more than it already is, as stated I dont plan on doing anything remotely major to it.

I agree with the dash and as for redlining it, I'm too old for that shit now, it's a commuter not a racer and I bought it with my eyes wide open to that fact.

I beg to differ when adding other responsibilities, I want a house I actually own at some point before I hit 30 or at least a tidy sum in the bank.

My daughter is not going to be any cheaper as she grows older therefore a car that is cheap to run is becoming more and more essential.

Cwmbran and Aberdare are like 45 miles apart mate.

I won't be attending any unless I get myself a cheap project tbh, not many people turn up anyway so you are best off joining someone over the bridge.

False economy, I buy a cheap saxo for say £1000, not going to find that low a mileage one for starters which inevitably will need more than just maintenance work done to it over the period of 3 years.

Unless of course I buy something like a 306HDI which again are rare as shit to find a decent one (well that is within a reasonable travelling distance from where I live)

Not really. my cheap Saxo has been reliable for 13 months.

been low milages on here for less then 1k Bret. Black one on here with 30k iirc. you're just poor at searching ;)

I'd have bought a decent passat for around the 1k mark and just left it at that.

My old one needed 1 shock in all it's life with me, which I can't remember the cost, but it wasn't a lot. I got it on 179k I think, gave it to my brother on 200k and it was running strong, right up until someone rear ended it, upon which it suffered next to no damage, but was written off due to it's age etc. He got £550 for it off the insurance, as well as the £250 off the person he sold it to when it was Cat C.

Cost me £700, and I got 50+ mpg out of it without fail. It was in a state like, bit of a shed in looks, but reliable. Only the boot lock worked, so had to open/lock from there, the boot was fiddly, but it was solid. Hell, I even knocked part of a low wall down reversing, no damage to the car!

Each to their own though, as I've said.

Except for anything other than 0 - 60 and maybe the "handling" for when you feel like driving like a tit, it's a shit car, no doubt. They drive shit, they're small, they're noisy, badly built, badly equipped and definitely not a car I'd be putting a child in. Not to mention that low mileage means pretty much fuck all, even more so when you're talking about Saxos...

Yeah but why does the mileage matter anyway?
I nearly bought a mint Wicked red VTS off here, was 96k but if anything needs replacing it's cheap to fix.

On my 1.0 I replaced both bottom arms that were £80 changed the gearbox that cost me £40 did brakes and other stuff.

Most people who stick with french cars as cheap run abouts is usually because they're handy with the spanner and know the parts are cheap, my 106 diesel only cost me £200, I've replaced a few things and parts are cheap and easy to replace, the only thing you got to make sure is to buy a rust free one because then you're really pissing into the wind.

I'd rather buy a higher mileage Saxo/106 than a reasonable mileage korean thing because the issues are unknown and parts could be expensive.

Also I see that my 106 over time pays for itself so anything I replace doesn't end up costing me anything.

I know milage means "fuck all" mines on 81k. Just saying in reply to him about milage.

Its not a car i'd put a child in but people do because its all they can afford. I cant imagine that Kalos will be much better then a Saxo in a crash.

I picked up my Saxo diesel last month for £350, 86k miles, t+t, same owner 12 years. I've done a good 3,000 miles so far and it hasn't missed a beat!
Will do me a full week to work and back on about £10-15 of diesel. That's cheap motoring.

You just got to find the right one, and make sure you check it thoroughly. Not saying you would want a Saxo D for 3 years, or to carry a child in - but as someone else has said you could get a Passat for half what you paid for the Chev, or even an A4 or mk3 Golf tdi. All of which I can imagine are much, much more reliable cars.

I'd probably be inclined to agree with this point.

Like I say though, if it had been me in his situation, I'd have taken Gandi's route of bangernomics. It's pretty much what I've done since I passed my test, and it's always worked. Worst car I ever bought was a Vectra for £2.4k. Utter shit. Next most expensive car was the Saxo for £1.3k, other than that, most I've spent is £800, and those cars were definitely the best ones I've bought, being the BMW, a Rover 25, Passat and the Volvo.

Brettles1986

I'm bored of justifying my choice of purchasing such a car tbh I have already re-iterated multiple times that it is cheap to run and as far as I can see ... reliable. You are all overlooking the fact that to insure this it has cost me £450 which is likely to be a saving on a furio (in fact a £400 saving on my old vts) or similar due to them being constantly written off.

The bangeromics theory is fine until you look at doing it potentially over 3 years, even if you go through just 2 cars in that time costing £800 each then straight away that is £1600 and I paid £1900 for a car that could potentially last longer.

As for them not being any better safety wise than a saxo, this has airbags on both drivers and passenger side aswell as in the seats and has a higher NCAP rating than a Saxo.

OK, maybe it does with a Kalos.

AP do 50mm lowering springs for the front but they come in at over £100. The rears are 30mm though.

There's a couple of kits on here. 40/40 50/30 and 30/30. All about the £120 mark.

black brett..they wear their mods far better than any colour bar white

red fades as said, silver suits very few cars...but silver will be a chunk cheaper then any other

Also Brett, you won't get white unless it's an import or someone has resprayed it.

You going for pre facelift or facelift?

What's the difference in the two?

rey

Depending on how you look at it, either a lot or nothing..

Differences, nicked straight from CTRO:

The facelift model was introduced in 2004. There are roughly 1500 changes, however the main ones are:

Lighter flywheel.
Additional sound deadening.
Different front and rear light clusters.
Different front bumper and grille, and the red H badge is larger.
Red door inserts and red inserts on the seats.

I would go for Either Red or Black. Probs Black as it looks epic when polished up.

I'd dodge Silver as when panels fade, you're chasing it and its never ending as im having that now.

You really do know fuck all about paint. The reason you are having trouble with your paint because you have a French car that used any old shite they had left to paint the car. The difference is if you ring honda up with a chassis number they will give you the exact colour code and shade of the car. Also black and the red fade more on the ctr than the satin silver.

Based on that I'm not really worries wether facelift or not, they all look smart or can be made to do so.

Facelift or nothing - front bumper etc is so much nicer. Still looks good where the pre-facelift looks dated.

I agree that the facelift looks a bit better but I would not overlook a pre-facelift if it was the right price and well looked after. After all I can just buy a facelift bumper if I feel it it needed.

It's not just the lights that are different Brett..

If you're staying pre-face then look for a 30th Anni, but personally, I'd only ever go facelift. Another premier for me, would be spot on.

Lighter flywheel, different steering rack, suspension changes etc..

I'll keep an eye out then in that case. Need to read up them a little more tbh but it's looking odds on for me to get one very soon.

Not sure I will get a premier for the money I am spending on one tbh.

What you looking to spend all in do you think?

Tbf, mileage isn't much of an issue for a K20.. Just make sure there's no rattles from the chain, it's not chewing through oil etc.

Get yourself on CTRO (http://civictype-r.co.uk/forum), not a bad place to start for info.

It's modded (some of it tacky!) and has no service history. I personally wouldn't be spending 4k on that. Why don't you get a tidy completely standard example?

I know it's been modded but by the sounds of the advert it has been done with quality parts.

The lack of service history is a bit of a worry but then if reciepts are there to prove it's been well looked after then surely nothing to worry about.

I have no hang ups about buying a standard car btw.

Are they all chain driven?

I am skeptical about mileage tbh even though I know it doesn't really matter if serviced correctly. Would you buy one on around 110,000?

Yeah they're all chain driven dude.

I'd agree, that looks to be priced pretty high for what it is. The engines seem really strong, I wouldn't be concerned about buying one at 110k.

The parts on that seem a bit meh tbh, Spoon replica system, lots of carbon wrap and led's / red bolts / painted bits, EBC brakes are a bit wang, so basically it's got coilovers, a tegiwa intake and camber arms / control arm.

If you had a haggle you could probably get this 54 plate facelift for the same price, 82k, FSH, gash exhaust granted, but it's had OEM brakes replaced of late.

Yeah that is a lovely example. I keep forgetting to search for over £4K for haggling adjustments.
