HID kits, worth it?

Been thinking about HID lights for the car.

Some bright white ones, not blue.

Are they any better than standard lights? Any info on them would be great.

They are better, 90% of people on here will slate you or having them in considering them.

Tbh I don't find them any worse than some of the BMWs and audis that have xenons.

It's because the lights don't control the beam on a saxo. On other cars they have projector lights which stops the glare from them

No they arnt the same. You dont see other cars running 100000000k HIDs that are poorly adjusted, shine blue and literally blind you. Newer cars i dont have a problem with. Its when you get old hatchbacks thinking theyre epic with 10000000000000k HIDs. OEM bulbs are fine imo.

I wasn't considering for looks. My intentions seem to have been misread.

I just wanted info on the practicality of them. Not how "epic" people think they are that have them.

I do a lot of country road driving where there is no street lights, in the dark.

Osram nightbreakers I think they're called.

Never used them but supposed to e good.

Ill be getting HIDs soon anyways probably haha don't really care what others think, if I start getting problems i would take them out.

After market HID units in a standard headlight are awful because they are usually designed to be used on a projector headlight which evenly (and safely) distributes the light.

For the sake of peoples' retinas, please don't do it. Just get brighter bulbs.

Don't be a twat. People don't give two shits if it's illegal. Have a think about how many people have a decat.

The problem is that they are VERY rarely well adjusted because they aren't well suited to a normal headlight unit. It's not that it's illegal, it's that they fucking blind people.

had hids in the saxo for years. Aslong as you adjust them properly so they arent blinding everyone

People going on about them blinding people - that was very early on when they were first introduced - the new ones are shielded and have a decent cut off.

It's like coming into work one day a bit worse for wear after a night out and from that point on labeled as the office piss head.

I used to have 6k's in my standard 106 units as I thought they looked pretty cool and took them out for MOT time - never put them back in because I saw sense lol. I'm going for a more OEM look now anyway so they wouldn't fit in either way.

Visibility-wise they were VERY good - I'll give them that... I could drive around unlit B roads at 2 in the morning with just the dipped beams on and be fine. Jumping back into the car with standard bulbs was a shock to say the least haha.

I'm tempted to try the OSRAM nightbreakers for sure - as long as they keep the standard look I'm happy :y:

Yeah you do mate - the washer jets, self levelling adjusters and the correct beam pattern IIRC... too much faffing around if you ask me.

Personally I think HID's are 10x better then standard, had them on my zaf gsi and they was a vast improvement. Just bought a set of 8k for the saxo, just personal preference.

I have a set in the saxo and compared to standard bulbs they are loads brighter and not too much glare, had them set up on the light machine thing in a garage :D no one has flashed at me and they dont blind anyone as car is pretty low anyway

If there illegal, why are they TUV rated and have the E stamp classing them legal for road use?! Well, the kits I've bought in the past have any way.

Point is most new cars have an xexon or hid system in use so its hard to make it illegal! Only the rating can be made illegal.

As for making modifications illegal in the future....they won't! Government will lose too much revenue in taxes from the mods industry.

Anyone can make a product then put the E mark along with the TUV rated mark its called marketing.A company isn`t going to sell something & advertise it as illegal now is it?:panic::panic:

Wow there is alot of hate for HIDs lol Yes they are much brighter than standard lights but I do constantly get blinded by them which drives me mad. There not for me but if you think you'll be happier driving down country roads with them then try them out! Its your choice!

I had them on my Corsa, the difference is mental, and now my Saxo has halogen bulbs i find myself checking my lights are on/working... People on here slate them but providing you have H4-R's (has a light reflector thingy on them) and theyre correctly aligned they are no more blinding then the brighter Halogens from Halfords.. but if theyre incorrectly aligned etc then prepare to join Stevie Wonder...

There's hate because they are illegal to retro-fit to a saxo pretty much full stop. The Osrams are a damn good bulb and are completely legal - but aren't as "cool y0" so wont get you the scene points. :(

Got 6k and had them on for a while now and havent been flashed once and cops have pulled me with them on and when they checked car over they didn't say one word :)

I've also had 6k in in for the last few years with no problems. It's when idiots put them into normal headlights when they're blinding. I fitted mine to angel eye headlights which have the projector in them. You really will appreciate them going down unlit country roads.

Even the angle eye projectors i have seen look rather poor. There not actually intended for HIDs. I have seen a few people on other forums take proper HID projectors from other production road cars and graft them in place. They worked rather well and assuming your only using HIDs for your Hi beam then your still not braking any laws regarding parts E approval or auto leveling. As bulbs and lens parts are E approved and auto leveling is only required for Lo beam. But still not really legal as your vehicle is not type approved for them and as such you default back to the old British standards that do not allow HIDs on the road at all. So personally I would recommend just good quality Halogen bulbs. But saying this you should not have any problem with stock halogen bulbs as there way better then the old tungsten bulbs like in the old mini and most can drive them at stock road speeds with no problems. Most modern laws are to stop to much not to little light. As the worry these days are accidents from people being unable to see because of other vehicles lights.

I find angel eyes terrible on dark country roads I have to go half the speed limit because they don't shine far enough and drivers get impatient...Main beam is great but cant use it all the time cause of other drivers.
I'm generally considering HID's in my angels cause of this.
