View Full Version : All red rear lights; legal or illegal?

Call me picky if you want, but I hated the pinkish top half section of the rear lights (indicator & reverse) so got some of that E-Tech red lens tinting spray stuff and sprayed them! They look a lot better IMO, BUT, due to the lens being red the indicator and reverse lights are red-ish, call me a c**t if you want but I just want to know the bottom line, legal or illegal?

as long as the light gets through in the right colour then there shouldnt be any problem hope this helps but if you want a 100% correct answer ask a garage that does mot or a traffic police lol

be fine if they have the reflector bit and the night lighs are visible to full effect and the indicators too.

You dont need reverse lights.

Cheers for the reply! The light still gets through, but the reverse is just red and the indicators are like an orangey-red, i'll take it into college my tutors should know as its a mechanics college :)

Legally any sort of none e marked film or tint can be considered illegal. Under UK law a vehicle the age of the Saxo must comply with BS or ECE standard. Car lights are like car tyres in this manner. There some of the few parts that have to maintain compliance even after the vehicle is registered. Many other parts you can change or alter but not lights. The only thing you can do with lights is replace them with other approved parts or if your getting really picky alter parts that do not infringe on the lights approval. For example say a mountain bracket thread was stripped you could drill it out and coil it.

But lets face it, who actually adheres to all this lol especially on a saxo.

Thanks for that :) I suppose I'll just run the car until I get stopped and told to sort it out, only needs nail varnish remover so it's not like I need to change the lights

Well you can still see orange through it but very very little, mostly red

Indicators are going to be your biggest issue. If they flash red that could indicate to vehicles following that you are pumping the brakes and you have one bulb out.

get some sort of super orange lights for the indicators or undo what you've done, you'll just feel the broad finger of the law in your sphinct0r is you don't

Cheers for the reply! Yeah i thought about that but if the actual lens is only letting through red then wont it just make it a brighter red? Thus being more noticeable?

No - reverse light isn't required for MOT/law.

And if you're reversing, that's what a fog light is for. :) oh yeah - and for when it's foggy.

Real men can afford two light bulbs and maintain their car properly instead of pushing the boundaries of what's legal and what isn't ;)

Rich men can afford two light bulbs and maintain their car properly instead of pushing the boundaries of what's legal and what isn't ;)

No boundaries are being pushed though? You don't legally need a reversing light.

Sprayed light clusters are. And when this car gets fitted with HIDs at the front (see other thread), it should be a real stunner. Should fly through the MOT too. Then when you see this:

My 106 is on nearly 116500 without one timing belt change :/

You know that guy is all about priorities when it comes to service the car.

Cheers lads! So am i okay as long as the orange is visible?

Manu

spray tinting is an MOT fail. Answer's no.

Or buy yellow bulbs and they should come out as orange.

Excellent stalking Manu :)

I retract all previous smart arse comments - Manu is correct.

Fail.

Well i'll just have to address the problems when they arrive, and about the servicing... The car hasn't been mine for the whole of it's life thus meaning if the previous owners haven't had a timing belt change why would that be my fault? I have bought the timing belt ready to be changed anyway :)

Manu

Thank you Ross, and you still owe me a mars bar.

Given that the car isn't on the road yet why is the timing belt something important on a car that isn't moving out of the garage yet?

Manu
25th January 2013, 10:22
Lol, why is a timing belt important especially after never being changed for a whole 120 Kmiles? Someone tell him please.

Read it properly, the car is not moving out of the garage for a while, but the timing belt will be changed before it moves

Yes but if you get your belt done and serviced once your sorted and its meant to be on the road you won't have the hassle of doing it or delaying your entry onto the roads and you can enjoy cruising in it
