When putting new springs on does it matter which way around the spring goes?
The coils are together at one end.
The garage that put them on, one is the opposite to the other (one side coils closer at the top the other side closer at the bottom) :/

They go on one way mate, theres a small notch at the bottom of the strut where the spring sits, this mates up with the bottom end of the spring and holds in in place. By sounds of it garage has put it on wrong, best bet is to take it back to them and explain its on wrong way, but pictures would be helpful to actually tell, usually small coiled end goes topside.

Small notch can be seen on the right suspension arm to the right of the bottom plate if you get me.

You have a picture of the bottom part where the notch is? If the spring end doesn't mate up with this then it needs to go back, the springs on wrong way round buddy.

That doesn't look right to me mate, i'd have thought it should have been other way round looking at it, here ya go, found this off the net showing it a bit better, note where spring is sat on right.

Would I notice anything while driving around?

Shouldn't imagine so, would probably get a slight knocking as spring bounces round, that notch is there to stop that from happening, best bet would be to pop to a second garage for another opinion on it, if they say its not right take it back and have them sort it
