Jap models generally have more power and toys. I think the Sti was only available in Japan on the older models so if you want a big power scooby it'll probably have to be one thats been imported. Not sure what you will be able to get for £4K though.

The Uk models usually have a better history or at least one you can trace back to dealers but in saying that there are many well looked after jap imports so just make sure everything checks out.
The jap ones are usually faster and have lots of goodies like adjustable diff's etc but Insurance is usually higher for an Import.
The jap ones are usually cheaper to buy than the UK versions aswell.
If buying privately I'd play it safe and go with a UK model.
Register with Scoobynet they'll point you in the right direction and they always have some mint Impreza's for sale.

jap has more power and gismos but some parts can be hard to find plus there will be a limiter on it 110 i think and the spedo will be in km, but companies can change this, but it will be in better condition than a uk 1 as the japs look after their cars, but when putting fuel in the japs is 101octane rating and ares is a shite 97 so it may be that u have to use optimax in it, id go jap personaly

Just had a quick look through pistonheads.com and there are actually a fair few Scoobies going for around the £4K mark.

Unless your getting one fresh off a boat the majority will have the speedo's converted, foglights and be undersealed the UK ones are run on optimax aswell.

make shore you look propaly at one as the one that i got a month ago i just sold as it needed loads of work doing to it. the uk impreza will be cheaper to insure the wrx will be next then the sti will kill you on insurance. just make shore you dont let your heart rool your head. for around £4000 you will probably get a p - r reg uk car and around a k-L on an import.

its not worth hpi ing a car that will be that old. You will be beter off paying for a full inspection by a mechanic.

I have 2 friends that Have Scoobs
1 is imported the other is UK
Apparently the import runs rough on UK fuel, as in Japan their fuel is of much higher octane?

I got a UK spec, not much difference, the UK 2000 Turbo is 220bhp standard and the import WRX is 245bhp, but if i was you i would go for a UK spec as it is easier to get work done and get parts !
Also it is very easy to get it to WRX standard, mine is as quick as some STI's now ;)
UK all the way, and you can get some very good deals for £4000 now !
