Alright lads, hoping to use this thread to get some ideas for a new motor..

And throw a load of quotes at insurance companies and see what I can insure, I'm 19 now with 2 years NCB so hopefully not going to get too bent over.

I travel 110 miles a day to work so ideally I would love something capable of 30MPG.

I'm not sure about diesels.. can they be fun? Driven a 1.9 astra tdi and didn't excite me, I'm worried I'd miss petrol.

The one thing I think I'm set on is a renaultsport megane, but I can't fully commit incase I'm missing some other decent cars..

Don't want to spend more than about £4.5k and really don't want to spend more than a grand on insurance... so, what you got lads.

:y:

Cheers

I'm 24 with 4 years no claims, live in a town where dropping litter is a pretty serious crime, and i can't insure one under a grand lol!

Realisticly, he isn't going to insure any sort of fun car for under a grand, not power wise anyway..

Probably best looking at 1.9 CDTi Astras, or the likes..

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2006-56-VAUXHALL-ASTRA-1-9-SRI-PLUS-CDTI-8V-3D-120-BHP-/121065837791?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item1c301614df

50+mpg, 120bhp, mapable to 150-160 easily, 6 gears for motorway cruising, and pretty cheap to fix..

Bloody hell - 110 miles a day?! That's some serious mileage!

I'd go for something along the lines of a boggo Octavia derv personally - those fuckers are nigh on bullet proof as far as I know. I used to work in my local Co-op and a taxi driver used to come in a fair bit. One time I asked him how many miles he'd done with it... 320k was the response and that was only with a couple of clutches and a recon 'box IIRC. For the mileage, that's mad.

Think he took it up to ~350k when he had to change it as it was over 10 years old but it would have gone on without breaking a sweat tbh.

Can't get fuel/mileage allowance for normal commuting unless he gets taxed on it as a benefit anyway.

iVTR
8th March 2013, 18:04
Oh dear lol, you're just opening yourself up to be bent over paying monthly!

Seriously happy with those quotes, just insured the trophy F1 edition aswell for £1350 which still is a fucking lot of money but it's more reasonable than I thought.

Thanks for the suggestions people I'll go insure some of those cars.. and some diesels to see if it's any cheaper.

Cheers

who the fuck pays insurance monthly? complete mugs game.

if you "can't" afford it or are too simple to save then get a credit card with 0% on it and use that.

Haha yeah mate to be honest thats my main worry.

I've worked out its going to roughly cost twice what my VTR costs on petrol.

...Fuck.

Apparently you can drive them without the turbos working meaning you can see over 30MPG, but what's the point in that.

Sometimes in that 110 miles theres fuckloads of traffic aswell and I wouldn't want to put a megane through it :n:

Meh.

Fuck paying £600 excess. You're putting down £350 correct me if I'm wrong but don't most insurers add a young drivers excess of £250 on top if you're under 21?

Edit: it's not, £100 compulsory is for over 25's...

Just noticed that, I'm putting £250 voluntary in that box which I didn't even notice... I'll change that to £0 straight away, and thats £350 excess as it is now, 250 + 100 compulsory,

I bloody hope not but probably do. They are all robbing bastards at the end of the day. :(

I rented a previous version with that eco derv engine on it, and was co-driving it with a mate. It's not sporty to say the least but the MPG figure is more or less that if you drive out of town.

commuting 110 miles a day
not bending over backwards while running and insuring an RS.

Pick one. Also: whenever something breaks, you wouldn't believe the time it takes for renault to send the parts. And how much it is. I'd recommend this

Or a derv, you'll thank me in the long run.

Clio 172? Mixed driving, my digital thing says 34.6, so at 110 miles a day that would increase to a good 37/38mph atleast, so not bad at all. Fairly quick and insurance should be cheaper than a megane.

Still be a fair amount of budget left aswell.
