View Full Version : Worst visibility you have driven in

Today I experienced possibly some of the worst driving conditions I have ever driven in. Visibility was down to about 2 or 3 metres for 3 or 4 miles.
It was blowing a blizzard of very fine snow ' but combined with the horizontal drifting snow you could see fuck all. Outside temp was showing -4 deg c
The cars in front and behind both with full fogs on just disappeared from view instantly and they were only a couple of car lengths away earlier.
It's now hammering down outside with snow again... The weather just gets more unpredictable by the day
What the worst condition you have encountered ?

A few feet, over the hills between dorset and Devon. Thick fog. Luckily I know the road very well.

3-4 feet I'm not even lying, i wish i was.
Was about 8:30 on the m62 around june last year, thick white fog just descended in about a minute, reminded me of the film "the fog" haha.

Visibility.. The end of the bonnet
On the a66 in an extreme blizzard on a really foggy day, I'm sure you're aware of how bad it gets up there when someone isn't quick enough closing the snow gates lol

approx 1986 we were renovating a property in the evenings after work. We travelled 20 miles each way to it. One evening there were 3 of us in the car with loaded trailer. The fog came down so thick you couln't see the kerb. Two of us got out and walked along the sides of the road for the driver to follow us so he could see where to go...seemed like we walked miles before we could see clearly enough to drive again

Probably a few months after I'd passed my driving test when I'd go out for drives just because it had been a long time coming to get my license in my Mum's old Mk2 Ibiza.
I remember it was pretty cold and wet at my place so was taking it easy, but got up to West Kingsdown (literally on the road outside Brands Hatch) and the fog was thicker than an X-Factor contestant. Had to crawl along the road at now more than 30mph only just able to see the white lines and the curb - it was pretty worrying tbh.
There was another time when I was taking a mate home round the backroads (again in my Mum's car as I was still looking for the Quikky) and it was absolutely hammering it down with fog lingering in the trees. Again, no more than 30mph on a national speed limit road :S
Actually had to tell my mate to turn the music off as I didn't particularly want to bin the car, especially with her in it lol. Was pretty eery just driving in complete silence haha.

That's the exact place it was right on the top. Once we got out of the whiteout we come across some tv news crews with satellite trucks and cameras

New Year's Eve (or xmas eve) quite a few years back, pitch black and heavy snow coming back from Nottingham down one of the A Roads literally couldn't see any further than my bonnet.

Yeah end of the bonnet for me.
I drove from my house to Antalya in Turkey when I was 18 and some of the conditions (along with shit roads) made it impossible to drive in. Bulgaria was the worst with sideways rain/monsoon going on yet the locals still drove everywhere at 80 lol

Worst weather I've ever driven in has been up there about 7/8 times
Its crazy to think that just 30 mins from my house you can get weather that bad on a day to day basis lol

Mine was worst ever on the way home tonight also. Driving back from Tunbridge Wells to Rochester. A dual carriageway of just black ice, cars crawling along at like 4mph, spinning all over the place.
Then the M2 and A2 were thick snow, again, crawling pace, could barely see in front of me.
The knobheads don't help the situation, had a bloke in a corsa almost wipe me out because he was trying to use the fast lane.
Had a van spin in front of me on the motorway, pic on fb lol.
Plenty of women cacking their undies in their bmw's ha.

Worst i have driven in is like 5-10ft visibility in heavy snow on the motorway :panic:

About 5ft, who thought it would be a good idea to go up the cat and fiddle in heavy snow. Span the car at less than a few mph, then turned back.
Today was bad, went from sunny to about 20ft visibility in minutes, was horrendous

I was trapped parked overnight on the m11 about 8 years ago when hundreds of people were trapped. Was there about 24 hours total iirc. Just before we came to a stop it was whiteout city - end of the bonnet stuff.

Did everyone just sleep in their cars? Or did you have like a NY black out and chat etc?

Slept in cars. Luckily there was a huge Winnebago thing nearby and the owner was fucking awesome. Basically let people come in and defrost, use his toilet, made about a million cups of tea for everyone. People were coming down to his from all around lol it was like a scene out of a disaster movie or something. But yeah - after defrosting and a cup of hot chocolate from that fella I went back to the car to sleep.
Got through about 1/3rd tank of fuel just running it for an hour off for 30 mins or so for the heaters. Was a fucking nightmare. Hope I'm never caught like that again.

Driving back from Blackpool and it was raining that hard that even with the wipers on full it didn't even clear the windscreen.

I lost count of how many crashed cars I've seen yesterday + couple others having near-misses. Rarely seen that sort of snow that would ice down on the road instantly, it was slippery to say the least. I did call a couple of people afterwards telling them not to drive unless necessary.
Worst I've seen was some fog at night with about 3 feet visibility (meaning you would hardly see past the bonnet), it was like driving through some white soup or something. 7-10 mph on the motorway and took me about an hour to do 15 miles.

Agreed, yesterday was bad. I was driving to the shops for break. One minute it was sunny, I went in the shop, came back out and there was a blizzard.
Also, once it rained so hard in Brum that my window wipers on fast didn't do nothing. I was getting splashed from oncoming cars and literally couldn't see where I was going. I stopped my car, opened windows and seen others doing the same, mid- road.

Holmfirth moor road,
just see the road with the fogs on enough to creep along. there was no moisture in the air, but the screen would freeze over in seconds, even with wipers and neat window mix.
Helps to know your roads.
