Hi all, just become a member here.

i have recently bought a saxo VTR 1999 in absolutley mint condition (only done 22000 in 7 years from new !!!), learning to drive (test on sept 26..fingers crossed) and have been looking at some insurance quotes for my new car.

at the moment i only have a provisional licence, but i have been looking at insurance quotes PRETENDING i have the full thing.

now can i take out the policie like this or do i have to get the quote under the provisional. the reason i ask is that it adds about £100 between full and provisional and i don't intend to drive my car until i pass anyway, which means i will have a full licence then......does everybody understand what i mean ?

also do the insurance companys check to see what kind of licence you have or do they just "take your word for it" ???

by the way i am 25, bit of a late starter i know but hey.

Can anybody shed any light on this ???

if you crash on a provisional and your insured on a full licence which you dont own, your policy is void . meaning you have no insurance

happy days if you get caught ,i wouldnt risk it.

no because if they find out you'll be screwed. The ask for a photocopy of the liscence for first time drivers anyway.

Wait until you have a full then take out the policy.

Just wondering mate, is it the silver VTR that was on Ebay?

Scott - They never asked me for a photocopy of my licence.

iam learning to,also a late starter at 26,iam with quinn direct and i am paying £579 with all mods declared.
i would start if off as soon as you can so you can start building up your no claims.
insurance companys allways ask what type of lisence you have

Just take out the insurance with a provisional licence and then update when you pass mate.

My Girlfriend bought her car in December 2004, insured straight away and then passed in April 2005. This year she will get 2 yrs NCB, so it's like Robert said start plus with your age it will take a BIG drop once you recieve your 1yrs NCB.

Just take out the insurance. Then when you pass tell them and you should get whatever the difference is. Because your premium will drop and you get the difference back i think.

I insured my first car on a provisional license a week before my driving test because it was cheaper on a provisional then a full. Probably because you have someone with you and they assume you don't drive the car as much. I didn't have to tell them that my license had turned into a full when I passed so basically only had a provisonal license for a week of my policy

Some insurance companies are cheaper for provisional than full so check. Depends if you want to do pass plus as well because that will obviously have to be done on a full license

Right. i have checked with some companys (quinn direct and adrian flux) and it is more expensive (£100) to take out the policy under a provisional than a full.

i think that it has already been mentioned but.....

if i take out the policy under my provisional.....then pass my test, and then inform the insurance company that i have passed, what happens to the £100 that they charged me to originally take out the policy under a provisional.

do they pay me it back ?

you see the thing is i don't have to use my car until i pass my test (i work very close to where i live) and if i can save myself shelling out an extra £100 to start with it would like to.

can anybody shed any light on this ??

It depends how far into your policy your are as to weather you got that difference, if any, back.

I took out my insurance on a provisional, so i could learn, but didnt tell my insurance company when i passed. As it turns out, my renewal is due in 2 months so i'll do it then, but don't expect any of that back. They may discount you slightly on your renewal though.

To be honest, i don't think they will refund you.

£100 ain't too bad, but it's up to you.

Lukep.

No it isn't the silver saxo that was on ebay. it was in the trader, honestly its a gem.

2 owners from new (1st being an elderly bloke who broke his hip....sold it to the guy i bought it off).

Only done 220000 miles from new (on a T plate (99)) !

Its red

Completly standard, tiny mark on the front drivers side bumper, no wheel curbing, every recipt for everypart that has ever been bought for it.

Had 4 brand new tyres on it (continental something or other).

And i love it !

Sounds really good mate, get some pictures in the gallery section.

22,000 mile on a T plate is nothing, the silver one on Ebay has same mileage but was an S reg.
