View Full Version : RIP my dog

Not normally one to air personal shit online, but I know theres a ton of dog lovers on here.

Had to let my wee guy go yesterday, he got really ill in a matter of a few weeks, vet tried to help him but the meds didnt work. Had to make the decision as I didnt want him suffering.

Only had him just over 3 years, he was about 7. I feel a bit cheated at not getting longer with him, especially because he wasnt old, and was really fit and healthy up til recently.

Those of you who have had dogs will know how raw the pain is and how hard it is to come to terms with it. Woke up this morning, rolled over and expected to see him lying in his basket :(:(:(

I miss him loads.

My mother had to give away her two bedlinton terriers a few years ago wish I had them now :/

Better a minute too soon than a moment too late is a saying that's widely used in the horse circles to remind anyone who feels guilty about putting an animal to sleep.

Sorry to hear this dude, I'm a big dog person so totally sympathise :(

Sorry to hear this mate. I lost a dog when i was younger, it sounds daft but it's like losing a family member tbh. Dog's really become a part of the family. Just remember the good times mate :y:

I was destroyed when my first dog was put down. Only because I came home and mum had taken her to the vet to be put down. I didn't even get to say goodbye and hug her one last time. Completely understand how you feel mate. Heart wrenching.

Hurts like feck, they are just another part of the family. Whenever we lost a dog we pretty much went out within the next couple of days and got another puppy usually. Sad but it helps get over the loss more quickly i found.

My sympathies to you mate.

it sounds daft but it's like losing a family member tbh. Dog's really become a part of the family.

Totally agree with this.

One of our dog's had to be put down fairly recently at 13 years old, despite still having the energy of a puppy! Unfortunately he developed cancer, and it really was for the best. I think we got him when I was around 9 years old, so having basically grown up with him, it was very hard to take. Luckily our other, older dog is still going strong though!

Sad news - RIP to the little fella.

I feel your pain - I had to have my Cocker Spaniel put down two weeks ago (the day before his 12 year birthday) - cried my eyes out in the vets whilst saying goodbye - stayed with him right up until the injection stopped his little ticker - really hard decision to make but you love them so much it's just not fair to see them suffer.

We also have a 2 year old GS and she (and us) were lost without the cocker so we got another GS puppy asap (same dad as the first one). Best way to cope with the pain is to fill the hole they leave behind. It's not being disrespectful and really does help to cope.

Get yourself another one asap and give him the chance of a good life with you like you gave the other one ;)

What was it that he developed mate ? Some sort of illness that they pick up whilst playing in the garden ?

For those of you who have been in the same boat- particularly Jamie and LVC as it was so recent - you have my sympathies.

Carl, theyre not sure what it was, his xray 3weeks ago seemed fine just like his lungs were showing infection. yesterday they werent draining fluid properly and it was putting pressure on the wee guys heart :'(

They say that time is a great healer and it's true. I take solace in this and that I hope wherever they are they aren't in any pain or suffering.

Sad news :(

It still tears me up thinking about having my dog put down. Didn't think I could go through it again but have a new dog now... Strangely it helped the healing process.

No matter how long you had him for he still touched your life forever. :)

Before my dog got ill we was thinking of getting him a little friend something like a Beagle, my dream dog *Husky* would have been a little too much for him. I now feel like I shouldn't be looking anymore for a few months at least I'd hate for him to be in doggy heaven thinking they've just replaced me lol. How long did you leave it before you got a new dog?

Echo the last part!

It wasn't long, I think it was about 4 months.

I was dead set against it. I couldn't go through losing another one. But a trip to the rescue shelter I met Ellie and she looked so pathetic and needy I just had to have her.

Needless to say she is not short of personality. Couldn't imagine life without her now. :)

I went with my ex boss to have his alsatian put down last year (security dog) after it went for the kill on 1 of the workers. worked with that dog for over 4 years , still miss him now.

Dreading the day my dog dies (german shephard cross collie), she's 9 years old now, had her since she was 6 weeks old.

I'm in the same mind set but I've wanted another dog for a while mostly to keep Max company. Now I feel I have to put that on hold because people will think I just replace things and also because I genuinely don't know if I could loose another like you said.

Sounds like you were meant to find her :)

Ahhh soppy ^ but true animals particularly dogs and cats really do make such an impact on life. Coming home to find someone happy to see you no matter the day or weather :)

Yeah that's what I thought, I didn't want it to seem like we were replacing Blue. But she couldn't be more different than him. Blue was so obedient and well trained, he was a grump but loved nothing more than a good cuddle whilst he grumbled away like an old man.
Ellie on the other hand is naughty, cheeky, does what the hell she likes, but weirdly it was her personality that made the loss so much easier. She's flipped the dog/owner dynamic upside down in our house. Never met a dog like her.

I guess you'll know when the times right Jamie :)

Sorry to hear about your dog :( been through having 2 of our dogs have to be put to sleep, the worst part being I wasn't there to say bye to either of them :( we have a westie that we rescued 6 years ago, he's an awesome little guy and I'm dreading when its time for him to go..

I grew up at my grandparents with 2 dobermans, and I was heart broken when they had to be put down, even though I didn't live with them for long, I had my own special bond, they were very protective of me and they would always sleep in my room when I lived there till I was 4 and then when I would stay at weekend..

Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2, to piss Chr15 off.

Blue sounded like a cool guy sounds much like my nans old dog, grumbled but was partial to a good belly scratch lolol

Ellie sounds like my mums Dalmation - Holly, absolutely barking mad and naughty - but I bet shes a softy.

True on the last part :)

Bit of a shit bump. My Grandad had his 13year old Doberman put to sleep last night at 10pm, I only took her for a walk at 6pm :( I'm heartbroken, I basically grew up with her, and it was the last living memory we had of my Grandma :( 2013 is looking like a shite year already..

RIP Tess and Gabbadog... Can feel your pain dude. We had to make the decision for our first dog few year back now and i genuinely cried like a girl... It's horrible.

Watching our current one getting older atm, he's 13 and running into heart issues and everything and on a shit load of tablets. Horrible knowing that he probably won't be here in a couple of years, just got to make sure he's comfortable and happy for the time that's left!
