we hear a lot about what good things we do and how amazing we are/can be but for lols, what stupid things have you done with regards to your car? we all do it, it's just a way tht life reminds us we're all human

1. dropped the bonnet with my key under, all doors locked
2.didnt tighten a rear shock bolt so bolt fell out, lord knows where
3. tried for to jack a car up without tightening th screw next to the bar. needless to say, i got nowhere and the car never raised...

Snapped a head bolt by over tightening it. Did the same on a water pump retaining bolt too. All before I had a decent torque wrench mind you

Didn't do up the wheel nuts tight enough on a mk2 golf after fitting coilovers, drivers front came off when I was driving it was scary as shit.

2 minutes before it came off I had been down the m4 too!

I bought a Saxo.

LoL, most stupid thing I did was a couple of months ago, locked car without thinking by pushing drivers side latch down and car was still running (was dropping missis and baby off at inlaws don't like to trun car off and on). Was raining too, tried to smash rear passenger window but had no luck, one of neighbours came out an was able to open it with a wire coat hanger.

I had a punto with the black door bump strips on....

A decent mod I thought at the time was to take these off...

So I pulled them off and then got a heatgun to get all the black glue residue off my car....

At that point I found out that my car had filler on the door which bubbled horribly when subjected to the heat....

My dad had a spare door at his scrapyard, matching colour and everything, but he refused to give it me and made me drive my car around for a month with the horrible bubbled filler covered door....

He also wrote nobhead with an arrow pointing to the 'bodge modification' i think he called it.....

I also tried to tint my headlights with that cheap shit tinting spray (i was 16) and bought the car for when i turned 17...

Managed to cover my car in overspray hahah...

Was such a dick!

changing the clutch on my brothers 106

accidentally, i connected a wire to the gearbox earth, where i thought it should go... Turned out said wire was the end of the battery positive which should have gone to the starter motor lol

The wiring loom went Up in flames quicker than anything! Was terrified, thought i was going to burn down the whole car lol

Forgot to torque up the gearbox bolts. Ended up parting from the block ona drive lol

was torquing some wheels on a car while it was on a ramp, stupidly though the torque wrench slipped and cracked me on the bottom of my jaw, bust my tongue and lip , needless to say lads at work were in stitches :)

Only tightened on bolt on the brake calipers, wasn't sure what the knocking noise was for ages.

Reused an old circlip holding the rear pads in on my saxo. Circlip worked loose, pads dropped out but could only go so far due to the wheel. Gouged 2 huge grooves into my recently powder coated wheels. If I had bigger wheels if of possibly lost the pads then been in some shit. I drove round for a week or so too as I thought it was just the pad springs come loose as it made a noise when driving until I braked then it went quiet lol.

Me and D4MJT put the back axle back on, i went for a blast and thought the back end felt a bit lively, turns out the 4 bolts were finger tight, errrrr

Also I may have pulled the steering wheel off once

And my brake pads might have fallen out

He may have pulled a driveshaft out too without draining the box

You know, the usual

Prickle
5th April 2013, 20:24
Forgot to hold the driveshaft and wasted my good newish oil..

Pissed off was a understatement.

Wasn't my fault but when I changed my rear pads they always seemed loose, after some googling realised there was supposed to be clips on them, could have fallen out going down the road, clips were not there previous to me changing the pads, also had my fair share of snapped bolt heads and ringing bolts.

Normally more negligent with myself then the car tbh, cutting/grinding/smashing holes in myself etc, stabbing/cutting common

Worst I think I've done to car was forgot to put the oil cap back on a nigh on brand new sprinter

Drove it about ten miles, then 5 miles back on the motorway checked my mirror for horns to see the whole rear of the van an absolute smoke bomb, looked like it had burst into flames, dump nearly all oil allover the bay

First day of a new job lmao ;)

Had a few moments of idiocy lol, list goes a bit like

600 mile round trip in the work van with the oil light on

Drove from Telford to Luton and back to Telford with no oil cap on the van (only realised when I got back home lmao)

Dropped the van keys down the oil cap when topping up and had to get two screwdrivers to pull them out

Didn't tighten the wheel up properly on my mates 106gti and it nearly came off on a dual carriageway

There's probably plenty more but that's all of the top of my head

Left them on the rocker covers, one accidental nudge later and my arse was twiching like fuck :p

And couldn't start it up as the keys were half way down the engine lmao

Edit: also wouldn't have time to start it up, had to get the keys out before my boss realised what I did

Not sure if srs?

Overflow out of what?

When i changed my axle i forgot to tighten my rear caliper and the bolts fell off on the motorway and the caliper spun and got caught on the rear metal cover, the brake stuck on when i managed to stop and look the disk was glowing red hot and the pads smoking it stunk lol.

Didn't tighten the cambelt tensioner up to torque rating, it slipped back and valves went thunk into the pistons. Initially thought battery was flat as it wouldnt turn until I noticed the slipped tensioner - pulled the head off and unbelievably all the valves were liquid and gas tight and not bent, so renewed the head gasket and counted myself extremely lucky

Gandi699
6th April 2013, 03:37
Also another one as when I was inspecting my 1400 k series and found 9 good head bolts and 1 snapped one, and the engine still ran fine with no leaks! Or the time the tensioner was seized solid and literally nearly seized. Funny looking back at it now

Leaving the keys in the boot then closing the boot. I realise 2 minutes later but it autolocks itself within 60 seconds. I was ever so glad to have a spare key otherwise I would have howled at the moon or something.

Jet washing the ex-girlfriends car, and discovering that day the colour coding on plastics wasn't primed so the paint peeled clean off of the bumper. Oops oookay houston we have a problem.

Company car, filled up at some station and left the petrol cap there.

My very first own car and back then I had no clue about what cambelts do. So one day it went snap and I learned the hard way.

Overflow out of what? .

Im not sure if youre serious. Where do you think it would over flow from? Unless you some how magic oil in with out having to open the oil filler cap. By the way if you still haven't worked it out, I've just mentioned it.

Yes that is right.. however a few people asked the same thing, suprisingly! Dumb of me, I know :wall:

Erm... I was welding a car and poured water on the metal as the underseal had caught light, I then proceeded to hold the now wet metal down with my wet hand and continue welding:panic: was just a little shock :panic:

i dont think its dumb mate, its learning, first time i changed i was with someone else who said poor half in then keep checking

sure there will be pics of red bullet at trax, on track smoking, he asked does it matter if you slightly over fill, lad said nah no bother, but it wasnt slightly, he had put 5 plus im sure, dip stick fired out, oil every where, then went on track where alot burnt off, but the state of his car from it, well the smoke was class

Davyy
6th April 2013, 14:01
Yeah I bet. Mine wasn't smokey or anything.. drove about 10 miles and then got the mechanic out to remove some after finding out it was a bad idea to do.

I had a mini racing flame when I was 17. I decided to do a complete over hall on it as the floor pans were looking a bit dodgy. So I got it up on stands and cut out the entire floor, front to back!! My dog came into the garage and nudged the car, Needless to say when I welded in the new floor the chassis twisted big style. Ended up buying another mini and turning the back end of the first one into a trailer lol

Disconnected the battery to do a small weld. When the battery disconnects it locks everything inc the key that's was inside :(
