View Full Version : New project? What to go for? (Not the usual criteria)

Righty I don't think I've ever made a 'what car next?' Thread so I thought I'd make one.

Me and my dad are looking for a new project to do together in our spare time to enjoy whilst getting some peace and quiet in the garage away from the women in the family.

Ill be selling my AX, the Smart Roadster and he's sold a classic motorbike which he's had.

So to start with we'll probably look to spend upto around £3,000 for the initial outlay on a car.

We'd like something which is;

An up and coming classic with a good scope for appreciaton
Spares dont cost the earth to buy
Has a decent amount of available spares should they be needed
Isn't the norm, something slightly different would be nice

Performance really doesn't matter, not looking for anything remotely toyish
It would be something to restore to mint OE example
We aren't really looking to do a complete bare bones restoration with excessive shell work but don't mind some cosmetics and general attention to detail

So far we've looked at quite a few options through all the old fords, mk1 and mk2 scirocco's, some old Porsches

There would probably be bad rot to deal with on most of those.

I think if you did an original Nova GTE that would fit your criteria quite well.
They rust badly which means lots of bodywork and welding
They are hugely rare as they all got destroyed by rust and the yout' of the late 90's
Not so old parts will be impossible to find
Ever going up in value as there are just none left

EF9 SiR (160bhp)/CRX SiR (160bhp)/DA6 Integra (160bhp)/EG6 SiR (170bhp) (notice a trend yet lol).

All the above should be in price range, all will go up in value, parts are readily available both new & used aftermarket and new & used OEM, non are particularly common and they all come with a B16a already fitted.

I think you'll struggle to have the passion to the restoration to the quality you're obviously capiable of if you get anything anyone of us lot suggested.
You need to get something that YOU just want to do and have a passion for surely?

People quoting mk1 and 2 escorts, they're expensive to buy in the first place. Even a shell is 2-3k now!

Think you and your dad should just have a think as you won't have the drive to finsih it if it's not a car you both lvoe!
