Over heating

My vts is over heating sometimes fan kicks in when gauge is 3/4 the way up, which was always normal for it. And now it might kick in when boiling, if I turn the car off the fan comes on and runs on for 30 seconds or so. Any ideas? Faulty fan switch or something?
And does anybody know what the sliver sensor is by the fan? It's about 2 inchs long and tube shape? Thanks

I just replaced my thermostat in my VTR cos my saxo was getting warmer than normal. Be careful tho and keep an eye on the water cos i reckon it was the start of a burst head gaskets. Not cool at all
