View Full Version : Piston slap? Slightly moves by hand side to side?

How much tolerance does a j4 engine have?
I can slightly move the pistons side to side when in the chamber...
Via hand
Is this normal for a used engine and will be ok? Or should I be looking for a new bottom end?
I was told some pistons are tapered and can do this naturally. Is it true about the j4?
Cheers

Small amount is expected, that's why you have rings to seal, the pistons/block will expand when up to temp, the rings compress with the expansion, as long as its not excessive it should be fine

Cheers dude. Check link? It's a small amount to be honest.

Even with a freshly built bottom end, will the pistons still move side to side slightly?

yea but the rings shud be contacting it
have you had the pistons out? any major scouring or anything?

Looks ok in the link.
I'd be fitting new rings though, I don't think it shouldn't move that easily.
Bottom end doesn't really affect piston slap unless it's severely worn. piston slap is usually from a worn rings or ovalled bore. The movement of piston slap is usually on the same axis as the pin. so that's front to back, and wear for piston slap is usually at the base of the bore.
As above, if you've had the pistons out, slap should be obvious as there would be "lines" going up and down the bore.
I know all about piston slap and bottom end wear, I've got the bent rod and piston to prove it :P
See the bit I've circled in red, that is the effects of piston slap

Not has pistons out no.
Bores look alright. No lines apart from slight lip at top.
I'm just wondering if its worth me buying a new bottom end it taking the risk.

That movement isn't bottom end, so why would you replace it? :P
You can replace all the bottom ends you want, but it looks like it needs rings.

I mean bottom end as in block! Haha
