View Full Version : HUMMING noise when decelerating

I have looked all over the forums but can't find the exact problem that my Saxo has. I have a Saxo VTS, when you release the accelerator pedal the car seems to make a humming sound but goes straight away when you accelerate again.

This happens in all the gears... does anyone know what it could be? (only happens when decelerating, and can feel it a tiny bit on the pedal)
Thanks everyone :wall:

Wheel bearing possibly?

As you come off the accelerator you're loading up the output shaft differently and it sounds like that. A lot of cars do that - is there a reason you think yours is worse than normal? Has it suddenly got louder?

Check level of gearbox oil and consider replacing oil anyway. :)

See if that helps.

Thanks for quick replies... It is quite loud when it happens. It doesn't happen all the time. It's quite strange because it first happened about 2 months ago whilst coming back from a long drive. Then it started happening again since 2 days ago after installing some Bilstein shocks - once again though, on a longish drive. Doesn't happen when just a quick drive.
I will get the g/box oil changed asap
nice 1

Also it has been lowered by 60mm on the front

Have you checked the drive shafts? Mine used to do something similar to that upon weight transfer, eg coming off the accelerator etc, and gradually got worse.
Just give them a quick check for any splits etc.

Could just be gearbox oil tbh. Sounds likely (cheapest/easiest thing to replace too). Long drive = hot gears / oil = possible noise. Get it changed and see how it goes.

Mine does this since i lost half the oil when changing struts gonna fill the gearbox up tomorrow :)

Mine does this also if I stick at 60/70+ mph for a long time let of the throttle and I have a loud humming but stop and pull away again it's fine until I stick at 60+ for a while again :/

That's pretty much the same as what happens on mine.. Soon as I get the chance I'm going to change the g/box oil and hope that sorts it out :)

Yeah same with me it's just funds at the moment haha .. I don't know weather to stay with a vtr g/box or go vts some use a 1.1 g/box but I don't know what difference out the 2 will make :/

Lol I know the feeling mate :panic: I don't know what difference it would be but I can't imagine you would get much top speed with a 1.1 g/box. The person who posted on this thread "ROSS" will probably know... Good luck

Rather than staring another thread I thought I would put it in here coz its basically the same. When I started driving the car there I was driving for about 10mins and then occasionally when I take my foot off of the accelerator there is a pretty loud vibrating noise. It seems like it is coming from either around the stereo area or the centre console. It goes away again when I accelerate. Any help guys? Also when I turn full left lock it sounds like the wheel is rubbing but it's not lowered so cant be?

It sounds pretty similar to my one but on my car it only happens on a long/ish drive, definitely longer than a 10 minute drive. I will be changing the g/box oil very soon as someone mentioned that it is more than likely where teh oil gets hot and doesn't do its job properly. Good luck
