Hey guys, got a slight issue with the car...

I've been out with David (Davidkent) and tried to fit my oil filter relocation. Only, when it came to tapping the oil return hole the M10 tap was way too big!!

Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

Many thanks.

mate i had this problem

the best way to do it is use a 3 stage m10 tap and die kit.

they are hard to find but i just managed it with just the one bit.

It took me about an hour and a half just to get the thread going because it was too big.

Just keep at it i did and it worked. x

Cheers for the reply bro. But what do you mean by a 3 stage M10 tap kit?

Also needs drilling out to a 8.5mm mate

As above, there are a few diff types of block

Drill to 8.5/9mm then tap

You joking? I really do not want to be drilling holes in the block.

Guys just seen you can get the taps with a slight taper at the start will this help? Also I'm pretty sure the whole is already 8.5mm as me and David thought about putting an 8mm bolt in the hole but just pushed in... :S

It needs to be 8.5 to tap with a m10 mate if you have a 8.5 bit try it in the hole if it fits happy days if not you will need to drill it out

There are 3 stages of tapping normally, but since there's a hole there already an intermediate tap should do it.

you should drill the hole to the right size first just to check, 0.2 of a mm undersize will be enough to make it a nightmare to tap. has to be 8.50 hole. :y:

But if I drill it out there would be a lot of swarf in there? Although I just text David and he thinks its an 8.5 or even a 9mm hole...

I have read through a few pages of the thread on how to do it and someone said that it does take a while to get the thread going and to maybe use one on a socket wrench.

Like I said above I have seen that you can get the tap with a slight taper which could make life easier?

Once again every one who commented has no idea.

It doesn't have to be a m10 bolt you use all you are doing is closing the hole and sealing it up. Use a smaller tap and a smaller bolt to seal the hole. Also use thread lock on the bolt.

Yeah true. May just grab a few drill bits from work and see if an 8.5mm will slot in.

That's the only problem, I had a M10 at work (Cycle mechanic) So that was happy days, I don't have any other size tap apart from m8.. I may try that also. Although I don't think it'll work. Had the thread lock ready :P

buy yourself a tap set, they are like 12 quid and you will find hundreds of uses for it.

I'll just get work to buy it as I always use it anyways.

Normaly the size of the hole would be perfect for a m9 tap but not many people have a m9 so that is why just about everyone drills to 8.5 and taps with a m10

So yes some people do know what they are talking about this has been coverd a few times if you have a look about

Yeah that's funny that just about every one drills the block, Fuck off you crank.

I have sold over 150 oil filter kits and not one person has had to drill the block.
