Bloke I know has an 86 defender, ex army, helped him put a 2 inch lift kit on it 2 or 3 weeks ago, has a snorkel, wider wheels and tyres going on, 2 sparco buckets and as far as I know he's planning a roll cage also.. Hard jeep to drive!

Nope http://forums.mg-rover.org/

Love a good old defender. Would have been a bit impractical for us though, so we settled with the disco, and made a compromise that we bought the v8.

And that forum is for mgs and rovers.

Not land rovers...

I wanted a defender, but the same money on a 180k miles 28 year old 90 buys the disco 2 td5 I own now.

My moms got a 300 tdi 90 though and we had a 2.5td 110 for 14 years as a kid. Discos are far more reasonable money but then the defenders hold the value come resale time.

Never been offroad properly in mine but in the snow we've had nothing at all could stop me, even when trying to get stuck.

Here's mine, ex-military 1986 LR90 - various upgrades including: rock sliders, mud terrain tyres on wolfrace 5 slots, underbody protection, hi-lift jack, soft, hard and bikini tops, hi-back race seats and a 200Tdi running 1 bar turbo pressure and upgraded fuel pump and single box SS exhaust - shifts like sh*t off a shiney shovel:

P.S. You don't need to lift them or add a snorkel unless you're going really deep wading - mine's never got stuck and she's been in pretty deep water.

Got a new one in my work from Kahn Design.
I liked the idea of them, then I drove that one and just thought "nahhhhhhh"

Carl-h
30th April 2013, 20:38
I fucking hate all these shit 'khan' range rovers and stuff I'm seeing recently. If anyone knows how to ruin a car it's them.

You have to 'get' driving a defender too. I don't know what the new ones are like but the old ones are so loud and uncomfortable even a half hour drive is annoying. They bounce round, don't accelerate or stop particularly well and over 65 you can hardly hold a conversation without shouting. Discoverys are much better in this respect. They are fun to drive in their own way though the defenders.

Roof down (or rolled up), couple of chicks in the back, stereo blasting towing a couple of jetskiis to the lake/beach or door deep in mud/snow/rocks/etc. sliding all over the place with a stupid grin on your face that's what Defenders are for anything else and you need to be looking at other cars - they're functional built for purpose workhorses with a style you either like or don't - nothing about comfort, noise insulation or any modern features.

I get more people looking at my Defender with respect than I do in the WRX - says it all really.

There you go this is what Defender's are all about:

Still love the Tomb Raider/Lara Croft editions. Often tempted to get another, so practical for where I live and still quite rare here in France.

200 or 300 ?

mechsman
1st May 2013, 10:16
If I had the money I'd have the following:

Base vehicle:coil sprung double cab 130 with tithonus military spec interior

Add:
a 6x6 conversion with "walking beam" rear bogie setup,
all salisbury axles with extreme duty half shafts (I'd stuff uni mog axles under it if I break those!),
air lockers in all axles,
Perkins or caterpillar diesel lump (straight 6 or V8 I'm undecided on yet),
body lift and suspension lift (exactly how much would depend on total suspension travel and wheel/tyre package),
some decent wheels and tyres (Insa turbos maybe?),
a decent external full length cage tied to the chassis,
full length safari rack with lights and rear ladder,
decent winch bumper and bull bar set,
landrover 101 rear cross member and Rubery Owen "drive through" hitch point,
Belly slide plates,
rock slider sills with jack points,
snorkel with plumbed in g box/t box and axle breathers

Other:
Two powered axles (with lockers) camper trailer using a "walking beam" suspension setup.

Would be pretty much unstoppable off road and reasonably civilised on road.

200 or 300 ?

Neither on an F plate haha
Somehow I doubt its running the original 2.5 TD though (the shit engine)

Davo106

Steffs is a 200tdi.

AlexB
1st May 2013, 10:22
See i wanna keep mine relatively stock when i get it

130 crew in firenza red with black roof
Landrover options on snorkel winch front bars heated screen/seats package and alpine sterio package

Then add a set of 16x8j bead locking rims im just trying to decide which i like most lol but theyll be black for sure

Plate means nothing mines a 1986 with a 200Tdi. LHS snorkel indicates a 200TDi but wanted to ask the question. Doubt very much that it's the 2.5 NA engine in it and certainly wouldn't make it wading like that if it was.

So Steffrallye what you got under the hood ????

Edit: Thanks Davo - thought as much. Has he modded the Turbo/Pump/injectors or is it standard ?

Steffrallye
1st May 2013, 11:07
As you spotted with the snorkel it's a 200tdi, not touched the pump or turbo, tbh I don't think I will, I've never came across a point where I've wanted more, drop it into low box and she goes anywhere. The diffs blow easy enough as it is lol

She has
200tdi engine and boxes
Updated steering damper
3" lift springs with dislocation cones
Terrafirma dampers 2"+
Insa turbo special trak tyres
Light bar with lights and rear light
Super comfortable BMW leather seats
Optima dual cycle yellow top battery
Terrafirma competition winch bumper
Goodwinch 9500 goldfish winch
Dyneema 11mm synthetic rope with stainless Devon 4x4 fairlead.
Some tread plating
Uprated headlights with TD5 surrounds
Safari snorkel
Electric spal fan
Diff guards
Fully polybushed
Tarantula rear bars and uprated steering bar
Straight through exhaust exit thro rear quarter.
Some other bits and bobs and some colourful paint

Lovely spec you have there.

As the saying goes "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

However I've recently done the "rotation mod" on the mechanical fuel pump and it brings the power in at 1200 revs rather than 1800 revs and understanding more about how the pump works and was put together it's real easy to do and def worth it.

Steffrallye
1st May 2013, 11:15
It's easy enough to turn back tbh so might be worth a fiddle. As im sure you know they break constantly so there many other little jobs atm, latest being my lights are stuck on from the other night lol, so had to pull the fuse

friend has a defender, awesome things

Have one at work too that i can use, but only thing i can say... is there really cramped for a guy of my stature.. 6ft 4, and 106kg dosent really make driving comfortable in a defender.

However, the defender we have at work is pretty nippy, i beleive its the 115 bhp version, goes pretty well compared to my transit crewcab which has slightly more power

deano_123

used to have a fleet of 66 of them in libya, singe cabs, twins, station wagons, all just as shit as each other

How did you manage that mate?

Nick_Bush
8th May 2013, 21:01
Ive driven quite a few of these, in all ages and wheel bases.

I can honestly say, it will do exactly what you want off road and is probably great fun as a weekend car, but you wouldnt want to drive one every day of the week, but many people do?

Horrible seating position, heavy, noisey, handbrake position, hard to get in and out off, etc, IMO.

Most of the blokes I know who have one has a Range Rover Sport or Vouge to drive everyday.

How did you manage that mate?

went round the bend and loads of shite on the road, lost the back end hit the kerb and skidded on its side for about 25metres
