Why on earth would you give a 5 year old kid a real rifle of any sort weather is was loaded or unloaded. I wouldn't even trust a kid with a air rifle never mind a .22.
Gee I don't know, I think there needs to be a lot more guns in circulation over there, right now there just isn't enough to go around. Seriously.
Americans are fucking stupid.

If you're strange enough to teach such a young child how to shoot you'd at least have the initiative to keep the gun via lock and key.
Idiotic irresponsible parenting, that said it was a mistake which has cost them dearly I can't imagine what they're going through. Hopefully it will make a few crazy Americans realise their mistake and they in turn learn from this families nightmare and maybe some good can come from this horror story.

If your going to shoot the earlier you learn to shoot responsibly the better. So I'm don't see anything wrong with teaching a 5 year old to shoot. But agree totally the parents should have taken respectability for the rifle and never allowed the child to use it unsupervised. Its idiotic to allow a child to simply play with a gun as if it was just a toy.

We all know the sensible thing to prevent this happening would have been to give the little girl a gun too.

I'm strongly resisting launching into this debate with you again.
For fuck sake how stupid a comment is that, a 5 year old can barely wipe their own arse let alone be capable of handling and shooting a lethal weapon properly. Young children should not have any direct exposure to firearms at all, period.
Astounds me how some people can even contemplate this sort of thing..

I agree some kids develop rather slow but you can have 5 year olds that can rdrive karts and can even use bows. Heck at 6 years in many parts of the world you can race karts competatively. I dont see anythng wrong with exposing kits to firearms. They key thing is reponsability. If you teach a kid responsabily early enough it will stay with them throught there life. If you dont well there are plenty of people in there 20s who still lack it.

Alternatively, let children be children and teach them responsibility via traditional means.
Teaching a 5 year old how to use a gun and hoping that they one day become responsible is one of the most retarded things I've ever heard. Do you seriously want to live in a place where children, who are barely out of preschool, are competent with guns?
I've no idea where your head is at. I can only suggest that you go stand in a dark room and give it a good shake.

lol and people wonder why for a developed country the UK has some the highest violent crime rates in the world
I totally agree with Heliosphan, the notion of children being able to use guns is completely unbelievable. You say the word responsible- a 5 year old child does not know the first thing about responsibility. They are an infant who rely on their parents protection completely.
We can see the results of giving children access to these weapons in these news stories, and yet you would encourage more exposure to this sort of thing?
AxRacing, your perspective actually scares me.

I was taught to use a gun at that age, and I've manged just fine for the last 23 years to not shoot anyone.
