View Full Version : Deciding a path

Hi folks,

I'm after some advice / answers from some seasoned saxo / 106 / ax owners.

I currently have a Saxo VTS ph2, which has a few half decent mods. I did a top end refresh on the engine over xmas, including water pump, timing belt and tensioner, head gasket, resealed the cam ladders, etc, and it feels very healthy. I have a saxsport 2" system on it, and manifold, OBP quickshift lever and Kam linkages, GTi-6 brake upgrade, poly beam bushes, 21mm torsion bars, roughly 35mm lowerage, PAS delete, and a few other trinkets.

Basically, my shell isn't great. The sills appear fine from underneath, but I'm aware of some bubbling just creeping up under the skirts along the door lines, plus theres evidence of corrosion in the rear sill / arch corner when I remove the door cards. The worst by far are the inner wings, which are just crumbling away.

I'm thinking that really, a reshell utilising my parts is the best option, rather than repairing an ailing shell.

With this in mind, I'd like to go down the path of using either a clean ph1 106 shell, or an AX shell.

Am I right in thinking that the ph1 106 shell will basically bolt in all of my mechanicals, but I'll need to tweak the rear arches to get clearance with a disc rear beam?

If I used an AX shell, which is currently my preferred choice, I don't really know a lot about them. The beam mount points are the same I believe, but again I think I'd need arch work? Also I'd be wanting to run 14" steels so I'd need to ditch the 283's and get a set of 266's?

What about the engine, would the 16v sit on the mounts or do these need tweaking? I'd buy a donor, so I would basically be going down the route of swapping all of the drivetrain and loom into the AX, minus elec windows etc.

Any thoughts or advice welcome, I'm just trying to work out what's going to be best for me!

Personally i would buy a donor or a shell of which ever you wish, and then obviously prep it, take time on it etc etc etc. Do any welding and have it sprayed, and undersealed so you have a perfect shell. At the end of the day if your going to do it so it right! Unsure on mountains etc etc though!

Black paving is getting common, you can get some decent flags these days..

Id get an ax and put all your stuff on it.. Sleeeeper

Also the brakes, 283's won't fit under 14's! They pretty much rub the inside of my 306's 15's!

Yeah I thought that would be the case, they're close on my VTS 15"s. 266's would go under 14"s happily though.

Ho hum.

Does anyone know if there are any special mounts required to get the 16v lump sat in an AX shell, or does it sit on the standard mounts?

S1 Rallye's are nice, but I'm not after something really rare and pristine, I'd want to keep the 1.3 and sort it nicely, I'm after a tidy AX shell so I can lash a big lump in. I like AX's, they're sweet. It's akin to being in your own little timezone driving around in one.

I've more rallyes kicking about than AX gt/gtis in fairness, not to say you shouldn't do the ax swap though. They are light and look awesome
