Can anyone remember the test they did on top gear with the optimax??

They tried it on 3 cars and it only worked on hi spec cars.

all this talk about giving extra horses and still i dont know why higher ron fuel does that... is it because its giving a better combustion as the air/fuel mixture is still the same.

wont do any noticable difference on the Saxo TU engines.

What octane would you recommend for the Saxo then? I use 97 Super Unleaded from Sainsburys. Costs 2p a ltr more but was told if no performance increase was noticed might get slightly more mileage and would do the engine good.

Most 'everyday' cars are designed to run smoothly on RON95, the use of RON97 and even RON99 i doubt will even be noticable on a regular car.
I was thinking about buying a Zonda tomorrow to really see the difference, you know as you do...

I might try using the RON99 on the 106 for a month or 2, just so that i feel like my engine is cleaner i guess...

It's usually just additive enriched fuel... so engine and fuel system cleaning improvements which leads to better burning rather than anything in the fuel thats providing more burn. hence why it'll give better mileage too.

the same can be achieved by getting some Millers, Redex etc fuel additive stuff which contains cleaner, octane booster and other bollocks that is added to 'super' fuel. That way you by-pass providing any more cash to the government in taxes or the massive profits of the petroleum companies :Y:

‘Ferrari fuel for the road’ - hahaha, roll on 300hp + from my car then :err:

think the handbook says it'll happily run on 95 RON but 97 is recommended (i think tho :)), anything above that will do fock all

so would i have to empty out my whole tank to add this new fuel or can i fill up with it when im low on standard unleaded

It will mix quite happily and if you continue to use it you will end up just running on a full tank of it.
I used to use Optimax in my Tommi Mak EvoVI and my Impreza before rallying took over. You do notice a difference, cleaner and sharper throttle response but don't think I EVER GOT BETTER MPG. To use this extra power you have to drive quicker and faster, hence lower mpg.
Still alot of the rally lads in Evo's and Imprezas use Carless fuel(like aviation fuel) £12 a gallon so I guess V-Power is a bargain :A:

i take it this is the new optimax??

Yeah they've replaced Optimax at 97 RON with V-Power at 99 RON. Probably because Tesco do 99 RON fuel

I never bother putting anything other than normal Unleaded in my Saxo. A waste of money putting Optimax and the like in a 1.6 VTR lol

Dad used to have to run his old Tuscan on Optimax but the Tamora runs fine on Unleaded, just doesn't pop and bang as much ;) . If he can use it in a TVR occasionally, I can use it in my Saxo
