Looking to sell my c2 and get either low and slow mk1 mx5 or something nippy, a few of my mates have mentioned mk4 golfs, the 1.8 turbo. When looking on the likes of auto trader there all 1.8 gti in the title, only 1/2 say 1.8t gti. So they make a 1.8 gti and a 1.8 t gti ? confused myself now...

Keep the C2

No one likes mk4s

Well I'm guessing you mean mk4s, they suck.

yeah mk4. I just get bored with cars quickly and fancy a change.

I'd keep the c2 for a bit, decent enough car.

If you're buying a car purely for a change then maybe buy something that would hold value, then when you get bored at least you won't lose much.

Yes they made a 1.8 20v none turbo for a few years and then changed it to the 2.0 8v engine. They're 125bhp so not too bad but theyve got nothing on the turbos

m4tt274
20th May 2013, 09:36
they do a none turbo yes.
I wouldnt bother with one, a VTR is quicker, and the cost of parts and spares is rapey.

The 1.8t are brilliant, but they drink fuel considering how quick they pull you.
the mx5 will be a quicker, more fun car all round than either golf, dont slam it, just service it and put decent tires on it.

Mk4 Golf's tend to hold value better than most cars though. Don't pay too much on a shitter and you won't lose much. Low miler's still command decent money and still sell on for decent money.

Brother has a 20vt Mk4 150bhp model. He likes it. Its not rapid, but is pretty punchy when it comes on boost. Comfy too even since he lowered it.

Surely a decent option then, although insurance I'd imagine at 20 must be a fair whack on them!

A turbo remaps to nearly 200bhp so comes straight past a mx5 lol

Having been around a couple, maybe im getting boring, but i would just leave them stock at 150bhp. I know they are quick, but they arent madness quick, and after the usual 200bhp map they absolutely cain fuel, like evo 18mpg sorta consumption figures when driving them like you would expect to.
Around Blyton park or Cadwell a sorted VTS or mx5 will at least keep up with a remapped GTI i think, the big golf wont just come straight past.

L33h

My audis a 1.8t remapped and does go past them lol. But youre right about feul i only get 28mph and thats driving slow lol

I'd rather a MK2 Golf GTi 16v.. anyyyyyyyyy day of the week. Infact, give me one now. ;)

Stissy
20th May 2013, 10:44
the mk4 GTi comes in two engines. the 1.8 20vT and the 2.0 16v (N.A). The 1.8 is the one you want, just to be clear, all the 1.8 GTi's are turbos, the 2.0 however are not. At 20 years old a mk4 GTi is a pretty good car. The insurance isn't too bad, neither are the running costs - and it'll smash the shit out of your C2. They're more comfortable, safer and the VW scene is massive at the moment. So there's plenty of meets to get involved with, parts to buy and plenty of help and advice out there.

MX5 is a no, (from my personal opinion of course). Cheap, tacky and gay. Unless you're getting one as a second car to piss about with at weekend then i'd recommend against it.

Other options:
1. I had a 2.5 year old mk4 Cupra when i was 20. Same 1.8t engine but 180bhp model. My insurance was only 1000 too. cracking little cars. i ended up keeping it for two years because i liked it so much.
2. The Mk6 Fiesta ST? depends on your opinion of Fords really, personally i don't like them but for what they are you get a lot of car for your money.
3. E46 M-sport. the 320d/320i/330d. all of these are affordable?

The 2.0 isn't 16v, it's 8v and only 115bhp - pathetic, shit engine.

Youre wrong you can get a early mk4 with a 1.8 none turbo but still a gti. Tjey changed then engines later to the 2.0 8v cos the 1.8s were shit

Also the cupras woth 180 bhp have a ko3s turbo which is the turbo from the mk4 anniversary

I'm not sure about the first line...

the second line, its more than just the turbo that's different mate. its a myriad of parts. but that's beside the point of the thread.

They didn't change them to the 2.0 8v.

The 20v non turbo was available in the mk4 for around 6 years and ran along side the 2.0 8v.

This might sound really stupid, but why did the 1.8 have 20 valves if it wasn't a turbo?

Not sure why, probably no apparant reason. Maybe just for cost. Its not uncommon though in engines.

What's the differences between those parts though over the 150?? They are all the same seeing as the k03s is a straight swap so the asscociated parts should be the same.

Even if they are slightly different, they play no part in the higher power figure.

I always thought the idea of 1 extra valve per cylinder was for the turbo recirculation. thats why it was 20v and not 16. but is they did a 20v none turbo then it doesn't really make sense?

well (i'm not too sure on the golf but i assume its the same) in the ibiza the 150bhp model is known as the FR 1.8t and the 180bhp is the Cupra 1.8t.

The Cupra has a bigger intercooler which is front mounted, whereas the FR is mounted at the side. The Cupra has bigger pipes to each side of the intercooler, a bigger turbo intake pipe, a bigger induction pipe to the front of the car, bigger airbox, and a different map on the engine.

L33h

Stissy

I thought the FRs were a diesel?

Both mate, in both FR and Cupra

you can get the petrol FR - which is the same as the mk4 golf GTi 1.8 20vT, 150bhp.

The diesel FR - 1.9tdi, pd130, same engine as the mk4 golf pd130

The petrol Cupra - this is the daddy version of the mk4 ibiza, 1.8 20vT same as the mk4 golf anniversary 20vT, 180bhp.

Or the diesel Cupra - 1.9tdi, 160bhp, similar to the Mk4 GT-TDi but a little more tuned with 10bhp more.

I had a 2000 1.8 20vT, it was the top spec model and such a nice car to drive. Yes they are common but then so are most cars. If you are going from a Saxo to it (which I'm unsure of, but it was my step) then you will be amazed at how nice they are to drive, the gearboxes are really smooth.

1.8t 20v is a great engine, I'd rather have one than a mx5, won't regret it either, going to an mx5 is like trading your c2 for a saxo vtr

Mk4 golfs can made to look nice too, if you fancy a coupe, try the audi tt, there getting cheaper, I've had one of them and cupras, loved them

Nik_L
22nd May 2013, 13:49
Yeah ive also noticed TT's have dropped massively in price. Can pick up a decent 100k 2000/2001 225 for about £2k. You would pay similar money for a decent 20vt Mk4 Golf.

Ive been working on my old mans 225 TT recently, brakes all round etc, and its a nice place to be, drives good, goes really good. Only thing i would say is they aren't the comfiest to use as a daily, pretty harsh ride.

To keep everyone updated, i ended up getting a mk4 golf gt tdi 150. they map well and its not hard to see the happy side of 200 on a budget or the happy side 0f 300 if you have the money to play with. mines totally standard and does like 55/60pmg average :)

yea as long as it says on the logbook then it should be fine. I think there's a sticker in the boot under the carpet sayin that its a gt. There's ALOT of people putting a gt badge on the back, changing a few things and selling them for more lol

Sweet. yeah i went from a c2 vts that was getting like 35 if you were steady to the gt tdi thats faster, and comfortable, smooth, quiet and does 55average and 60mpg + on runs. Went to leeds about two weeks ago and got 220miles on £20 of fuel. thats cruise control at 60 in 6th like :homme:
