View Full Version : Buying from a dealer - knocking them down (on price)
How much discount can you realistically get when buying from a dealer. With a bit of haggling, how much do you think I could get a £2k car down to? Don't know anyone who's bought from a dealer before either so literally not a clue. Is it a fixed price and if they don't get what they want they send you out the door or is it fairly negotiable?
should be able to get it for £1800 easy.
what car is it.
they will take less if it is cash as well probs tax reasons but that is for smaller dealers
I would start at £1500 and go from there..

I always haggle a dealer.
The biggest haggle i've done, was when I once offered £25k on a £30k car i was looking at for a friend.
The salesman laughed at first and said if i was joking, i was being dead serious lol only because all the others of the same spec around the country were around that price. Anyways every week he'd phone me up saying its been reduced a grand, until it reached about £27.5k iirc
A golf TDi, 52 plate with 150k miles. There are others around with similar mileage for less and I'm gonna part ex the sax with it as well. It's from an MOT garage so they can fix mine up and put it through an mot and flog it on. Does make me a bit uneasy to think if they've done that with the golf though. Is there anyone is Poole, specifically hamsworthy who would be able to have a look over for me if I throw them some beer tokens? I'm good with checking over bikes but not much good with cars.

does raise a good point... if it has history and you find someone to look it over should be all kosher
good luck, sounds a nice little step up from a saxo.:y:

I'd always say you should walk away with no less than 10% knocked off the price they are asking.. Start lower to that, aiming to meet at that, at the very least, if you have to walk away paying full price, make sure it has car mats, a full tank of fuel, fresh tax, and fresh MOT..
Full tank of fuel is always a good one to negotiate with, because fuels getting no cheaper, so £60 worth of fuel is good for you really..
Test drive it, make sure you go somewhere you can put it on full lock both ways, and go slowly in 1st, then you will hear if driveshafts are on the way, and other bits and bats like that..
Make sure it goes into each gear smoothly, check all the tyres.. You want good tread on them all, because you don't want to be buying new tyres after a month.. Check all the dash lights, light up when you turn the key to the 2nd click, if not, bulbs could have been removed to hide faults..
not really a lot else to do!
Oh, obviously check if the oil looks gungey, Headgasket could be gone... Water in the oil, oil in the water..
Oh, another point.. Search the garage on google.. If anyone has had issues with the garage, chances are its somewhere on the internet!

If you get money off, you'll get a worse trade in!

Ask what they would give you trade in, and haggle it up..
Think I'll leave it http://www.yell.com/b/Hamworthy+MOT+Centre-Tyres-Poole-BH165DA-901019677/
I have been offered one in Truro which is a damn sight closer. Means I will save a lot in fuel. It does have 175k on the clock though. Not sure if that is getting on to too much mileage. I know its a diesel and a volkswagen but...

Sound like a bunch of incompetent idiot's by the reviews.
I wouldn't go for it personally, The PD engines can hit high miles if they have been looked after well. If its got the service history to go with it i would take it at the right price.
Personally I would rather take a 200k car with full service than a 100k without any.

With regards knocking dealers down, they're all different. You just have to think what your willing to pay. Offer it and be prepared to walk away but leave your number if they change their mind.

From my experience Dealers would have paid at least 1k less than list price usually so theyd put £200 or so on for prep and then top it up what they want profit. So should be able to get a few hundred off but there there to make a profit so as has been stated they'll usuay take a bit off the part ex.
Okay something to think about guys, thanks.
Just rang up the place in Poole and apparently the cheapest they could do is £1700 with my car included. I can't get 1700 together but surely they are having a laugh. Apparently its 'just been reduced'. Clearly cos nobody would buy it at their inflated prices

Well, I have done a deal with vauxhall I got them down at £600 off price of the car. Which was priced right in the first place anyway. Got them to raise the p/x up to £400. Didn't do bad as the price they set up for the car was the same sort of price everywhere else.
Rough idea.
How much was it to begin with? And do you mean from the same place or just another trader.
Thing is technically I'm asking them to take a quarter off the price

Well it was priced up at £6,000. I got the car for £5,400. They offered me £4,200 as p/x I got them to up it to £4,600.
Cool, so you didn't pay that much really then!

it all depends on the car, if its 2k then he probably wont shift that much. But rinse as much out of him as possible, get the car down firstly, to like 1.8k or something, then start even scrutinising more, it needs new tyres, it needs new wiper blades, tax is due soon etc. It's always good if you can play the long game, not so much with a dealer, but pretend you're going to see other ones that day, or pretend you're not really interested in the car and have a more almost 'anything will do' attitude.
a second hand car as low as 2k from a dealer will probably be PX'd for about 1200. then they'll add the admin fee on top of that, then profit on top of that. so you don't really have too much to negotiate on. 1.7/8 would be a good buy i reckon.
I agree on the price but my problem is the max I can borrow is 1500 unfortunately. Ill ring them next week and see if they will budge any more. Problem is I can't go up there and haggle cos its like 150 miles away which is a long distance if I'm not coming back with the car!

Phone them up and tell them the most your willing to pay is £1500 cost to change. The most important thing to you is cost to change. It's not good a dealer offering 1k more on your car if the one they're selling is 2k overpriced.
What does cost to change mean?
Carl-h
7th June 2013, 20:25
The total amount of money you give the dealer. If you pay 2k for the car but they give you 1k trade in then the cost to change is 1k. That's the only important figure. Wouldn't matter if the car was 3k but they have you 2k trade in, it's costing you the same.
Right I'm with you. Yeah thats exactly what I want to do, I will mention it to them. Cheers

Yup. It took me a good 30 mins to haggle but i won some off.
He had a garage full of Mercs and Bimmers ffs. Ofcourse he could knock money off.
Always worth a go tbh, I've only ever had to do it once and found the best thing to do was find a fault / something expiring i.e tax, and just use that as a starting point and see what you can get off.
Good luck with it!! Let us know (Y)
Well I may be looking at the PERFECT one on Sunday night, not from this garage. But someone from watford is going to look at it today. And unless they take no money with them or its on fire, I can't see how they won't take it really. Going to be gutted if its gone!
