Again sorry for posting on here about a clio, but everyone on CS.net is totally rubbish for replying to threads & I really could do with a little helpppp :( I have a strange little annoying (to say the least) rattle/knock, in 3rd gear mainly between 3000/4000rpm ish, its prominent in 3rd gear, although it does happen in 2nd sometimes and occasionally 4th; however it is intermittent. Some days I can't hear it, and other days it's bad. I'm not confusing this noise with the dash rattle as I have managed to stop that, I've also read through all of the forum & searched topics & as of yet haven't found out what it could be. I've tried pushing the gearstick down when moving and the noise starts, that doesn't cure it either. I don't really have much of a clue about mechanics etc, but could it be a gearbox mount? It seems as if my gearbox is a little temperamental as sometimes when I go to put it into 1st I can almost feel it under my feet move the entire box? I have no idea if this is even possible.. I've also read it could be the heatshield although I've watched videos from cs members & it just doesn't sound like that.
To explain the rattle it sounds like a bolt is really loose or come loose and stuck somewhere rattling around in the gearbox, it seems as if it's coming from the centre/mid left of the car so more or less mid passenger side ish..
I've tried to do a video myself but you can't hear it on there.. Any help will be appreciated if anyone knows ote :) mims

Could be a few things, 1st, easiest, and cheapest thing, check the exhaust isn't touching somewhere, and check that a heat shield isn't loose in the exhaust tunnel.. My CRX used to rattle now and then at certain revs, and it was a heat shield that was loose, must be the level of vibration at that revs that set it off...
Could also check the gear linkages aren't touching anything.. Again, my 306 has a quickshift on, and i know that touches the exhaust occasionally in certain gears, which makes a little rattle for a few seconds..

Exhaust bashing the sub frame perhaps, it's very tight with little clearance as standard. changing the gearbox mount is easy enough I'm sure on my progress thread on CS I covered it, new rubber mount were about ten quid for the main box support.
Could be other things but start there, oh and upgrade your dog bone mount to a poly one. The driving experience will be better after wards trust me

Did you get a new driveshaft? Sounds how my driveshaft did.. Or wheel bearing?

Yea might be exhaust as said. If it was the gearbox or engine mount it would bang as you pull away. Driveshafts nock as you turn and wheel bearings rumble

Easy way to see if its the exhaust knocking from "dogbone" mount being worn is stick it in reverse and be quite sharp when you lift off the clutch at the bite point. Do this repeatedly and if it makes the clunking sound that's what it will be. Also the exhaust backbox mounts are notoriously shit! Such a bad design!

This. Replace the innards of the mounts with suqare powerflex poly for about 8 quid a piece, works wonders and takes 20 mins to fit
