View Full Version : smoking update!

A question to any fellow Saxo smokers! Do you consider lighting up whilst driving to be a hazard? If I'm in town I'll wait until I'm stationary-eg at traffic lights. On the open road if I want to start smoking I'll check that the road ahead is straight and relatively traffic free before taking out a cigarette-then look again before momentarilly dipping my eyes to light up. Also I make sure my cigarettes are close to hand before setting off and not covered up by the usual in car paraphanalia! I think it's crucial to remain focused at all times when driving and starting to smoke at the wheel-I'll admit-can be a temporary distraction.

Good point. not something i think about now as i wont smoke in the car with my boy.
But before hand i'm sure i was guilty (maybe) . Think every journey has its distractions though.

Before I gave up I'd smoke all the time driving, looking back I'd say it's more dangerous than being on your phone. If you drop your phone you can get it later, drop a fag and you're pretty fucked

This, absoultely gets on my ends.
I'm more worried what damaged it'll do if it lodges in my engine bay somewhere, or gets stuck onto the body somewhere like a carrier bag does.
seen plenty of bin fires from just one cig end.

Smoking kills as it is. Smoking and driving? Well, Einstein I ain't but I'm pretty sure it's not overly safe to look away from the road to start a fire just below your own nose!

Normally wait till I'm out the car to have a cig but every now and then I'll have one in the car on first start up till its warm by that time its normally smoked
Dunno how anyone can say a fag could damage your car, throw a end out the window and the cherry ( the lit end for non smokers) will fly off straight away so its left with a bit of cotton wool tip, if that worry
ies you then you should seek mental help

On topic OP: as far as i know, its against the law to light a cigarette while driving anyway? Smoking is ok, but lighting one you should be stationary.

Should be banned, even worse is when people throw their dog ends out the window. Had one bounce up onto my windshield once :clapping:

it wouldn't do any damage anyway mate, even if its lit, for how long its in contact with your car you'd get more damage to the bodywork every journey from stone chips.

spot on.

I've done it occasionally in the past - i'd usually use the ash tray to put the end out it, or waited until there was nobody about. i can understand it annoys people but in reality it'll never do any damage.

Not cotton.

The composition of cigarette butts is largely misunderstood. Each butt contains remnants of tobacco and paper, as well as the filter. Filters may look like cotton, but they are actually made of plastic filaments. These are made from a type of plastic called cellulose acetate, which degrades very slowly – anywhere between 2 months and 15 years, depending on exposure to air and water.
Cigarette filters are specifically designed to accumulate particulate smoke components, including toxic chemicals such as cadmium, lead, arsenic and zinc. Littered butts leach these chemicals as they decompose, contributing to soil and water pollution and impacting on wildlife habitat.

A dog end found its way into a Volvo truck's air filter and caught fire. With a trailer full of butter which also caught fire. With other trucks around, that also caught on fire. With the MontBlanc tunnel all around it, which also caught fire and killed 39 people in the process. The tunnel was closed for ages, and the resulting traffic jams produced previously unseen pollution peaks.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mont_Blanc_Tunnel#The_1999_fire

That's just one example of fire caused by a cig. I'm not too impressed at people throwing whatever out of the windows, and any other "yeah but" bullshit excuse that comes along.

The cause of the fire is disputed. Different accounts report it to be a cigarette stub carelessly thrown at the truck, and it supposedly entered the engine induction snorkel above the cab, setting the paper air filter on fire, a mechanical or electrical fault, or poor maintenance of the truck's engine.

Ludicrous claim, and complete uneducated spread of misinformation. Filters are made with non-biodegradable fibers (cellulose-acetate) and discarded filters are full of toxic chemicals. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2697937/

Sorry, i should have put degradable...

Bio indicates that the use of "Living" organisms will break it down, which is not the case.

Cellulose Acetate is a plastic which WILL degrade over time, much like ALL plastics. The chemical conc. used within it will determine the length of degredation.

Btw, the way you slander people from the off and provide nothing but a single, more than inaccurate website is foolish...

Depends which papers you use, not all contain those.

Yeah will degrade over time, that's why they seem to pile up in some areas. Takes between 18 months and 10 years to degrade depending on type of filter. Might as well just chuck out anything out of the windows as long as it breaks down.

Btw, the way you slander people from the off and provide nothing but a single, more than inaccurate website is foolish...

You may want to do a little research by yourself. Don't see why I should hand the internet back along with a complete thorough research to you, after you claim that filters are perfectly safe to toss anywhere. So much effort needed, and such a hassle sometimes to dispose of litter properly ain't it.

For someone who I assumed has no mates, you have an awful lot of mates who end up in bizarre situations.

I had a mate once who threw a fag end out of his window at high speeds on the m4, the wind took it and it landed in reactor number 3 (Chernobyl) obviously I don't need to tell you about the chaos that followed.

a lot of 'apparently's to back it up too...

there's no where in the Offences against the Person Act of 1861 that states you can be prosecuted for "causing harm without intent".

Even if there was such a thing as "causing harm without intent" the punishment would not be a fine.

The police would never pull someone over for a report of throwing a cigarette. This is even more unlikely if the report coming from another car. Imagine being a police officer and getting a call saying "someone in the car in front has just dropped his cigarette out the window"

you would not go to court for dropping a cigarette.

you would not get a 4th degree burn if a cigarette thrown from a moving car landed on your neck. cigarettes are not white hot flames that instantly cause death if you touch them - its an ember, you can quite happily let it rest on your hand for a few seconds before it starts to burn. i've caught myself on the arm no end of times and never got anything more than a mark. if i stood a meter a way and threw a lit cigarette at you, the chances of you getting burnt are minimal.

All I can say is have a read through this Manu

http://www.anapolschwartz.com/practices/burn-injury/burn-degrees.asp

A 4th Degree burn is just below a 5th and 6th degree burn, Which you generally die from.
A 3rd degree burn is serious, usually caused from Acid or a real fire.
A 2nd degree burn is minor and causes blistering, At most this is what you would get from prolonged contact with a lit cigarette.

Manu, You're wrong...
Believe it or not, you're not:

Oh dear, Manu and his awesome trail of made up ridiculous internet story's has been rumbled.

Quick elaborate on your story to make it sound real, maybe find a few random articles on the internet that will help the masses believe.

My story is has been rumbled? Coming from you, that's a compliment considering the effort you put through trolling every single post I make.
S-T-O-R-I-E-S. P-L-U-R-A-L. D-U-H. You can all carry on tossing your fag butts out of your windows to be honest, seems like way too much brain processing involved in using an ashtray. Or even being considerate and avoid littering.

No shit Sherlock, thanks for the heads up :y:

A 4th Degree burn is just below a 5th and 6th degree burn, Which you generally die from.

:clapping:

And obviously a law firm website is better at defining different burn injury types than, let's say a medical one. Thanks for the unneeded recap, in a thread that's about cigarettes out of the window.

you're misreading what i'm saying...

Considering that you made an effort with the spelling, I guess better being a half wit rather than a complete numpty. Though you have a point about the importance of it all, it is a saxo forum.

Note: that is all i chuck out of the windows,

Same thing as throwing a regular fag out of the window then, if you roll with filters. Not sure if it is a good excuse, looks like the exact same nasty habit to me. Anyway, silly me going after the saxperience smokers club and their many ways of justifying anything and everything. The "because others do it in town centres" and "I'm a chemist so my rollie butts are made of cotton" did crack me up though.

Manu, can you actually read?

Seems you just make up your own stories to suit your feelings. I never said that i did it because other people did, i just admitted to doing it. In no way did i mention town centres either.

Also the Chemist part, i didnt say they are made of cotton?!? if you read what i actually said, rather than get confused, then we'd be on the same page... Laughing at your own jokes is also often considered a mental disorder.

Never argue with an idiot, they will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Manu, you don't need trolling you do an excellent job of trolling yourself.

Seriously, where do you get the majority of shit you post it's comedy gold.

fyi - I don't smoke thanks but if I ever had the pleasure of driving in front of you, make no mistake I would rummage under the seats for a fag end to skilfully propel into your air filter, which would no doubt give you a legitimate reason to post some outrageous bullshit on the internet.

You're obviously not that well educated if you dont know what the picture is of - I'm sure if anyone here has seen hitchikers guide to the galaxy they would recognise the picture. FYI, its not too small... Get your eyes tested.

And it shouldn't matter where the information come from, Its all the same. I'm not spending all my time looking for the most 'believable' website when any other with the same information will suffice.

The point of the website wasn't in response to chucking a fag out the window, It was a response to your believable story about someone getting 4th degree burns from a fag nub.

Anyhow, As Brett has said, I'm arguing with an idiot... I'm out before you bring me down to your level.

All the information is all the same on the internet, so you can pick it from anywhere and it will be accurate. Don't try my level because you're on one of your own, very high up indeed.

Good good, now that's been cleared. And your stamp sized picture proved the point of me being wrong. Obviously, not recognising a film is a clear sign of being illiterate as anyone with a little bit of culture would have known instantly, so thanks for clearing that too.

Get your eyes tested.
