Went into a local ats centre and the fellow behind the counter said they couldn't balance vtr wheels because of it not having a centre bit for their machine he then joked with his friend and called my car a chav chariot.
Was he just having a bad morning / hates Saxo's or is there some truth in this statement, if it is correct then where is the best place to get them balanced?

He's full of it, you can balance the wheels. The problem most places have is that the either don't have the four stud adaptor to make the balancing machine compatible or they can't be arsed to set it up.

There's only one place close to me and that's ATS and they charge £10 a wheel. It means I have to pay over the odds for tyres or get them balanced separate at a cost.

There's always Citroen or Peugeot but again it'll cost.

Just ring around all your local fitting places and ask if they can balance solid centre wheels.

Mobile tyre fitting vans usually have all the adaptors on board.

Phoned insurance they said no charge for putting on 205 gti wheels, so thinking I might do that as funds are a bit tight this month and i have a set of speedlines nicely balanced.
Tyres are standard 185 55 15, will i get scrubbage?
I know it will throw the speedo out but as it underreads by approx 3mph anyway it should make it more accurate....... When your speedo reads 60mph you will actually be doing 62.7mph. is result obtained using a calculator tool ( car is a VTR )

Yes he talking bollocks. I have the same issue with my vtr rims. They can be balanced, it just means that the adaptor has to be swapped on the balancing machine, and most places can't be arsed. My local F1 Autocentres does mine and they balance up fine.

^^ That. Part of my job is fitting and balancing wheels & tyres. And whilst solid centre wheels mean changing the mounting bracket on the machine, it does not mean they are impossible to balance, 2 mins to change the mount and job done. The only issue is ensuring they mount square on the machine as you have to use the wheel nuts to hold them on but if said person knows theyre job propperly then there should be no issue.

i have the same issue! loads of places are saying they dont have the adapter.
I need to ring around soon as i need 2 new tyres.
last time i got tyres the place just didnt bother balancing them! i didnt notice for ages as most of my driving is 30mph runs to work and back.

its much more fun motorway driving unbalanced wheels with the steering wheel trying to rattle your teeth out :)

STS tyre pros (if you have one local) can do it, they need to be plate balanced!
