I've been running quite a bit lately to cut down on some fat. The problem is after I run 2 - 3 miles i start to get shin splints so I stop. On the way home they just get worse and worse I'm in absolute agony atm.

Question is how the fuck so i stop them? Buy some proper running trainers?

I assume you are road running, best to run on grass if you can help it as i'm sure the shin splints come from the lack of give in the tamac.

When I was younger I got shin splints from a treadmill! (Barefoot running FTL.)

I just stopped running altogether for a few months when I had them (still could play footy ok though!?)

Proper running shoes would probably be a good idea though? :y:

Oh OK in that case then I would have said ill fitting trainers or the trainers you are using aren't suitable seeing as the treadmill has a bit of bounce in it.

I think they might but I don't want to go buying some for a silly price for them not to work lol

Mate, put the treadmill on a slight incline it takes the pressure off your shins a bit, you might not be able to run as far but you'll burn more.

Also you might not have a very good running style, I had a real bad style and had to change it. A running coach showed me how bad I was. You can see some videos in you tube it way help.

If you want trainers go to start fitness on Pilgrim Street in the town, they'll measure your feet and find ones that will be good for you. A half decent pair of Asics can be had for £30

Start fitness are amazing, just got some Nike free runs from there. The guy spent ages with me going over what i needed and watching how i jogged/walked/stood, they have guys free runs in amazing colours too :D

I had two gait analysis done last week and although the results were pretty much the same, the type of shoe recommended was a lot different.
I run through my shin pain and it goes away, I never run more than three days in a row and always make sure I have a good three/four days off every so often and do something else in the meantime. Seems to keep the pain to a complete minimum for me, more always a dull ache when I drive or something.

Also check out youtube videos on shin splits on ways to help them stop, I tried a few on there andthey worked for me :y:

There's your shin splint problem right there, there's no shock absobtion and all that good stuff. Puts all the stress up your shin and into your knees.

Just a pair of cheap Asics will make a massive difference. Treat yourself, remember the weight you loose running will give your bike a better power to weight :-)

Oh, and stretch lots before you run, makes a massive difference for me :)

Ok thanks alot people. Looks like I'm going to buy myself some new trainers tomorrow :)
I do stretch before I run but I'm going to try and do it abit more. They only ever hurt during running and about 2 hours after. I ran today and they feel fine now lol.

I'm not tryin to loose much weight just a bit body fat to tone up abit :). Power to weight ratio is fine... I just want a faster bike haha

I used to suffer with shin splints, so went to a local running store and the do something called GAIT analysis, determines if you overpronate etc. I got some proper running trainers and I haven't had any issues since. A decent pair of running trainers will probably sort it out mate.

When I was in basic I had bad shin splints, PTI told me to run through it and they will get used to it.. It actually worked! I had no more shin pain after running everyday for 4/6 weeks..

But then....

I got compartment syndrome in my calves

I got compartment syndrome in my calves

I know a lad who got a MD for that, can be bad and you have to get surgery to sort it out.

I'm going to have to tbh. Still haven't got around to it yet.

Last time i went i attempted a run. Ran about half a mile and had to walk. It got to the point i couldn't even walk quickly the pain was that bad lol. So i went for a swim instead haha

When I took up boxing I got shin splints bad, very bad from skipping and running.i kept at it though and they finally went and when they go they should never come back.

I was the same, jogging was difficult and at times even walking was difficult when at work the next day.i went to the phsyio and the guy was a brute with me,was gonna twat him.

Anyway you can do stretching, ice packs on them, buy proper fitted trainers, run on soft ground etc but I did none of these and it went in time.

Shin splint ca also be caused by not warming up before running. Make sure your warmed up and prepared for the run

I got compartment syndrome in my calves

I did the same when I was serving an ended up with compartment syndrome in my shins and both sides of my claves requiring 3 ops, I'd never say to anyone to run through it ever.
Best thing to do is look at your footwear and how you run ie heal toe, just toes, flat, then look at your gait ie do your feet collapse in (overpronate), center or on the outer edge (underpronate).

I had to do all this with in the last 6 months as I found even just doing circuit work set my shins off after my ops, realised that when I move quicker/bounce/run i underpronate and tended to heal strike. Bought the correct footwear and focused on trying to land toes first so the body naturally acts as a cushion/spring has really helped and now with a good warm up and stretching before/after I can happily say I don't get any problems even after 8+ miles :)
Best way I found to run on your toes was to run with your body leaning slightly forward, so nice to be able to run again pain free after 4 years on the sick :)

I used to get them like a motherfucker! Get about half a mile, and here they come! I just bought some decent running trainers, and just battled through it.. After about 2 months, of running 3 miles 4 times a week, it slowly stopped happening! They were a killer, but you just have to carry on.. A gym trainer told me if you go on a treadmill, and go on a slight incline, that it helps a lot..

You also have to give your legs some rest time, if you don't let them rest and recover, you cause damage

I tried a slight incline n it made it worse for me lol. The trainers do really help tho lol

Thanks everyone else that commented lol

Unfortunately I think the best thing is just rest! When I got them it would start after about 3 miles or so and get worst the more I ran. I asked a few people what would help and they said just rest. After just over a month it was fine! If Your worried about loosing fitness just spent the month doing cardio that involves no impact (for example cycling, swimming, punch bag etc.) and it shouldn't be to bad when you return to running.
