This is how she looked after I collected her

http://i785.photobucket.com/albums/yy135/alig_90/20130805_103645_zpse33a1005.jpg

1998 Peugeot 106 GTI 1.6 16v

Bought her for the grand sum of £500 and she is to be turned into a track toy although due to finances its going to be a bit of a long term project/restoration.

Earlier on this year I bought a new house so now I have a nice big area to work on and learn about the car.

Yeah thats right bought it a week or so ago.
Its not too bad took the bonnet raisers off for a starters! Got loads of pics but my phone is being a gay and can't link to them.

Im pretty sure its the alt. Belt as the batt light occasionally comes on the dash. Mango_wes has got a new one for me to fit :)

Im way past the colour to the point I even like it. Just need to get it motorsport stickered up and no one will even notice the pink!

I know literally bugger all about cars which is why this project is so fun as im learning step by step.
I've managed to strip most of the inside without breaking anything so so far so good.

Pics will follow pending on me getting the laptop back from her majesty lol

First thing was to lose the krap from the car:

http://i785.photobucket.com/albums/yy135/alig_90/20130806_222853_zps3d77bdf9.jpg

Now just need a black cambelt cover

http://i785.photobucket.com/albums/yy135/alig_90/20130806_222834_zps74ec58a1.jpg

My little bro is loving helping me work on the car :)

http://i785.photobucket.com/albums/yy135/alig_90/20130811_212050_zpsc87284e9.jpg

An hour or so later looked like this....

http://i785.photobucket.com/albums/yy135/alig_90/20130811_215102_zps995a02ff.jpg

Gave up after we removed the seats and saw the carpet would need a stanley knife to get it out easily.

Set to work on the doorcards tonight. Not as a simple job as this few kilo lump of krap was stuck inside the door....

http://i785.photobucket.com/albums/yy135/alig_90/20130812_215041_zpsb59f8ec5.jpg

One door done (till maybe motor and wires come out)

The sound deadening wool stuff was wet inside the reat doorcard area.

Was expecting a car full of rust after seeing this:

http://i785.photobucket.com/albums/yy135/alig_90/20130809_223316_zps6a3e2449.jpg

Yes thats the tyre you can see through the hole! Light area was getting soaked!

Feared the worst after seeing this:

http://i785.photobucket.com/albums/yy135/alig_90/20130809_223233_zpsa5b3e089.jpg

Got it off with a wallpaper scraper (excellent done in few mins)
Turns out ita pretty minor and no holes :)

Short term plans are to tidy her up a bit and get the interior stripped out and tidy. Same for the engine bay basically do all the free stuff as we have xmas round the corner.

Longer term it needs the suspension raising by A LOT which should be good fun as I've never even attempted anything so ambitious but with a nice shed and huge carport it would be foolish for me to pay someone to do it.

After that its getting the wheels and tyres sorted. I really like the wheels but they have a lot of weights on them which makes me think something must be wrong with them?

Next will be the brakes. Now I want them to be really really good as my engine is going to stay standard till it dies so unsure to stay with standard discs and good pads or go for a bugger setup. Thing is I plan to get the car very very light so not sure I need more. I want it to be as well braked as my Twingo really.

Cage will come next and all the little bits like linkages etc etc.

Would like it done for summer but thats way to ambitious. I'd say summer after will probably be more likely.

Bonnet raiser gone...
http://i785.photobucket.com/albums/yy135/alig_90/20130813_213042_zps2e4f582f.jpg

Was hoping for an alley bit of kit to sell, but turns out they were just some hard plastic spacer type bodge job things! Oh wells looks better now I think.

All doorcards removed now. Haven't taken out window mechanisms yet as not sure how hard perspex windows are to fit and if they are too much of a pita?

Tucked up for bed (with clifford alarm flashing away and beeping at anything that goes near it)

I think maybe there are so many weights on the wheels as there are two different branded tyres on the front. Im praying the wheels are straight and true as i quite like them and want to keep. Is there any way i can get them checked?

Got quite a few things for sale now GTI leather door cards, Parcel shelf, smoked rear lights, speakers, interior trims etc

A tenner!!
Get in!

Hopefully more surprises would be nice!

Started removing that tar crap from the footwell and ran out of extension cable so no real progress this weekend gone.

Did remove the tints though. Man I love the heatgun its just awesome :)

Next job is sanding down the rust on the insides of the arches and getting the wheels off to look inside.

Whats the best tool/grade of paper for this job?

Did some more stripping today. Scraped all that krap under where your feet would rest off and got to the big heavy looking bit of mat behind the dash and though 'screw that as the dash will need to come off'

So much wiring in this car. The clifford alarm itself is like a spider web of krap! May even pay someone to remove all unneeded wiring from this car as it looks like such a ballache and knowing me I'll take something out for it to not work.

Another reason I haven't removed the alarm is because then I can't lock the doors as some idiot thought delocking it would be a good idea.

I may have solved this though as I got thoroughly fucked off with the missus and did this to the car

http://i785.photobucket.com/albums/yy135/alig_90/20130830_165037_zps13d92d39.jpg

Argument plus missus accidentally banging the door on the post and me quitting smoking resulting in me trying to smash it to bits. Gj I didn't have a hammer as the car would have been totalled!

:)

TWeird development.

Now the alt belt has always seemed a bit squeeky and noticed the batt light occasionally coming on the dash.
Assumed alt wasn't performing up to scratch because of the belt so ignored

Tried starting the car yesterday and it tried and then gave up. Every turn of the key since then it made a noise like someone getting tazered. Weird. Assumed not enough battery so hooked it up to the mains.

Now the little battery machine said the battery was half full so you would assume there is enough power in the batt to start the car. Nope. Had it on the mains for a few mins and hey presto car springs to life!

Tonight same thing happens. Though didn't bother to hook it up just noticed that when you turn the ignitoon on there is a loud whining noise. Out of curiosity I whacked the hazards on and funnily enough the whining was alternating in tone to the flash of the lights. So with a headtorch I look in the bay trying to find the problem. All I can tell is that the noise is below the battery/around the gearbox area.

What is the problem?

Starter motor?
Battery?
The clifford alarm draining too much battery?

Yates
31st August 2013, 21:45
Starter is behind the engine. And if it starts then surely it's working. Wouldnt be affected by hazards. Sounds like battery isn't holding charge. Is it getting used? Cos if not the battery will be drained by alarm. Which from what it sounds is the problem. Can you drive it at all? Give it a hour drive after a charge, see what happens next time you start it up, but leave it a day. Least you know then

Sell the alarm bit pointless on a 106 even more so if your gonna track it.
Use the money to fund something else.

Ironically one of my favourite film parts. Spent every free minute in Afghanistan 2007 watching this as there was no tv or electricity anywhere but the ops room.
Good times ;)

This week may see me remove the dash and hopefully get rid of that terribly heavy looking bit of carpet/sound deadening stuff.

The aim is to have a stupidly nimble and very light car from which to add throttle bodies and go show the turbo boys what these little french cars should be all about

Nope thats dirt and cobwebs. I will either replace the body parts in indigo or maybe even respray the car in Renaultsport liquid yellow.

In the meantime its pink. Its just a colour it doesnt bother me. I could have a whole crowd of people laughing at it. In fact that would give me pleasure having people hate lol

http://i785.photobucket.com/albums/yy135/alig_90/20130911_213121_zpse929792c.jpg

Eventually armed with a game card I got most of it off and then the penny dropped that I had white spirit in the shed and it came off in seconds.

Is there anything behind this important or can I drill away?

Removed my electric mirrors so have a set for sale. Was in the van during the hot weather and had my hand out the window at 70mph and noticed how much of a difference an open hand made compared to a fist in drag terms. So im going to get evo style mirrors. Will make a difference considering at foxhole a standard car will hit 120mph no problems.

Oh and the door damage from another angle ;)

Im officially glad im not a mechanic!

Try to remove headlights.....need to remove bumper....

Remove ecu to look at ecu tray.....one of ecu tray bolt snaps while undoing it

Get ecu tray off (whilst the remains of the bolt are stuck in the car)....look at engine mount.....engine mount looks fooked.

Here's a pick im no mechanic but im guessing this is causing the vibrations in the car?

Remove angel eyes (and therefore bumper)
Remove fogs and clean bumper
Clean interior/treat rust
Remove dash and tidy wiring
Remove sunroof and weld/bolt in metal plate

I too am questioning this lol.
If your turning it into a track car shouldn't you be spending your money more on the engine side of things bigger brakes and ov course a roll cage before you go trying to tidy the exterior up, but what's the point trying to tidy it up if its gonna be driven hard on track.

These cost a lot of money and im not sure I have the confidence to change such vital compnents myself. If im going to do it its got to be done properly.

This is why im doing the small fairly straightforward and cheap jobs first.

Yes its going to be a track car but I love these little cars and want to keep it as a forever car. Hence going back to basics and starting over from scratch.

Also its looking like im rejoining the army BUT as an uber remf. Can you guess what? Makes sense as I can then retire im 15 years if I so wish and work p/t

Best of both worlds really. Get to wear the uniform, do a worthy job while still getting most of army benefits and civilian ones.

For now it sounds good. Maybe in a few years I might go do something different maybe even navy/air force.

Ref the doors I'll be removing the dash as well as cleaning all the crap off the floors as well as possibly replacing rubbers and also cleaning it all up around there. Its a bit anal for a track car but seeing as I don't think its going to go anywhere near one for at least a year might as well do it.

Was starting to get worried about my english for a bit!!

Using a welder on the roof will not be a very bright idea as i believe the heat expansion will probably create a wave effect on the metal.

Also why get a new door ???
that dent looks like it will push out , better have some scuff marks on an evenly coloured door than a perfect different coloured door !!!on your track car too!!

A panel beater should be able to sort it for less than a new door and spraying. You could push the worse out yourself.

AlexFocusST

Push out? Lol have you seen it?

The question is have you tried it?

Just take the doorcard off , wind the window up , take the protective film off roughly where the dent is and apply pressure to see if it pops out.
Obviously it will leave some creases , but i guess a blue or yellow door would look worse on it. Should have been more thoughtfull to start off with!!!

Saxo owners have it lucky!

Removing lights means removing lights
For 106 owners removing lights means removing bumper.

One thing that is odd is the floor basically underneath where your ass would sit on both sides is dentednupwards a bit I just assumed as the car is stupidly low they had hit something underneath.

Bit of downtime so thought I'd write a to do list.

Remove dash and try and tidy wiring and rid of sound deadening
Sand down primer and spray arches (or just hammerite?)
Sand down and spray under the car up to rear beam.
Clean up inside of car
Custom doorcards
Fix carbon cannister pipe
Investigate any leaks
Move ecu into car (how?)
Replace gear linkages
New fluids and filters change
Brakes all round
All new suspension and rear beam
Bucket seats and harness
Possibly new wheels
Semi slicks
Roll cage

Road test!

Hopefully by next weekend I'll have had a chance to get down the scrappy and source some standard rear lights and headlights and a glovebox clip thing.

Then onto halfords for the rear arches and boot.

Top of my head I'll need some filler for a couple of tiny holes, a wire brush, some acid etch primer and some coloured paint perhaps white?

your being condescending to people that know alot more about car prep than you do... so far reading this thread youve taken your anger out on an inanimate pink object... not really done any graft to get the car "track" ready or "restored" and if you turned up at a track day you would get laughed out of the gates... i got laughed at, at snetterton because there were 4 posi blue saxos in a line... so a pink 106gti... you know where the gate is...

spraying the engine bay white is a ridiculous idea, it wont show up oil leaks all it will do is get smothered and look shit sooo fast... youll keep jet washing it and then wonder why the car doesnt start... oh thatll be because there is water being basted into all the connections at 100bar...

best thing todo (this is free advice so listen) go to a local race track when there is a meeting on that runs similar cars to yours, look at theirs and compare the differences... make sure your car is safe and can handle a track day, its very hard on cars despite what people say... have a think about what you can afford todo and what you want todo... there are alot of knowledgeable people on here, so use their advice to your advantage

:) best of luck

Back on track..

I take your points onboard and agree to an extent.

However on a car like this stripping is THE main track prep. Something I have done myself without help or experience and ideas about white engine bays are just ideas. Its up to people like yourself to comment and offer advice so I can progress.

You have to realise this is a long term project its dry thats the main thing. I work 55 hours a week have a missus and a child, a family and other shite to do...I'd love to spend days on it!

Im actually hoping people laugh at the car on its first trackday! By then it WILL be ready to shock a few. Im even considering a blonde wig so people think they are being overtaken by a girl ;)

Some hard graft kicking in ..... Sorry if mist it in the post but it looks like a well known 106 back in the day was it forgot her name Kelly or Kerry ?

Kellys pug? I doubt it. Saw it a few times at different shows and it had mad paint jobs and a lot of work done.

People no what gtis are capable of so can't see why your gonna shock people in a standard pink gti considering what's on tracks nowadays.
Now if it was a turbo gti or a supercharged gti then yes that would shock people but it's just a standard gti. Don't take this the wrong way but my guess is people might laugh at you for driving a pink gti.
If you do make it to the track in the next 10years if the cars finished by then all I can say is you've got balls just simply for turning up in the pink 106.

If I can make the car handle well, safe with nice balance I won't need 500bhp ;)

ldavies
15th October 2013, 20:27
But they are good handling cars anyway so yes you can improve the handling and of course bigger brakes but you still need some good power for pulling out the corners etc.
Not saying you need 500hp but you will need more than what you have now if you want to really impress or shock people.

Your missing the point.
What I'm saying is what's gonna make your 106 different to the rest that's already on track for you to shock people obviously apart from the colour lol.
I think if you wanna shock people then you need to defo be looking into a few tuning mods of course the suspension set up and brake set up is number one but still not enough to shock people. I would be looking into a gasflowed ported and polished head so you've got the power from pulling out the corners and not just having the set up to get you round the corners if that makes sense.
Don't get me wrong I own a 106 and the handling is awesome of course but things have moved on there's a lot of better handling cars on track with more performance too.
I just don't think the standard 106 is going to shock people imo

hard_corejoeboy
15th October 2013, 21:13
I agree to an extent. However with decent brakes suspension and semi slicks and going at it 110% should be enough to surprise a few. Also my old saxo was waaay faster than a 700bhp carbon fiber bodied supra (well kind of as its turbo blew up after 2 laps whereas I was lapping all day) ;)

ldavies
15th October 2013, 21:17
If you wanted to surprise people you should have done a sleeper.
As for headwork gasflowed ported and polished I would say that is a must for you for the track.
Get over on 106 owners and speak with a guy named Liam he done engine builds he will do you're headwork he did mine for my current build.

Im possibly going to be slowly building up the car so its indigo blue. Most of the bodykit is in bad condition and was held on by heavy blobs of crap. Also the interior needs painting so could be a good place to start. Also when my missus car dies I will use it as a donor car and its blue :)

Thats all in the future though. For the here and now I've bought a haynes manual for 106 off amazon for 25p!! Plus postage so £3 all in BARGAIN and will be very useful!

Just after a cheap trolley jack now as using a twingo one is dangerous and a royal pain in the ass!

It wouldn't surprise me to see a pink Gti on track. I'd just think it's another car that was unfit for road use and has been turned into a track car for a laugh.

Saw a civic covered in Astro Turf at Knockhill once.

hard_corejoeboy
28th October 2013, 09:04
Im in two minds on the colour but if I can slowly turn it indigo without it costing anything much its gotta be worth a go. Am even considering losing the gti kit altogether though I think it would look a bit pants then.

Can't wait for the haynes to turn up. As I haven't much to do I may as well get the dash out and get rid of that thick heavy mat behind it.

28th October 2013, 09:55
I'd be tempted to spray it, doesn't have to be a neat job but it would be a great learning curve for you.

I sprayed that mx5 I had NATO green, not that I'd suggest that colour but a flat colour, white or even something shocking like a day-glo colour wouldn't be difficult. You could even roller it on if it's a matte finish lol

hard_corejoeboy
28th October 2013, 10:11
Your mx5 looked really good as well.

I know someone with spray guns and indigo is non metallic. Is it just a case of primer and then paint? Or do you have to lacquer afterwards?

holdawayt
28th October 2013, 12:41
You'd need a lacquer if it's a gloss finish, matte paints tend to be quite hard wearing so a lacquer is not necessary, but matte lacquers are out there.

Had a set of raptors laying about so will put these to use on the car. Added bonus of being fairly light and cheap track rubber too. Can also sell the one's currently on the car to fund other things.

Im also awaiting the bible aka the 106 haynes manual. So thats a good purchase!

I've set myself a target for the first phase of the car(brakes suspension tyres roll cage etc)to be the summer after next. Then a summer of trackdays and maybe we'll start looking into engines

Thats gives me plenty of time to tidy it and to make it look pretty too and I know you like pretty alex ; )

You should have taken it for a few track days before you ripped it apart, you would have more fun throwing it round than you would painting the wheels a pretty colour.

Thanks. I was thinking that myself. At the end of the day when I was younger growing up I loved the look of the 106 GTI and always wanted one. It never really happened for one reason or another and I think becayse of that no other car has really interested me that much. Sure I've had fun in other cars but for me (like the 205 gti is to some) the car is perfect in looks and general dynamics. Hell with the money I've wasted on cars etc I could have had a porsche by now but again im not interested. All I want is that ultimate 106 parked in my yard. Not as in the best in the country but as in what I want exactly. I have a good idea and im chasing that. Why not? Maybe I'll learn some stuff on the way. All well and good I say!

My avatar pic is roughly where I want to be looks wise. Performance im after at least 200bhp/tonne and a sweet nimble agile car thats capable of chasing the big boys with too much money.

Is that so much to ask. It will spend most of time on track and occasionally if its a sunny summers day take it out for some fun.

Well I hope you end up at the track and I think it should stay pink as well even though I liked the liquid yellow idea earlier.
People would be embarrased when you overtake them which would be something to laugh about :D

I've just been looking at a BHP/Tonne calculator. Seems a good figure to aim for although alot of weight would have to be lost.

i.e. standard car is 120bhp/0.925kg=130
So a fast setup I'm guessing is 160bhp/0.800kg=200 ?

How much weight can be lost bearing in mind you'll add a roll cage?

BTW 2005 is the new pension scheme mentioned by Yates earlier, not 2015. And 55hrs a week + kids etc.....seems like you are overworked so surely thats the reason progress might be a bit slow!

From my profession, my honest opinion - if your working that many hours to just put food on the table... Why "waste" the little money you have on the car.

You would be much better to invest that spare money towards a course/qualification to re skill yourself into a different career which will return lots more $$££€€¥¥¥ in the future

Im part way through my army reapplication so thats my plan. Pension will carry on etc etc

The Twingo is taking £200 each month unnecessarily as im hardly even using it so thats going. Its not like im particularly hard up compared to some but a nice house takes a lot of my wages each month as well as 300-400 nursery fees, sky tv all bills etc etc.

Things will get better. The army will pay me more instantly as well as giving me genuine free time (missus will be at work when im off a lot hehehe)
