i had this exact same problem after i went through a hedge. It turned out that the only hting which needed replacing was the Cap where the raidiator fluid goes in to as it wasent holding pressure or something. no idea how it works but i was Releaved it wasent hte headgasket!

Would expect you could do it yourself for a couple hundred quid. Car will never be the same again tho after the head gaskets gone. So it'l probably be better/cheaper to buy a new engine!;)

Just had the head gasket done on a 106 1.6 8v. Cost was 310quid inc a cambelt. Possibly the thermo stadt playing up. If you drove it with the light on i can pretty much garantee the HG is now fucked. Could have been sorted if you'd got it done when the problem started, my money would have been on a dead thermostadt (10quid and about 20 mins to fit)

if you didnt run it for too long on red and stopped straight away it might still be ok!
I had this problem turns out my radiator was knackered , it cost me £140 for parts and fitting and its been ok ever sinse. Still runs at about 1/2 - 3/4 but the garage says this is normal for my model VTR. My radiator is tiny compared to most others

actually matt it didnt shock shock horror!!
I knew the headgasket was shot on the VTS due to poor compression and oil leek , if this guy has no leeks or loss of performance i say you just need to check the radiator etc

My car has been overheating lately. Not on the red but on the 3/4's. We changed the thermostat last night to see if it was that but it's not . It's a bit better but it's still not what it should be. I'm guessing it's the rad now. It's between £60 and £80 for a new rad depending on which one your car needs. Don't know how much fitting it is though
We'll bodge a VTS rad into mine as a phase 2 VTR rad is smaller than the phase 1's and VTS's

3/4's is acceptable on a vtr, mine runs at 3/4's all the time after a new rad and everything checked over, the garage said it is fine aslong as it doesnt hit the red zone. Some run cold, some run hotter but both are ok

Mine never used to be like that. It used to run on the motorway at 1/2 and went to the 3/4's when you were in traffic and now the faster you go, the closer to the red it goes :P
On motorway journeys its on the 3/4's and when i get off the motorway the temperature goes down. My car is backwards

do u drive it in the 'R' gear? If so you should try using the numbered ones, might sort out the direction problems your having? :D:

my radiator went on my old vtr. cost 80 quid for a new one from gsf car parts and fitted it myself, only a couple of clips to change over. piece of piss.

mine does exactly that and so have a few other people tolds me theres is same well odd! 3/4 on motorway then when u slow down and enter normal roads it goes back to 1/2 !!!! well odd but ive been told its normal........
i cant understand the logic in it, it goes to 3/4 in traffic jams aswell then fan kicks in
