Thought I may aswel make a start on a project thread. I've now purchased an XSi as my new project to restore to mint anal standard.

As per the title its an S1 1.6 XSi with 89,000 on the clock. 2 previous owners the majority since new being an elderly gent until a few months back.
It's got a reasonable amount of history and is in original condition.

There's a few bits to address such as a new drivers seat (bolsters buggered) and some bits to be repainted due to the common s1 lacquer peel but generally it seems sound in all the right areas. AlexB kindly endured the 8 hour round trip with me and drove it back & he seemed quite happy with it.

So ill start with all the original ad pics and we'll go from there.

Looks awesome! I love S1 XSI'S, they just look "right".

Good nick aswell, good luck with the resto!

On another note, I noticed the rev limit is higher out of this than on a VTR. How do the lumps differ if at all? Or is just a higher limit to do with ECU?

the 1.6 xsi lumps are the same as the 1.6 rallye, j cam, higher comp engine (apparently) etc etc,

I've spend hours looking on eBay, auto trader, piston heads, car and classic, and the usual forums. Every so often a suitable gem comes up. The AX was a non brainer that it would be good given the mileage. This one was the 3rd that I'd enquired about. The first being a 205 GT but that needed alot of tidying up compared to what was advertised. And the second was an S1 Rallye in black which looked fairly tidy but failed to mention Cat C.

Look the xsi looks. You going for a full restore are just painting and fixing rust?

Havnt found any rust yet but regardless ill be giving this the same treatment as the AX, toothbrush & cleaning products at the ready

Cheers mate. As Monka said I've been reliably informed that the XSi has the same setup that the later S2 Rallye adopted. Not sure exactly what's different compared to a VTR though.

Im not sure its got a higher comp ratio as only the 1.4 xsis got domed pistons. They should be dished in these and the s2 rallyes. Not that I doubt itd make much difference really all in

Right well I guess the saying 'start as you mean to go on' applies here.

As usual there's no particular method in my madness but it all gets done eventually. I've given the car a good check over underneath and the first thing that made the OCD side of me twitch was the underside of the sills, i cant stand half washed cars :-) so this is my starting point

It's coming off quite easily on this one so I'd certainly say its just road dirt & grime. I use autosmart Tardis on the underside, its very effective. Once its all off I've given it a good wipe with quick detailer to clean any Tardis residue off as its strong stuff.

And as per the ax, looking good Willsy. Looking forward to updates

Certainly just seems like general grime on the XSi as its relatively easy to shift. The AX on the other hand was very thick & stubborn and took hours to remove so I suspect that there was a layer of under seal on that one.

So that concludes the drivers side footwell area.
I've had another look at the abs system as to why the light is on. I'd already had a look and noticed that the abs sensors had been removed (possibly both broken) and that the main plug to the abs unit was also unplugged. It seems that this was most likely done when both driveshafts had been replaced as some wally has refitted non abs shafts. So I've got a few bits to source before the systems up and running again.

Amazingly its been easier cleaning the underside of this than it was my AX which had less than 1/3 of the mileage. I've used an old toothbrush, some baby wipes, autosmart Tardis on the stubborn bits and the less aggressive auto Glym intensive tar remover on the easier bits.
Seems to do the job quite well.

A little more progress made, this was my aim to get up to scratch today

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v260/Willsy86/S1%20106%20XSi/null_zpsf1d01aee.jpg

Started by removing the arch liner, old discs and pads.
Typically the disc retaining screws were buggered, one sheared off immediately, the other was already snapped. Set about drilling out the old thread and successfully retapped the original thread without causing any damage. Also ran taps through all the other threads simply to clean them out, most of which had an ingress of muck and dirt. So they're all in perfect order.
Then the arch got a good clean with the tar remover. Cleaned and de-tar'd the arch liner and gave that a good coat of trim detailer.

Result so far, this will suffice for the time being, at some point ill remove the entire front suspension, bits will be powder coated and new components fitted. Just waiting for some new disc retaining screws to arrive now

You know this autosmart tardis stuff you use? Is it much the same as G101?

Autosmart G101 says its a general all rounder and seems more interior based.

The Tardis is a more specific tar remover and degreaser

http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/acatalog/autosmart-tardis-cat6.html

Although its £21 here you've got to remember that you're getting 5 litres, that'll last ages and will easily see you through the whole underside of a car

In terms of progress on this there is alot in progress which will warrant some picture updates shortly.

Ive finished cleaning the seats and trip panels in the interior. I'm trying to find someone that can give the carpet a professional clean as everything else smells fresh now except that which is annoying me.

I now have a full set of brand new Genuine lights, front lamps, indicators, side repeaters, rear clusters and number plate lights and driving lamps. New ones make a massive improvement. Ill fit them all once the bodywork is tidied up as I'd like to get a couple of bits painted and the rest machine polished so Ill fit the new lamps once that's all done.

New front discs and pads are fitted

I've ordered new driveshafts, driveshaft seals, abs sensors and new sensor related brackets/bolts/covers so once that's arrived hopefully ill have fully functioning abs again. Then ill get it MOT'd as that expired on 10th Nov.

I've replaced quite a few other bits for new items which ill list as I fit them. I have been very busy even if the progress thread doesn't reflect it yet

The beauty of eBay at the moment is that there seems to be alot of dealerships selling off old stock for a fraction of the price. If I'd got them direct from a local Pug dealership i dare say I'd have ended up paying at least 3x as much.

Picking up all my new abs stuff tomorrow so once that's fitted ill take it for an MoT

All my parts have now been obtained to get the abs system back up and running (hopefully)

At some point I'm guessing that the old sensors died so rather than replace them (pre new MOT reg changes this year) a garage/previous owner has just removed the sensors and brackets and left it at that.

Along with that its had replacement driveshafts in its history and annoyingly in the absence of any ABS sensors some non abs cheap ones had been fitted and the intermediate bearing carrier had also been removed.

So a full round of brand new parts to fit, bolts & all

Shouldn't be anything else for MOT, maybe tighten handbrake a little as its on 5 clicks at the mo.
Only thing I havnt checked or tested yet is the horn and washers.

Tyres are all good, bulbs all work, wipers are new, rear beam seems sound and there's no rust that'll cause a problem. There's a small bit to sort on the inner wing on O/S but its only surface that ill get sorted post MOT.

Front brakes are new. Brake lines don't appear to have any corrosion and the 4 hoses are in good order. I think I've covered everything.

It's ridiculous how many hours can be spent messing about cleaning stuff up and replacing bits.

I thought I was bad with cleaning up my car! I much prefer doing subtle stuff like this, re-painting bits, replacing bits here and there as a pose to huge induction kits and getting the car 'slammed'.

Too late mate, the XSi is now listed for sale.

That would have been too lucky to find a Goodwood. It's a Phase 1 GTi.

Like we've already found out in the newbie section, your post count won't increase by posting in this section either.

Good luck with the sale, I thought you'd be asking more for the xsi tbh considering its condition. Try it on ebay I can see it making £1k easy. I'd have seriously considered buying this if I hadn't got my gti a few weeks ago.

theres being "not in bad nick" and then theres being like how this guy prepares his cars. Its worth £1000 without and MOT all day long and being bog standard and clean is one of the reasons why

Couldn't agree more there.

Cheers guys, the things I do do to my cars I do enjoy doing to the highest standard possible. I've made a good start on the XSi, for someone to continue the project I'm sure it'll make them a really good car & hopefully be a bit of an investment, prices should rise for these models in original form.

Had some interest so far but nothing concrete yet

Any updates on this Craigy?

Bit of a late reply but the simple answer is yes and no.

So far I've fitted the new rad pipe and wishbones, and sent the mirror caps off for paint.

Need to whip off the bumper, tailgate and doors at my mate's bodyshop when I get a spare day and they are all being re-painted where needed.

Probably just blend the door tops, rather than paint the entire doors as apart from the lacquer peel they are pretty mint.

Compression test brought back some interesting figures so may whip the engine out at some point for a mild re-build.

Still got less than 90k on the clocks though, so still hoping the interest and cost of these will increase soon.

Glad you're still finding some time to give it some attention though mate, saw on FB before Christmas that you were considering moving it on. You've not used it much then if the mileage is still under 90k, surely they'll start appreciating a bit soon, can't remember the last one that came up for sale. 20 years old next year too, should be able to qualify for most modern classic policies :-)

Yeah, was thinking about chopping all the cars in but think I'll keep hold for now. At least until it is almost immaculate.

Qualifies for modern classic now. Costs me £144 a year to insure *smugface*
