So, I had a VTS. It was Blue, it was fun, I put "some bits" on it, I took it apart, put it back together again, and generally had fun in it. Being a last of the line-ish 2003 car, it's obviously completely rotten, so basically, I'm breaking it for any decent parts and scrapping what's left of the comically cheesy shell.

I set out to find ideally, a non-sunroof tidy early 106 shell, as I figured this would be a good base if I wanted to start a proper project. Which brings us to the car. As always, one popped up when I wasn't actually looking, so back in August, I picked this up:

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/Betty.jpg

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/Betty2.jpg

It's a 1994 106 'XN', which appears to be french for "extra poverty specification". The amount of features it doesn't have is frankly staggering. It doesn't even have intermittent wipers, they're either on, or off.

What it does have going for it, is a lack of sunroof, and the correct number of doors. Being devoid of anything even remotely entertaining or useful, it's also supposed to weigh 790kg apparently, which is nice. I'm sure I can add to that. It's also somehow only done 49,000 miles, has all the old MOT's and thus a nice clean shell.

So, I've ran around in it for a couple of months here and there, and yesterday I SORN'ed it to start 'fiddling' over christmas.

The end goal, is going to be a sort of 'fast road' type of affair I guess. I'm wanting a car that I can drive to a track, enjoy on track, and drive home. I really fancy some european tracks and road trips though, so I'll be trying to retain some level of comfort. Having done a good few trips out in MuZiZZle's VTS now, I don't fancy a euro trip in fixed back buckets and no dashboard.

I've been accumulating "stuff", and off the top of my head I've got a handy 16v engine that was fairly well refreshed 5K ago by my fine self, an S2 Rallye Gearbox, a set of Bilstein B8's, a 4-1 manifold, a 2" pugsport, 23mm torsion bars, polybushes, VTS wiring looms, various braces, VTS airbox and all the sets of brakes apart from the ones I think I want now?

I've got a 283mm setup, and Brembo's. I was going to use the Brembo's but I think now I've decided to go with 14" S2 Rallye Steel wheels, which shoots that plan down in flames as they won't go over the brakes. So I'll likely sell them and go for a decent 266mm setup.

So there we go, probably more pics over the next month, picking up over xmas when I have some time off. Progress wise I'm hoping to get the wiring sorted and the engine and box in over xmas, I'd be really happy if it was rolling and running by early January, but we'll see I guess.

I need to make a beam, argh.

Last 2 dull pics for now, squeaky clean boot floor:

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/Floor1.jpg

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/Floor2.jpg

Yeahhhh buddy. There's a tiny little hole in one of the front inner wings I've found which I'll attend to over xmas, and I'm toying with the idea of stitch welding the engine bay.

That's enough waffling for now I think, so cheers for reading!

I think it's basically not been used tbh dude, it had 49k on it when I got it, and according to the MOT's it had done 10k since the previous MOT, works out about 2,300 miles a year on average before that! Mad.

got a single plug ECU mapped to go with them!

seats, erm, pair of tatty cobra monaco's out the rallye, a sebring pro and a sebring S and some fixed back recaro's, i'm not sure on any of them so theyre all up for grabs

if your after a 266 caliper setup i think this is whats on the rallye

Interesting.

££ for the 266's? Iirc the monaco's are blue so I'll leave those ta, just had a look through your thread and the sebrings have wingback tabs so I wouldn't be able to go on the ring as they've banned them now :(

What are the Recaro's like, any pics?

Thanks Matt, been keeping an eye on your build on here and PH, nice engine plans :)

It's under 800kg at the moment, according to the handbook, but by the time I've fitted the heavier VTS engine, and then added bigger wider wheels, larger brakes, front ARB etc, it's all going to mount up so I'll have to look at what I can do with regards to weight reduction to get it back down.

Muz's VTS is around the 820kg mark with fuel in it, and that's very basic inside, so if I can get near 850 as a final figure with some interior, I'll be happy, who knows!

I see anything under 1 ton a bonus, I've gone a bit mad with the bhp per ton lark!!

Hoping to see some 2014 spring/summer track time??

D4MJT
4th December 2013, 15:38
I dunno yet really, definitely summer. The plan is to get over to europe towards the back end of the summer, if I can get a day or so in at Knockhill before then, that would be good.

I think I might keep it SORN'd until I've got it how I want it, I've technically got enough parts as far as I'm aware to get it converted and running over xmas, but I haven't really finalised the spec yet, and I don't "need" it on the road so I think keeping it off will be plan.

Saves it getting filthy off the winter roads anyway!

Started off breaking the VTS this weekend. I didn't get many pictures as I just cracked on with it, and I was using my iPhone for tunes so it was a pain to unplug it lol.

Step 1, grab a handy VTS and assemble required tools, in this case some Fosters, a lumphammer and an axe.

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/Step1.jpg

Step 2, hit a bit until things fall off:

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/Step2.jpg

Step 3, keep hitting it until the engine has fallen out and put itself neatly against the wall

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/J4.jpg

I also gave the new daily a wash off, regrease and wax since it's being pressed back into daily service. Ah well, it'll work some of the beer off...

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/Boardman.jpg

Also, I'm on a begging mission.

Does anyone have a buggered loom kicking about, or even part of one. I need this plug for a coil pack, with about 5cm of wire coming out of it. One of mine has pulled out the plug, and I don't really want to change the loom as I'm bollox with electrics, and it's something else to go wrong lol.

So, this is the plug I'm after:

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/Plug1.jpg

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/Plug2.jpg

Next job is to start pulling the looms out of the VTS I think, and probably labelling things.

Moar details you say? Pics later on man!

I stopped being a bender temporarily and lashed out to do some more last night, didn't get masses done, but it's all progress in the right direction. I've removed the wiring loom pretty much from the engine bay now bar where it enters the bay with the fusebox and that jazz. I'll tackle that later in the week when I pull the dash out.

Also removed now are the wipers, wiper motor, scuttle, engine bay side dashboard nuts, charcoal canister, drivers front wing, the bottom arm bracket strengthening giblets, spherical gear linkage that I've been going to remove for Simon for about 3 years, Group N linkages, washer bottle, horn, etc etc.

Few shonky pics, it's fair to say the old girl needed some attention for another years ticket lol.

Also I may need to revisit my storage strategy somewhat. I appear to have a lot of "car" to store yet before this ones broken, let alone getting the 106 in here, and the current tactic of "pile it in the corner and don't look" isn't really going to work:

By way of a generally poor update, yesterday I took yet more things off the VTS before it gets scrapped, all that remains really is to push it out the garage, put it up on stands and drop the beam, fuel tank and struts off it.

Of course today, it's chucking it down, freezing and the drive looks like a muddy assault course. Awesome! I might lob some pics up later, but tbh all the ones I've taken so far, are of a rusty knackered VTS and wiring giblets.

D4MJT
23rd December 2013, 20:08
So that was more of a fuck on than I was expecting.

Bit of a milestone now, the saxo is properly stripped, and I get to start work on the 106 now. Feels a bit more like progress. To make up for the lack of pictures, here's a current spec list:

- 48k non sunroof 3dr 106 shell
- 1.6 16v TU5J4 lump
- S2 Rallye Gearbox
- MA Satchshift
- 266mm brakes (currently, also have 283's and Brembo's, depends on wheel choice)
- Most likely 14" S2 Rallye steelies
- Bilstein B8 Dampers
- Eibach -35mm springs
- Polybush rear beam
- 23mm Torsion bars
- VTS ARB
- VTS PAS Rack converted to non-PAS
- Yoko AD08's
- VTS Bottom arms
- VTS Fuel tank / lines and return
- Misc 4-1 Manifold
- 2" Pugsport Race System
- VTS Radiator and fan system
- VTS Airbox + cold air feed
- some strippage

Damn you Westwell, damn you all to hell. :p

So, my engine bay is basically that layout above, and as said, none of my mounts work.

Feel free to pop over to my thread in "Problems and Queries" where I'll be asking people who unlike me, know what they're doing, about it. Meh.

Progress over the xmas break has been good and bad.

Bad - I didn't get anything like what I'd intended done.

Good - The shell on the 106 really is in awesome condition, and I've found minimal corrosion while stripping the front end down. It's also REALLY light in comparison to the VTS. The difference just pushing it around the garage is marked. Bizarrely, there's still an abundance of heatshields etc that are still on the car, so I imagine I'll be able to negate the extra weight of the VTS engine by removing more "no longer needed" things.

Also I have no beam yet, or wheels, and I still need some brakes, unless I use Brembo's and 15"s.

Argh.

Haha just weld the cradle from the Vts.

Some reasoning
OEM part on higher spec models
Allows you to use an uprated mount
Might aswell while the engines out
Proper way of doing it
Just better..
I'll have the cradle for mine if you don't use it :P

As above get the cradle off the VTS before its scrapped. Handy to have one already at your disposal, back when I needed to put one on my Saxo it took me ages to find someone willing to remove one and send it to me.

D4MJT
12th January 2014, 18:37
Update time! I've done some more bits.

First off, I drilled the VTS engine mount cradle off the VTS shell. Holy fucking shit, no wonder they don't come up for sale, 19 spot welds to drill out for one poxy little bracket. At least I now have it, so I can use it on the 106 in conjunction with a new VibraTechnics mount.

Today was a sort of 'interior / shell' day. MuZiZZle rocked up like a bawss to help out, and also lent me basically all of his garage giblets, a heatgun, drill, rivetizer, etc etc. He's quite canny for such a tall ugly bastard with a hideous personality.

I'm massively cramped for space, so first of all was a garage organise and push the 106 out into daylight. I'm really pleased with the condition of the shell, I've got access to all the hidden bits now and it's in really good order, with only a few bits needing slight attention. Not bad for 18 years old.

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/106/Bay.jpg

The orangey dirty bits are water coverage, the water pump gave out on the old engine and sprayed water about, so once I've had a chance to clean that off, it's basically rust free. The passenger side inner wing is slightly crusty around some of the loom holes, so I'm going to patch that, and at the same time the drivers side as I'm going to relocate the washer bottle I think.

The passenger side bumper / wing bracket also suffers from some surface rust, if it doesn't clean up well I think I'll fab up some replacements and possibly aerocatch the bumper on.

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/106/BaySide.jpg

With the garage tidied and some order almost restored, it was time to tackle the interior and finish removing the 106 loom. What a job! The dashboard in a 106 ph1 is held in with 13,811 bolts, 5 of which are accessible. When we eventually got it out, the interior went on a diet!

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/106/Bulkhead.jpg

In total we removed 36.1kg of weight from the car today, in the form of:

Headlining - 1.3kg
Underfloor / quarter panel / rear light foam padding - 2.4kg
Behind dash sound deadening foam - 6kg
Rear Seat Backs with bracket - 9kg
A Trims, boot plastics, radio and assorted fixings - 3.2kg
Rear Seatbelts, more nuts and bolts - 3.6kg
Rear Shelf - 2.2kg
Standard Exhaust replaced with PugSport Decat - 2.7kg saved
Rear doorcards - 1.9kg
Carbon Canister Setup - 0.8kg
Tar from floorpan - 3.0kg

The headlining was a nightmare! Peugeot apparently use "supermegahyperbond" to stick it to the roof skin, and I thought we were going to pull the roof in on itself trying to remove it!

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/106/Roofskin.jpg

With the interior trim out of the way, we set to work with the heatgun and scraper removing the tar padding / sound deadening from the floorpan

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/106/Heatgun.jpg

After getting the majority of the tar out with the heatgun, we set at the remaining bits with tardis. In hindsight we should have pushed it back out the garage from some fresh air, -5 years for toxic fumezzzz.

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/106/Tardis.jpg

Tardis is amazing like, literally wipe away the tar!

That left us with a bare shell pretty much!

http://89.234.3.35/Matt/106/Interior.jpg

The next planned attack is to clean up the bay and inner wings, weld in the bracket for the VTS engine mounts, and paint the bay up, then paint the interior. Then it's on to fitting up the VTS loom and starting to get the dash back in, followed by much puzzlement as to why nothing works!

Brendan
12th January 2014, 20:14
I found my dash a real pain to get out! Getting it back in was even worse as the wiring loom mounts to the dash not the firewall. :( Not looking forward to redoing it

I hope to try and get all the sound deadening out of mine but needs to come off the road soon! I'll be following this purely because it's another black S1 :P

Unfortunately that part is true.

I have however successfully welded in a VTS engine mount cradle.

As a downside, I may have experienced a pleasant warming sensation while doing so, which upon removing the welding mask turned out to be my strides, well ablaze.

I'll sort some pics soon, it's got a dash again, and a wiring loom, and a satchshift, and a VTS fuel tank and pump, and VTS fuel and return lines.

D4MJT

Sexy update-o-rama time.

I've done some things, but I need to do more things. Swings and roundabouts innit.

I welded a VTS engine mount cradle into the 106 successfully, at some point during this weld-fest a rogue spark nestled itself in the crotch of my jeans and set fire to my gentlemen vegetables. Both were reasonably successful. I've primed and painted it, and it even looks like it's meant to be there.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/Pug/VTSCradle_zpsc07c3852.jpg

Pretty good like, I'm shit so I was fairly impressed with myself, even moreso when I'd extinguished my flaming testicles. I've also lashed in the satchshift unit and added the comically titled strengthening braces for the bottom arm mounts, which are made from high tensile tin foil.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/Pug/Satchshift_zps8389d57f.jpg

Also I binned the 106 steering column off, and the brake servo and pedal box:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/Pug/Bulkhead_zps17783882.jpg

These have been replaced with a VTS clutch cable and brake pedal setup, a yet to be decided M/C, a VTS throttle cable and a dash of hope. I made a quick list of important things keeping the car from being roadworthy, namely a rear beam, some brakes, those sort of niceties, and then bought some sweet seats instead. It's my aim to give this hammer on track, but also drive it there happily, and have a b-road blaster sort of element, it's not aiming to be an all out no-compromise track machine.

So, some monies later:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/Pug/RecaroSeatsDelivered_zps53682f55.jpg

I also ordered some low-height subframey goodness from JPR Developments. These obviously didn't fit the broad seat base of the Recaro, so they went back and I bought normal height subframey goodness from JPR Developments. I pondered fitting them, and remembered that the wife is 3ft 2, so a slider would be needed. During a rare moment of genius I promptly ordered an OMP slider for my Recaro seats from JJC Race and Rally. For some unexplained reason it didn't fit, so I sent that back as well and then ordered a Recaro slider for my Recaro Seats.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/Pug/OMP_zps236a826e.jpg

Finally I grabbed some harnesses off Blackie_2k5. They're still being de-contamined for the bad aids, but they should be sweet.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/Pug/Sabelt_zpsc329ba95.jpg

Feeling chuffed, I started to entertain thoughts of fitting them to the car, rather than sitting in them in the spare room making 'brmm' noises. I remembered at this point I'd sort of taken everything out of the car a bit, which spoiled my fun, so a pause was in order while I re-loomed the interior of the car, fitted the VTS ignition switch, barrel, refitted the heater matrix, fuel lines, fuseboxes, and then the dashboard, shroud, interior satchshift bits and VTS dials. Pow maddaf***er:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/Pug/DashboardIn_zps833ff730.jpg

Now I could pop the seats in, so I did that yesterday, they look alright, and they're super comfy. The driving position is pretty nice for me, and it's starting to feel like it's almost coming together a bit.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/Pug/SeatsFromRear_zps35eff82a.jpg

Other progress is the VTS fuel tank and pump in there, I need to connect the filter up tonight and then that's sorted and good to go, at which point I can properly turn my attention to sorting out brakes and suspension, and then get the drivetrain back in it.

I'll sort out a "To-Do" list shortly I think, give me some sort of strategic plan type affair. Pffffffft.

I'm having a bit of a mare tbh.

14" track rubber is a LOT cheaper.

That said, I don't have a decent set of 14's, or track rubber.

I do have a set of 15"s, and a set of Brembo's.

I honestly can't work out where to go. I've bought a set of 266 calipers, and I'm tempted to go that way, with 14" rubber and then even possibly Pug OEM wheel trims, but it's also tempting to go 15" and Brembo. Argh.

Dan-Subtle

Stick with the 266's and then get oem steel wheels with some hubcaps, got to be done for shits and giggles for when you pass something alot more expensive on track.

Alternatively could go 15 inch and put on some c5 lightweight steels.

Sell the VTS wheels and brembos, buy some 14'' steels and some decent rubber and should leave you enough for some beers and a kebab.

Work is slowly progressing. Fuck knows if the pics will work, if they don't I'll photobucket em tomorrow, you're not missing anything anyway!

I've bought a new beam from IM Axles, 24mm ARB, 23mm torsionz, -30mm ish, so I have that to lash on with powerflex poly bushes and Bilstein B8's.

Tonight I dropped the fuel tank again, and binned the 3 stud rear beam off, so the bottom of the car is ready to underseal before I refit the new IM beam and fuel tank. Happy days. Hopefully I'll get that done this week.

I'd say B8s aren't really beefy enough for 23mm bars - 21mm max really. They may get you away for a while, but I'd look into swapping them for some blue capped Group N rears, or even better, the black capped ones.

If you have those, then they should be up to the job! As a rough guide, the Group N rears will appear massively beefy compared to a standard damper. From memory, the B8s are a similar in size to standard.

Part number on the sticker will confirm too. :y:

EDIT: Group N (http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m272/drqrty/08012009782.jpg) vs B8 (http://i718.photobucket.com/albums/ww190/chris_furio/loweringandforsalepics020.jpg). The rears are noticeably thicker in the flesh.

Beamz-U-Like Update.

I've finally done something, yay. On Sunday MuZiZZle lashed up in his eco weapon and we set about drinking tea and poking the 106 a bit.

I've cleaned up the road grime off the underneath of the boot floor, removed the spare tyre bracket, and then red oxided the jeezy out of it, and applied some hammerites. Should keep it nice for a few years to come, especially with it's current mileage.

Being generally dorty and managing to get more paint on myself than the car, I didn't get many pics, but here we are rolling on 4 studs:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/Pug/4Studded_zps0d37961f.jpg~original

Sadly, that's the first problem. It's nothing like -30mm. More like -70/80mm I'd think. The tyres are sat right up in the arches and there's currently no fuel tank fitted, exhaust, bumper, lights etc, so it'll drop further yet.

Pow:

I've rang and spoken to Martin at IM this morning. Basically the issue is that I supplied my own beam and 23mm torsion bars, and he has no way of knowing what spring rate they equate to, but clearly it's not the same as their own bars they supply. He's kindly offered to adjust the ride height for free if I return the beam, but also as he points out, he has no real way of establishing what the bars spring rate is equivalent to, so without the car, he won't be able to guarantee it'll be right again.

With this in mind, I think the best course of action is for me to adjust it myself on the car, that way it'll be bang on what I want. So that's a job for next weekend.

In the meantime, I'm currently perplexed at wheel choices. I have VTS wheels with 45 profiles, VTS wheels with 50 profiles, and 14" S2 rallye steels with 55 profiles on.

The Rallye steels appear to sit prouder than the VTS rims for some reason, and I thought they'd sit inside the arches more than the VTS rims. FML.

So, it's on 4 stud, but it's the wrong height and I have no idea what wheels I'll be using.

I'm hoping it should come apart easy like. Top service from IM like either way, he was happy to adjust it for free, or talk me through it, and he was also happy to use his courier for cheap rates if I shipped it back to them to adjust.

are they all 195 wide? It's the same issue running 15's on a flat arch AX. You can pull the arches out a bit, run narrower tyres (stretch yo!) Or buy wheels with the ET for fords and run the right size spacers to sit them in the right place

God knows, you are pretty shit like :homme:

Right bitches, I've done some things. Granted not masses, but real life / sexting muz keeps getting in the way.

The underside of the car from the rear of the boot floor to the back of the front seats has now been ground back of any surface rust where necessary, and then coated in one coat of red oxide and then 2 coats of black gloss hammerite, like a bawss. It's black.

I've also sorted out my ride height finally, it's almost stock height, and stiff as a badger thanks to the bars / ARB etc. It's sat on 195/50/15's currently on the back, on VTS rims. I'm probably going to use these on the road and then lash the 14" steels on for track duties.

Cosmetically it looks shit, it appears to be covered in red overspray from when I painted a mates grille, and a years worth of dust. Yay. It's actually cleaner underneath haha.

I've had the beam off again to paint under it properly, as well as the fuel tank obvs. That's all sorted, and now the beam is back on and torqued up to 85nm in at least 3 places, and the VTS fuel tank is installed, the lines are connected, filler neck is installed, and the pump is wired up. Happy days.

Basically, bar the small matter of zero brakes, the back is essentially finished mechanically. Oh, I need to fit new rear wheel bearings, meh.

I'm intending to get it out tonight, maybe turn it round, sit in it and make some brmm noises, so I'll get a few pics of the new improved ride height, it pissed it down yesterday so I didn't bother.

I sort of need to have a look at the front and maybe put the engine in? A mate came over the other night and helped me fit the Rallye gearbox to the engine, so that's done at least. Bar being fucking hacky, the engine's basically ready to drop back in. Yeaaaaahhhhhhhhh.

Haha, I figure there's no point polishing a turd, if I can get another set of steelies I'll run them on the road as well, I've found that early ph1 306's came with a 14" version of the 13" 106 escapade wheel trim, so I might get a set of those if I can and rock them with semi slicks, lolzz.

I'll grab some pics tonight, see how we get on.

Westwell, it's a full VTS interior loom conversion, I figured it would be easier to rewire the entire car seen as electricals are basically magic.

First off, I pushed it out the garage and admired my gangsta ride height

Mostly, I love the ride height, it's almost standard looking, but it's stiff as a badger

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/RideHeight_zpscda6c75c.jpg~original

I've got the underneath cleaned up and sorted, just need to hook up the brakes, and fit them. Fuel tank is fitted, lines are connected and it's wired up.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/BootFloor2_zps08891964.jpg~original

Then basically, I pushed it back into the garage, the other way round, and decided it was a good point to stick the engine back in. It's gone in like a glove, albeit a tight fitting one.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/HardAtWork_zps543bfcd8.jpg~original

I roped in a mate and my Clio Williams wielding neighbour, and we dropped the engine back in, from the top for a change.

Where was I? Ah, the satchshift was buggered. It was installed, and looked bawss, but didn't do much in the way of engaging gears which was sort of annoying. I poked it a bit, then harassed Blackie on facey for a few hours. The problem essentially, was that even when it was back in say 4th, pulled towards you, the pivot point of the stick was too far forward in the hole down through the transmission tunnel for you to have enough forward throw to get 1st, 3rd or 5th.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/SatchForward_zpsb433f7ea.jpg~original

That was in 4th gear.

A new day and a fresh pair of eyes showed that I was indeed, as expected, a retard, and I'd bolted the lower part of the Satchshift bulkhead gubbins "in front" of the bottom arm brace bars, rather than "behind it".

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/SatchWrong_zpsbe91abf1.jpg~original

This meant that the whole thing was pulled forward by a quarter of an inch and didn't work. Once resolved, it took a couple of minutes to set it up and get all the gear selecting nicely.

With a nice bit of weather, it seemed like a good time to pull it outside and attempt to solve the starting problem.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/B3ND3R_zpse35245eb.jpg~original

Basically, there was 2 earths I'd forgotten to connect, and once these were connected, the alarm unplugged, and the coil pack connected, it spluttered into life, making generally apoclyptic squealing noises. After I'd quickly turned it off and changed into some new shorts, it became apparent that the alternator had well and truly seized up over the last 5 months, so I whipped the belt off and that solved the problem for the short term.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/MuzCock_zps066e4e78.jpg~original

Next I turned my attention to fitting the exhaust to appease the neighbours, and some sort of cooling system so it didn't melt. The coolant system proved to be a pain, as while I had all the hoses, I also had this:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/ClipMissing_zps0d75a61b.jpg~original

5 months ago, I put the retaining clip in such a safe place, I doubt I'll ever find it again. A local chap came to the rescue and hooked me up with a spare he had, what a hero. I say local, I live in a field so it was still a 35 mile round trip.

Now that I had coolant, I addresses the lack of exhaust. It turns out the Pugsport system is a very snug fit with a satchshift, so I decided to heatwrap the front part so that if it does knock slightly under harsh engine movement it should damp the noise slightly.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/PugSport_zpsf985e312.jpg~original

This fitted, I popped the back box on for a trial:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/XN_zpsb3e07a57.jpg~original

Looks more awesome than it is, as my Pugsport doesn't have S1 shell hangers, FML. Every step of the way something goes tits up man. See what I mean here:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/Hanger_zps75c3c572.jpg~original

It's simple to sort, I'll just clean the paint off, whip that hanger off and weld it into the correct place, happy days all round. The other 2 hangers and poly bushes are keeping it in place fine for now.

As a quick easy job, I fitted my remote central locking units and looms to the doors, and whipped the extra un-needed bits off while I was on, weight savingzzz.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/TrackCards_zpsfe164619.jpg~original

Just call me minimal gainzzzz.

Now I needed an Alternator, Deano kindly donated a spare, and refused to take any cash, so I lashed him a crate of beerzzz, and fondled his awesome dawg:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/Minnie_zps1431f81e.jpg~original

The rest of the weekend slowed considerably as we had the wifes nephew to stay, but I pressed him into child labour and decided to blitz the garage and clean it up. I also lashed down some carpet I had spare, so now all the oily bits are pretty much done I can tinker on in a bit more comfort:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/Garage_zps25269a65.jpg~original

Along with the garage speakers and beer fridge it's a happy place to be now.

I refitted the bonnet and front wings for the first time in 5 months as well, looks almost car ish:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/BonnetOn_zps5146b759.jpg~original

THe ride height is pretty much bang on where I wanted it tbh, the rear sits about 20mm higher than the front, so the car sort of 'points nose down'. The wider track VTS disc beam fills the arches nicely width wise, and the front are sat right out in the arches also:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/ArchGap_zps0ca7dcc2.jpg~original

The bottom arms are almost exactly level as well, which is spot on:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/BottomArms_zpsd85dcb69.jpg~original

I've tidied up the bay a bit wiring wise, and fitted the ECU cover and VTS fusebox etc

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/VTSBay_zps58923b01.jpg~original

The DVLA also sent me back my new logbook with the plate assigned finally, huzzah:

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/D4MJT_zps45aa0dba.jpg~original

And I'm being reet organised, so I've popped a white board up in the garage, complete with 'Anti-Death 106 List'.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/106VTS/AntiDeathList_zpsa91b2567.jpg~original

Just the wiring issue to sort out, and the other 20 odd bits on the list, and it's road ready! Ish...

Cheers hew, that is sort of the point x

I tell you what though, it's fucking light, and it's fucking stiff!

Last week before I dropped it off axle stands and pulled it out the garage, I was trying to find a set of wheel nuts to pop the front wheels on. It was up on 2 axle stands on the bottom arm mounts which I thought were level, they were pretty damn close if they weren't.

Went to take a wheel brace to the rear passengers wheel and nearly hit myself in the face with it as the wheel span right round, it was off the deck and had been on 1 wheel and 2 axle stands lolzz.

Also I can pick the back of it up, which could be worrying, as I don't want it super light at the back, so I'll look into relocating the battery to the passengers side of the boot along with the washer bottle when it's on the road.

Righty, I'm sort of on a bit of a roll with this at the moment, which is nice.

So last time I updated it was basically a rolling 4 stud shell with the engine and the gearbox physically in place and I'd started on the wiring.

As it stands currently, it's pretty much a runner. I've got a few bits to sort yet which I'll run through but it's not far off shakedown time. It's MOT'd, taxed and insured so it's road legal as soon as I'm happy with it really. The mods are all declared, and I've attempted to declare the engine swap with the DVLA, but I need to get it running first, and take it to an independent garage to get a letter on headed paper confirming the new engine number and my chassis number to send them, so that's the last bit of the puzzle there to sort when it's rolling.

Got my plate assigned to it and the new tax disc, MOT and log book through for that, so that's sorted at least.

On Friday night I set to on fitting the new rear brake setup and bleeding the brakes up. Finished at 1am, but the pedal feels great. Rear setup consists of new rear calipers, pad fitting kit, discs and pads, braided lines and new handbrake cables. All new really, so it should all work nicely. The front brake setup is Bosch 54 266mm's to sit under 14" rallye steels should I choose.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/RearBrakes_zps4b9d9ac0.jpg~original

With that, on Saturday I triumphantly drove it out of the garage under it's own power for the first time in 7 months. Good times! I drove it about 100 yards down the back lane and back to see if there was any glaring problems with brakes etc, and then parked it in front of the house to do a garage tidy.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/Garage_zps694bdad9.jpg~original

I've fitted the new alternator I got from Dean, and popped the aux belt back on and tensioned it.

New problem however. Although the car started and ran fine, when you popped the lights on with the keys in your pocket, it set the ignition live and primed the fuel pump. Impressive in itself now I think about it because it was somehow bypassing the immobiliser. Anyway, thanks to some problem solving from some of you fine chaps on here, and Beaniemoo, who were really really awesome, I traced it back to a short in the rear drivers side light wiring.

With that resolved, it was time to put it back in the garage for some more finishing touches. Sadly, this was when the next issue struck. It cut out while reversing, and refused to start. Annoyed didn't cover it, 7 months and it had driven under it's own power, and now it was dead as a donut with a merrily flashing immobiliser light.

After doing basically nothing but trying to start it, 30 minutes later it sprang into life. I'd been reading up on unlocking the ECU by unplugging the immobiliser, so I reached over to unplug it, and literally as my hand touched the box it cut out dead again. It refused to start for the rest of Saturday.

Sunday morning it was the same story, I called it names, trawled forums, checked the wiring, everything seemed fine. It basically pointed to either the ECU locking itself, the transponder pickup being fucked again, or some short somewhere. I went to check the dials for warning lights, and as I put the keys in, the fuel pump primed. It fired up immediately, and I whipped the immobiliser box off as fast as I could. It's started every time since on the key.

There are 2 possible causes from what I can see. I think the immobiliser was potentially on it's way out. Perhaps the wiring short to the lights hadn't done it any favours, I don't know, but it's not missed a beat since I ditched it.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/Immobiliser_zps72112356.jpg~original

I also moved and cleaned the 2 gearbox earths and wire brushed the one behind the battery tray for good measure, again. I doubt this did anything as I've checked the earths so much recently, but it's running, so I'm happy.

The rest of Sunday I spent splicing the VTS loom into 106 rear light plugs, and splicing the front lights and side repeaters. The car now starts on the key, and I've got no nasty warning lights on the dash, happy days indeed. The central locking and alarm work correctly as well now too.

I've got a list of about 21 important things that need sorted before I can really drive it on the road, but it's nearly nearly there now.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/AntiDeath_zpsf02b6264.jpg~original

I've removed another 3.5kg of interior tat today as well, it feels very light, I'm looking forward to getting it weighed and seeing what it actually comes in at. I'd be really happy with 830kg or under tbh, the original car is 810 according to the handbook I have for it, and I've stripped a good chunk out, but I've also obviously added weight with the heavier engine, chunkier beam, larger wheels etc etc.

It's many lightz: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-MtOcpRwtc&feature=youtu.be

I'll likely fit a front ARB at some point, however there's no huge point as I simply want to get some shakedown miles on the car driving steady and see what niggles crop up that will inevitably need sorting.

Plans for the front suspension setup will be custom faulkner springs, gaz adjustables, solid top mounts, top mount strengthening plates. I'll be replacing the rear Bilsteins with Gaz adjustables also.

I have a set of diesel bottom arms I've been building up with new ball joints, poly bushes and Vibra Technic rear mounts, so these will be fitted then as well, and likely a colin satchell lower brace.

I'm taking it easy to listen for anything coming off I've missed lol, so I almost hit the dizzy heights of 70 this morning, but it feels good. I hate that first drive. I try to never go too far in case a wheel falls off or something.

Basically exactly what I was thinking.

I've made a thread because it was bogging down and running like crap under throttle.

Then I drove it some more, it seemed to clear, the exhaust started popping, I gave it death in 2nd to the limiter, changed, the exhaust bang made me duck, some smoke came out, then it went like fuck in 3rd.

It might be fixed :y:

Right, it's now officially moved from the "will anything catch fire / does it work" phase into the "sweet tits, this is fun, let's sort the niggles out"

It's very good fun, the steering particularly feels perfect to me. I've fitted the S1 rack in place of the VTS PAS > Non Pas converted rack, and it's spot on. It's nice to drive, turn in is great, and it's light enough to not even notice the lack of PAS with the extra weight of the VTS lump hanging over the front.

I've got one remaining wiring problem which is just some bother with a rear indicator, but bar that we're laughing.

It's good!

I'm not running a front ARB at the minute and the turn in is noticeably better, I think I might beef up the front springs but permanently ditch the front ARB.

I've commuted in it all week, with partial success.

Casualties for the run in period are, 1 driveshaft, a gearbox mount, the exhaust fell off a bit, and I've had an earthing problem which has resulted in a few non-starts, hoping to rectify that today.

All in all, it goes well enough when it's working! I've got some minor bits to sort tonight, like it probably needs a handbrake and that, but I'll grab some pics, I might lash the steels on for a look as well.

Righty, it's been on the road for 7 days, and I've used a tank of fuel. It's not technically broken down anywhere, but as expected, some niggles to sort out which I'm working through.

1) - Negative Battery lead was goosed. A replacement was sourced and fitted, all is now nice and earthy.

2) - Idle Control Valve chose to shit itself while I was attempting to diagnose the battery cable issue, which led to some confusion. I've cleaned it which made a difference, then basically hammered it a bit and unplugged it so the car idles at roughly 1100rpm. A new one has arrived on my desk this morning.

3) - Rear shock bolts work best when they're tightened up. Not tightening them up makes the back sound like it's falling off, which is sort of is. N00b eRr0rzzz

4) - I've killed a driveshaft with my gentle run in technique, POWERRRRRRR

5) - I sort of snapped a gearbox mount, this has also been replaced.

I snapped some pics last night, it's looks pretty sweet. It looks lower at the front than it is due to how it's parked on the grass I suspect. I'm toying with the idea of lowering the rear slightly at the weekend, we'll see. I don't want it to "look" lowered, so it needs to be in proportion. The rear is stiff and handles well, and if it's much lower I won't be able to run 195 tyres if I choose, without arch work, which I don't want to do. I'm going to test fit the steelies this weekend, and I'm on the hunt for some 14" period Peugeot trims.

Going forwards, the immediate list is roughly:

1) - Sort the rear indicators which may not work correctly
2) - Fit Rallye Steels / Possibru lower moar
3) - Wash it and get rid of the 106.1 ROCK RADIO stickers, fml
4) - Sort out some sort of cunning cooling fan solution
5) - Adjust the Satchshift so that you don't need to throw a six for Reverse
6) - Replace Driveshafts
7) - Adjust handbrake
8) - Get some sort of sexy wheel
9) - Sort some braceage
10 - Rear Passenger wheel bearing
11 - MOT, urgh.

My rallye steelies are "vintage" already, by which I mean black, and a bit rusty. They should work nicely, I'm tempted to leave them as is and not refurbish them, especially if I'm finding a set of trims for them anyway, rather spend the money on tyres.

The roof, I assume you mean interior, is going to be a challenge. I've no idea what adhesive they used to bond the non-sunroof roof skins in, but it's unreal. Autosmart Tardis isn't even touching it.

I doubt it, but I would do in a flash. I used a 106 derv weapon to commute years ago and it was bulletproof and ran on air.

I washed it yesterday, I'll pop some pics up in a bit, I've had to refit the VTS wheels temporarily as the rallye tyres are badly cracked all over the shop after some use. They'll mostly be needing some AO48's on them.

haha, not much like, ironically, now I've lowered it a bit, I've had to refit the VTS wheels and they rub slightly on the rear under cornering / load.

It does handle much better on the wider section tyres like, but then again the rallye wheels are old shitty rubber, so that's no suprise.

It's really running pretty well now, I'm happy with it, I'm past the "niggles" stage I think and it's enjoyable to take out for a blat.

Righty, some pics.

I've tidied up the interior slightly by refitting the pug badge to the centre of the steering wheel / ships wheel, and also some dash blanks and the heater fan knob, which I hadn't fitted the by time I took this pic, fml.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/Dash2_zpsdc53de2f.jpg~original

I also spent Saturday refitting the VTS rims as the tyres on the Rallye rims are cracked badly, and also dropped the exhaust off to completely readjust the satchshift, which now works great, whereas before getting reverse was tricky to say the least.

Muz donated some aerocatches as the chinese appear to keep sending him them, so I'm going to cut off the bonnet safety latch and fit the OE fan unit, and retain the standard centre latch for the bonnet, and fit the 2 aerocatches as a backup incase it fails.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x297/D4MJT/Aerocatches_zps3d5c0097.jpg~original

Saturday evening I lashed down to Team Fastrape HQ and dropped Muz' fuel tank off the VTS so that his welding badmanz could finish welding his cage in.

I like a large rim?

It's tragic like, I need a moar better one. There's fucking loads to do yet, but it'll do for now.

Due to my hectic lifestyles I honestly can't see me getting it fettled for a track day this year so I think I'll basically aim for next year now.

I want DS2500's at a minimum, now that I've driven it the suspension is completely shit at the front, so I'll be going gaz adjustables and custom faulkner springs, it needs top mount strengthening plates and kam solid top mounts, new bottom arms which I have ready, track rod ends, the list goes on.

However, I have basically done the conversion / hard bit, and after a month or so's use, I've pretty much ironed out all the niggles with it.

I crashed it a bit then stuck it in the garage?

Not properly like, I may have reversed it into a low stone wall while parking and scraped the plastic on the bumper like a bender. I also may or may not have been attempting to reverse park while harnessed in, drinking tea and on the phone.

I'm good like.

Basically I'd say it's at the end of it's "shakedown" phase. I say shakedown, basically I've put the engine in, ironed out all the niggles, still not fitted any decent cooling, and drove the nuts off it till things broke.

It has a whole new list of things it needs now, which I'll update shortly, but I've got quite a lot going on in the real world currently, so realistically I don't expect it to be out again before next year now.

As a starter it needs:

Decent suspension, the Billies are fucked / way too soft as are the springs
Solid top Mounts
Strut top plates
Upper and Lower Braces fitted
Rear Wheel Bearings
Polybushed and VibraTechnic'd bottom arms fitted
Tyres on the steelies
New rear hub
Handbrake cables that fit (not pagid)
Coolz
Aerocatches
Decent pads

After that it should be fairly sorted tbh. FML

On the plus side, it's been a busy year, and it's no longer a shell on axle stands with a dusty engine stacked next to it, it's a running driving converted toy.
