Well I finally found myself a 106 gti!
It's a P reg, only had 2 owners (one owned it from 1997-2010), got high miles at 123k but seems to be ok. 100% standard, apart from the headunit which I changed due to the original having no code.
Here it is before I gave it a quick clean:

Looks like some absolute dickhead wheel-spinned through white paint..

Plans wise, I'm not sure what to do to it. I'd like to keep it all standard really but I'll probably end up doing something to it. So far I need to:
-Sort bodywork out like the white paint
-Get cambelt kit fitted
-Replace windscreen washer motor
-Replace ball joint
-Refurb or replace alloys
And here's a pic of my blaze 306 cabby!! Got a bit of a collection going here...

Keep it standard looking is a good idea but maybe another set of OEM wheels other than the raptors though?
Cant say im a massive fan of the colour but then again a gti in gold looks nicer than a gold saxo VT

Yep I'm thinking about some cyclones or vts alloys, just not sure yet. Could try on the cyclones from the 306 but the tyres are really fat! Also, not too sure how it will sit with 15's on standard suspension.
I was talking to the bloke that does torsion bars just down the road and he said anything more than 35mm could potentially lock up the rear brakes due to the brake compensator thinking there is a car full of people and sending all the braking power to the back? Anyone know anything about this?
And yes the colour isn't to everyones taste - I like it but I've had mixed opinions off other people! I need to take it to someone who can give it a proper wash and get it looking shiny again as I have no idea what I'm doing when washing cars!

Looks pretty nice mate, id say lower it 35mm and anthracite cyclones. Thatd be what id do anyway :D

Cheers! Yeh that's what I'm thinking.....I found this over on 106owners and thought it was pretty smart. Would like to see the alloys in just silver though aswell.

adjust the compensator if you lower the rear so it doesn't lock up, its an easy job but chances are the compensator valve or adjustment screw is probably seized up now with this being a very early car

Lovely looking car mate! I'd love a blaze GTI! It's one of my favourite colours on a 106 :y: Looking forward to seeing what you do to it :D

Ah that's what he meant then. I'll have to think about it, need cambelt and other essentials doing first though :p

Cheers! Will be slow progress I think, going to get it sorted mechanically then decide what I'm going to do to it!

My 106 had exactly the same as this was a bastard to get off, required thinners and a lot of patience.

Ha, yeh I didnt realise how bad it actually was until I cleaned it. Its real thick paint aswell. You can just see its splattered all the arch lining and there's a few bits on the door and rear quarter.
The worst of it is on the arch though so if one comes up for sale I think it might be easier just to swap it over!

Well seen as the 306 is sat doing nothing I thought I'd rob it of its wheels for the GTI! Tyres are super fat 55's but they don't rub too much. Will get some 45's if I decide to leave them on.

The strange bolts which came off the raptors. I've never seen them before lol

Right, after driving it for a week or so Ive got some questions:
- Is it only meant to have 1 fan? As it's got fittings for 2 but there's only 1 there!
- The heaters/blowers only work on full blast, not too much of a prob but would like it sorting.
- I'll be after a 4-2-1 (or 4-1, different thing?) are these all the same for gti/vts/16v or are there different ones for different years?
- I'm after an air filter aswell to free it up a bit, what do people recommend? I'm not looking for the noisiest lol
- Since all the wet weather, it's developed a sort of squeaking belt noise (a bit like aux belt) except it goes away when the clutch is engaged and the pitch of the squeak doesnt really change through the revs. Could it just be the aux belt?
Cheers

Yes, only one fan but space for two. Silly i know.
heaters i have no idea about? Fuse or dodgy wire maybe?
Manifold is all to do with where your oil filter is located, so GTI/VTS etc have them internal, and some have them external (IIRC)
Any air filter is better than nothing. People do advise to drill holes in the bottom of your original airbox and replace the filter with a K&N or something. I just have a samco hose attached to a raceland induction. It's done the job for 4 years now.
Im sure mine was squeeking the other day. It disappeared after drying out, not sure if youre seeing the same problem?
hope this helps mate

Cheers for the reply!
That's ok, as long as I don't have a fan missing!
I've checked the fuses so it can't be that for the heater, I did a bit of research and someone said it could be a resistor? can anyone shed any light on that?
My oil filter is just below the manifold, external
Are the raceland induction kits like this style:
http://106owners.co.uk/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=132868&d=1389821094
They seem to be the popular type. But I have heard of people sticking a K&N in the standard air box but not with drilling holes!
Which set up would be best?

check the tension on the alternator belt, wet/damp weather can.
Sounds like the resistors for the two settings on the heater have gone, not a major problem to fix that though

I'm awaiting on the arrival on my new heater blower unit. Mine did the same, both 1 and 2 not working, i've been told to just replace the whole unit as it's quicker and easier to do, new resistor was £10, a whole new unit was £17.99. Supposedly it's just a bit of a pig to get out without pulling the dash out though

As in the heater matrix? So these resistors must be a bitch to do if removing the dash and replacing the whole unit is easier. Didn't really want to start taking the dash out really!
Just need to do some searching to find out where the resistors are first then go from there.
Thanks for the help so far people
Edit: This thread has some good info jigs, doesn't sound too big a job (http://www.saxperience.com/forum/showthread.php?t=113701)

Sorry, you can remove the unit without removing the dash, it's just supposed to be very difficult to remove it without taking the dash out! Thanks for the link

Got a couple of bits done today, fitted new aerial and base, aero wipers and just been to collect this:

It's complete with green filter. Seller said it was off a 1.0 but I've offered it up to mine and looks like it should fit. They taped up the oil breather hole for some reason.....Anything I should know before fitting it?

they probably taped the oil filter hole because they used a separate breather for it, id make sure the filters clean as i got one like this with a green brand filter an the filter was pretty much black but soon put it back to green with some petrol and some tlc ! make sure its clean or will do more harm then good :)

Well, after investigating the oil leak, it looks like the previous owner changed the head gasket fairly recently but failed to skim the head. So its pissing out oil from the head and getting worse....not too pleased really.
So I'm going to get the head skimmed asap, unless anyone thinks its easier to just buy a second hand head?
Apart from that, and a small bit of rust on the inner wing it's not skipped a beat in the last month!

Heater motor isn't too bad to get out.. I did it on mine.. Easiest way is to take all the bolts off the dash, and pull it out an inch or 2, you won't need steering wheel off or anything.. Then it just takes a lot of laying in the footwell, getting scratched arms, and a lot of wriggling and jiggling to work it out! Patience is they key!

Sounds like a bitch to do ha I bet its getting it back in which is the worst part. But to be honest I'm going to live with it for now and have a go once I get the head sorted.
It's losing oil pretty quickly now so I think I'm going to have to use the 306 for a bit....which means taxing and insuring again! Why is nothing simple :panic:
Also, does anyone have a rough idea of how much I should be paying to get the head skimmed?

i think I paid about £30 all in, bit more for a pressure test too if you want it

Really not too bad.. Under the scuttle, take the wiper motor out.. £ bolts holding the dash in along there.. Take the nuts off.. Take the 2 nuts off the fan motor.. Go inside and give the dash a yank and it'll move about an inch, then the hardest bit is getting the plug off the motor, while it's up behind the dash! can't fit 2 hands in, so it's a case of trying to pull, while pulling the clip part up! Took me an hour and a bit, that was without any advice, just going at it and doing what i could see..

Oh. I was expecting it to be alot more than that! I was thinking I would be forking out hundreds lol. I'll have to get it booked in for it to be taken off and sent off for skimming as its losing oil really fast.
Why the previous owner couldn't have done that when the head was off I do not know.
cheers
