Hello everyone,

This website seems a buzzing little place to be with plenty of threads, posts and knowledge about:y:I thought I would join in by documenting the trials and tribulations of slowly changing a Peugeot 106 1.4 Quiksilver from a road going car into a track based toy. I hope posting about a 106 on a Saxo website is ok-I checked out the 106 website and it doesn't appeal to me for a number of reasons.

As a 29 year old with a MK1 Escort and a brand new Fiesta Zetec S plus being close to buying a house you can imagine everything I buy for the car will be thought about as I don't want to waste money that would be useful elsewhere. I also don't want to get sucked into the common theme of a 30 page build thread that doesn't even get used on track and then finally ends up with the thread title "breaking". Seems a common occurence unfortunately
:n:

So the car itself. I started out by looking for a cheap "sport" based saxo or 106 for a few reasons. The cars themselves seem to be at their cheapest currently(my friends were buying these brand new 11 years ago when I started driving-I had a caged Mk2 Escort if you must ask..) uprated parts seem well catered for and thirdly the cars handle well "out of the box".

What presented itself locally was a tired 2002 Quiksilver with what the vendor believed to be a blown headgasket. For £250 with plenty of MOT and tax, we took a risk thinking logically worst case scenario would be £100 or so on another engine. Luckily once we got it home we discovered the thermostat was stuck shut so £11 later and a good service thrown into the mix she was ready to be pressed into daily service. A few pics as reference really to show where we started out. A few "personalisations" are evident which eventualy I would like to dispose of-The gloss black bumper strips and spoiler to name for a start...

Anyway, before even thinking of doing any upgrades I wanted to get the basics sorted. The front wishbones gained new bushes(polysport for the inners) and balljoints, new droplinks went on, new track rod ends and new brake pads. The rear beam was replaced with a refurbed one from IM Axles. I took the oppurtunity to fit Polysport rear beam bushes when fitting the new beam as well:y: New driveshafts, Apex front springs and dampers and a play around with the torsion bars had the car driving smoothly. I kept the rear slightly higher than the front as well after reading on here that it would be better for handleing.

With enough work carried out to the suspension to get the old girl onto Cadwell Parks tarmac, I next turned my attention to the brakes. Once again after reading up on here it seemed an initial starting point would be a 23mm master cylinder and Bosch 54mm 266mm Brake upgrade. A new 23mm master cylinder was obtained from the local motorfactor and I managed to obtain a pair of good calipers with carriers from the local breakers for £20 which I cleaned up and painted black(sorry I'm not a fan of bright coloured callipers :homme:) Basic motorfactor pads and discs were used as a base reference. As a little sidenote, it's often said that the flexi's are too short for this conversion but I tested this on full droop and compression, along with turning lock to lock and never had any tightness. I think it's most likely to be luck of the draw though with each car rather than a definate yes/no.

I've got to say, this basic upgrade has made a hell of a difference to the car on it's own. The brakes have great modulation and the initial bite is fantastic! Eventually I'm sure I'll probably add braided lines, 5.1 fluid and some uprated pads to the mix but for now the brakes will easily cope for a few track days. :y:

Finally as part of the pre track preparations I thought I would look at lightening the car and adding some safety. The usual route of taking everything out was easy enough but I started to spend wisely when it came to safety. A secondhand safety devices cage was bought and easily fitted after welding in foot plates. This had been ordered with harness bars from the factory so was a welcome upgrade. After previous experiences I really wanted 3" harnesses rather than 2" so decided to keep an eye out for some good secondhand items. Within a few weeks a mint set of Black(again I hate bright colours!) 3" OMP items turned up locally for £90. A bargain that proved cheaper than new similar quality 2" items.

Finally I needed some seats. Basic Quiksilver seats really are poor for holding you in but after forking out for the cage and harnesses in the same month there wasn't much money about for buying some fancy buckets. Years back I had an Escort RS Turbo that I bought some Cobra Monaco's for. I soon sold them on again though as the standard Recaro's actually held you better in corners than the clubman spec Cobra's. So I decided for now to look for some standard CLOTH GTI seats. I manged to pick up a complete cloth interior locally for £20!!!!:panic: A Period Momo wheel completed the initial spec.

So thats a basic upgrade carried out to the interior brakes and suspension. So far the car owes me under a grand which is a great result and shows what can be achieved by waiting for parts to turn up and spending in the right areas. :y:

Yesterday my old boy and myself had our first trackday at our local circuit Cadwell Park. For years I had dreamed of doing this and it was great to finally have the chance. It is so much better than you can ever imagine and I urge anyone thinking of doing it to carry out their thoughts it's cracking :fcuk:

We shared the costs, so it cost about £80 each for track time and fuel. A £30 set of VTR wheels and tyres got abused on the day!

Now that the first session is out of the way it's allowed us to figure out the next upgrades. The car handled fantastically, even on the cheap mismatched tyres once the right pressures were found. I never once thought I was falling out of the seats so the interiors ok. Brakes felt good and pulled up well but towards the afternoon the brakes were juddering under braking so some better quality discs are on the list. Also with the frantic gearchanges you could feel the gearlever rocking suggesting that the rear engine mounts want beefing up. A final point was that there was a slight knocking coming from the wishbone area when under load. I think this is the cheap motorfactor rear wishbone mounts so I may have to bend over and pay for some uprated units.

To Do List:

Look into better quality discs
Look into fitting uprated rear engine mounts
Get shafted for uprated rear wishbone bushes

Looking forward to developing the car and keeping this thread upto date. Hope what I've put is ok :y:

Cheers

Danny

Is there a photo limit per thread? Seems a few of my pics towards the end are not showing :wall:

Hello and welcome :)

First bit of advice :) loose the nob sticker on the back of your car, youll just get bullied on track... Looks like a great little car :)

It wont be long before your asking about gti conversions and short ratio boxes ;)
