its just a low mileage jp4 with solid mounts and a quaiffe vts box as it sits mate, if i keep it ill be doing the conversion to about 250/270bhp or there abouts.

ai the plan was to 16v the vtrT but it needs a few bits and bobs and some welding, this is already caged and has a decent spec so ive made the hard choice to strip the vtr and cut it up :(

the fact its alot lighter is just icing on the cake really :) get more for my money with the power/weight

What work is needing done ?

paint inside and out, general tidy up, new fuel lines, turbo conversion, new seat rails and some welding to where the old ones were... it needs the dash out and some wiring/replacing parts to get it back to being road legal/useable, new mirrors as only as one..etc etc etc lol

new roof skin as not keen on the plated over roof. just getting it to an MOT'able state is gonna be a task as its been a track car for a good few years now and lots of stuff has been removed including the wiring

managed to get the unit tidied up and stripped the saxo, evicted the berlingo and got the 106 in there. :D

made me realise how much i missed having a car..so the following day i text the lad that bought all the 8v stuff and bought it back... it was all still in my unit so was no biggy..save me alot of time and money making a new kit from scratch!

got straight on doing what i could. its not gonna be easy converting the 8v set up to the 16v in an s1 bay. but in a few weeks it should be all go..all going well. but theres fuck loads to do!


got to work stripping and mocking up the kit to see what needs to be done, atm ive made a boo boo with the mani but the new flange is welded on. need to do alot of porting to get the shape of the 16v ex ports..but itll get there with a few hours work. heres some pics of the mocking...had to chop the front panel out..gonna have to do alot of other chopping and welding to get it all to fit lol... the cooler will be going higher and as far into the bumper as poss. Was well chuffed the saxo exhaust fitted straight in no modding.. may need to chop the bumper a touch to get it right but its looking good ATM.

once i get the mani sorted it sould progress REALLY quickly but im limited to what i can do atm until the main bits are bolted in...then ill have to whip the engine out -__-

not as it is now..its gonna be chopped to sit in as far as it can but its gonna be hanging out tbh.. theres gonna be next to no room once the rad is in

gonna lift it up..and try get it so it sits level in the middle of the fog recesses so the boost pipes can fit in the recesses...will tidy it up a touch

i wanted it hidden but not alot i can do really. its so much smaller then a saxo in there haha

EDIT...think when i get it in and tidied if i spray it and the boost pipes black you may not immediately be able to tell. but we'll just have to see

lol! i had an absolute nightmare with that hole man! haha.. there was a bit rust on arch when ash had it so he welded that big plate in, all he had at the time.. but its like 6mm steel plate or something, it totally blunted a new steel cutting hole saw, so had to use a grinder to cut it out and a carbide cutting burr to shape it as best i could but was ripping teeth off the cutting burr lol. look fine once the safety edge is on :P

im starting to like it mind, proof is in the pudding..fuck loads to do before its "mine" but ill get there in the end

cheers mate..still using the 25 yeah, not really chasing mate, itll make what it makes & im cool with that..the saxo was more then enough fun and this has an easy 100kgs over the saxo. id like it to make 250bhp which i dont see it have a problem doing at all

spent most of the day on it today.. got the new eader tank sourced and made a bracket for it and sorted out the piping which ill fit tomorrow. Then moved onto the satchshifter which was an absolute fucking joke to fit... good as they are ill never fit another.

cheers matey... more progress, got most stuff in now, spent all day fitting rad and sorting coolant hoses, painted the slam panel and fitted that, then got the intercooler mounted and set about making the boost pipes up..took a while lol

very happy with how much i got done.. ill need a new bumper and slam but for now theyre ok.

pics as always.. the lacquer on the slam panel bloomed so ive whipped it back off and gave it another coat before i left :)

cheers buddy, hoping to get it mot'd this week, ive roughly fitted the gauges, just a few more bits to pipe up, wire the fans up and sort the washers and a few other bits up, bond the vents into the bonnet and get the new bonnet pins fitted..fit te bonnet and put the seats etc back in i should be able to start the mot prep. hopefully by wed i should have it in for test but we'll see how it goes :)

so atm im gutted/pissed off and the car will NOT be at FCS. :n:

Basically Alan, I was keen to try "nip" it up but even still..its gonna leak so id rather put it to bed now, ive got over the fact its not hitting FCS. Gonna have a week off and ill come back to it then, never been so keen to get a car done haha, happy in a way..rather leave it off the road till its done as id rather drive it than mod it if i get it on the road for FCS.

What's wrong with the composite ones out of interest? Head they were more likely to fail but other than that I don't know the reason. Didn't the vts have them fitted as standard up until 1999 or something? Gather MLS is a better solution but be nice to know why the other ones are crap. Should be more tolerant of imperfections?

Something to do with the cooling system and the way the heat dissipates from the head if I remember right mate, and something to do with the block and head being the way they are.

Theres a thread with the reasonings for it in the engine section, or you could ask john at gmc as it was him that mentioned it in the thread iirc. Something do with a long standing problem

got my replacement head gasket this morning so thanks to john at GMC! only ordered it at dinner time the previous day!

spent about 3 hours cleaning the unit after i ordered it and when i went in this morning it just looked too clean :D needed messing up again.. and so it began...

ai least its all getting done at the same time, no idea what has fucked the bolt, just lots of noise soon as i tried to put it into gear and when ive stripped it one of the bolts is mashed lol, cant see any sign of anything..only thing i can think is something fell into the bell housing but cant see any othe damage anywhere :/

common place for them to leak(front left corner), i had 1x j4 and 1x jp4 new FAI gasket in the unit so i used them, theyre a slightly diff shape on the corners, and where the gaskets GMC supply have the black mastic allover both sides of the gasket...the FAI ones only have a line around all the edges and bolt holes

think because one gasket was slightly diff shape to the other on the corners it was creating pressure on the other and lifting it where they meet..couple that with the poor design of it and hey presto..leakages YO

so just banging 1x1.9 in this time, should be ideal on/off boost.

got some new head bolts and a couple new clutch bolts today and lashed on! Strange one on the gasket blow.. i had noticed when i took the turbo off there was white blobs in all the ex ports (you may be able to see in some of the pics) which is coolant thats boiled (shouldnt be there).. on removing the head the bottom gasket seems to have failed EVERYWHERE.. the two gaskets were stuck together but the coolant had spilled everywhere across all cylinders and ports.. tempted to take it back and try for a refund as it must be a faulty item! will see if it leaks this time round...if it does its getting broke lmao

looks like the turbo mani has been blowing a tiny bit too, gonna make the stress cuts on the flange a little deeper and make sure theyre nipped, i think the flange maybe a touch warped off the welding.

im gonna do some photoshops once the car is all white and see what happens.. i think i might do the boost pipes at the front white..and the end tanks on the cooler..and do the core black so its not as noticeable when its all back together

had ten mins earlier so went to investigate..cause its been doing my nut why it wouldnt start the other day ;)

quickly realised the fuel pump wasnt priming.. to which i blame matt todd for saying to me the other day.. i bet i get mine running and the head gasket goes and when youve done your head gasket youll have immobiliser issues! lol you sir, are a JYNX!!!!

traced it back to a blown fuel pump fuse..no idea why or how..but it fired straight up (no exhaust..the rattling is the exaust hanging on the lower brace)

some real progress today.. got in the unit, messed around for a while.. drank several cans of monster..then got some motivation..ish

fanny'd about and done a few bits and bobs.. decided to polish 2 boost pipes that were a mess.. polished the end tanks on the intercooler... then decided i best stop putting it off, put it back together and filled with coolant

fired it up and tried to bleed it up.. took about 5 attempts.. was shitting myself as the header tank just keep filling up and i had to keep knocking it off..was getting pretty worried as the top rad hose just wouldnt get hot.. i didnt know if the donkey rig id set up for the fans was gonna work lol

in the end i wound up leaving the bleed valve on the rad open and let it piss about 1.5 litres of boiling coolant allover the unit and it seemed to be sorted!!! :D soon after that the fans kicked in and all was right in the world!!

head seems to be holding up.. im guessing it was just a duff gasket, yeah i think ill drop the boost back a touch and see how it goes, last thing i want is it bursting before the summer ends :n:

spent most of the day on the car again.. shit loads of rewiring as none of the lights worked, or the horn or the washers or the fans :D took most of the day

looking like a car again..bit worried about the fact its smoking blue atm..but i did have it running while it was jacked up on once side for a while so hopefully it just needs to clear...

took it for a quick blast up the street.. for being a crap 10psi map..its QUICK

Cooling issue I put to bed today. The smoking issue I've not sorted. Seems to be getting worse so I'm guessing it's the rings that are goosed.

Not gonna strip it all apart I'm just gonna map it and run it till it fails or the end of the summer comes. Cba to take it to bits again, I'll do it over the winter

Cheers dude. It's got the wrong oil in but it's just for mapping, as you say it's not gonna fix but it may reduce a touch

got alot more done today, mainly tidying cables and piping up etc, sheathing the fuel pipes and so on, changed the pads from the m1144's to some TRW ones ash gave me the other day.. the m1144 are just no good for the road..on normal driving they dont work at all

took the car to have a crack in the downpipe welded at a mates garage and broke down on the way home lmao.. looking like it was the neg battery lead coming off but ill have to keep an eye on it! ive brought the car home tonight and started to machine polish it (dunno why its a total clip..but it is coming up alot better)

the drive there, altough off boost(can still pick up A LOT of speed) was nothing short of awesome.. ive adjusted the seat to a position im alot more comfortable with..and the grip on this car is totally amazing, perfect road set up. chucked it into a really tight right hander at fair speed and the way it held up and just powered round really surprised me!

got a call back to say mapping is booked for tuesday tonight, too :y:

In the middle of going booste 16v Xsi. Have the turbo manifold and going t25. I've a decomp plate there and wonderin what boost to go and what size gaskets to uses on each side.

cheers mate, you could run on the standard compression just fine..lots do now, im just running 1.9mm gasket..id steer away from the decomp.. i had issues with one when i fitted it the second time round on my vtr. just bang a 1.9mm in youll be fine unless you wanna go stupid boost

What is it you want to know?

Went for mapping today.. Failed. Clutch slipping badly, suspect oil on the plate.. Car is dieing/spluttering/knocking soon as it hits boost.. Knocked ignition and boost right back to no avail.. Exactly the same as it was in the vtr which was the reason it came off the road. Suspect ecu is the problem

car has been in neglect since i cant use it without risk of killing it, but ste kelly was kind enough to drive up with his ecu (djx11b's) and let me try it on the car, car worked as it should other then clutch slipping, think im gonna have to get that recon'd as i spilled oil on it so it seems to be fooked :n:

but i now i know the ecu is the problem.

Cool hope to run a 1mm plate with 2 0.63mm gaskets are u running standard management. Thought u could only run around 9psi like that on standard engine.
