View Full Version : Nicole's black ek9 - Poorly 9 and Teesside track time pg7

Hey guys :zainy:
Some of you may have seen the new one already...
But I might aswell start a thread!
She's a 1997 ek9, imported in 2008 on about 39000miles, and is now at 59000 - so a nice low mileage example. It was fully undersealed on arrival and all previous owners were enthusiasts who seemed to have dry stored it every winter! :A:

so spec:-
Meister R Zeta S coilovers
5zigen Pro racer exhuast
ITR airbox
and that seems to be about it! a fairly nice unmolested example - exactly what I wanted! :homme:

Plans:-
Get some bodywork done. Someones tried to break into it in the past and chipped some paint round the doors. The front and back bumper could do with a respray and it badly needs a detail!
Need to look at some ABS wiring as it's had a bit of a tuck, relocation of a few things.
Then for now, I just want to get some decent rubber and get it straight on track!

some pics with good old shizbiz! they'd covered 1300 miles between them that weekend so they're both filthy! Sax had just done a track day too and I think I might have upset something, not sure why her arse is in the air!haha

http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3756/12596830753_37c3ee8834_z.jpg

and a few shamelessly stolen ones from a previous owner as I haven't had a chance to get any yet :(

very nice, the strut brace is standard is it not? had it on all 3 of mine.

Aso you are lucky as fuck to have found a black one with the owner wiling to sell.

Also let me know if you need any front end parts i have a front end shell in my lock up with quite a bit left on it.

Nice car nicole, seems a very tidy example!

18th February 2014, 08:54
Love it. Just get a flapwheel on that strut brace and tidy it up a bit.

It's one of those cars that I always wanted when I was younger but I'll probably never own now. The temptation of V-tec never out weighed RWD.

haha I do have some ideas on what I want the bay to look like yup :) not a fan on the whole red honda thing now I've got it home :homme:

Hopefully I wont be needing any front end parts! But thanks :y:
It is standard yup, they just look so flmisy and pathetic haha
I saw it for sale last year and really wanted it then, then the guy who ended up buying it decided to keep his s2k so I had to have it when it went back up for sale! The only other black one I could find was in Ireland, looked an absolute minter but he had no service history.

That would be a civic Jordan if I'm not mistaken
I think they're are actually a few yellow ek9s, Id hate to have one and it be mistaken for a jordan all the time :homme:

Not me ! theres another two tone vts?!

Looks nice, it has potential.

Love the rocket launcher, lol. I know it's a JDM Sc3n3 thing.

It's actually really really quiet! Looks like it should be a horrible booming chavbox, but its just subtly sporty :A: and i quite like the blue tip  lol

D4MJT
18th February 2014, 15:04
Ah I couldn't see if it was definitely a 2 tone or not, I just saw it nipping onto the roundabout from the garage and it sounded a bit fruity.

How much does something like that cost (if you don't mind me asking)?

Does look great in black.

Apart from the not as common part, i don't understand why anyone would pay the premium for an EK9 over the better, and cheaper DC2.

I got it for a really good price imo. fresh imports I was looking at 8k and they were struggling to find decent black examples!

Loving the power difference, but I've gotta be honest, I still miss my saxo haha!

Does look great in black.

I dont really like the DC2 looks and dont want to pay the extra on insurance. These are a lot less common as you said, and it just really does it for me in black. DC2 looks so outdated, and I think these still look good for such an old car!
plus they're really holding their value, even over in japan :)

nicole_
23rd February 2014, 22:17
so the car went off to the bodyshop yesterday. miss it already ha
It is a minter, and tbf, you'd probably not even notice the bits on the car, but I want her perfect :homme:

after a having a look round the car, its having both front bumpers, both doors and rear quarters and round the drivers side door, plus a machine polish!
someones tried to break into it at some point on both sides, and made a bit of a mess... so these will all be gone..! :A:

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7374/12729383745_df9006937e_z.jpg

theres scratches on my bonnet, and one on my rear quarter - they should hopefully polish out

neither bumper sit properly either, so that will be sorted :)

and one of my scabby engine bay...
http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5541/12729397745_b0e89c907d_z.jpg
and one before she went off to the bodyshop!
http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2866/12729449185_ed41756cec_z.jpg

excuse all the watermarks, i dont think its seen a coat of wax in a while and ive only jetwashed it off since i got it as i knew it was going straight in the bodyshop. full detail when i get it back though :D

oh, and stickers will all be coming off and new genuine decals need to be sorted! £120 for 3 stickers!!!!!!

tbf, it's one of those things you wouldnt even really notice unless someone pointed out to you!

I'm getting it done for a decent price by someone who's ten times more anal than me, and i knocked most of it off the price of the car, so its not too bad :)

I see your point, but tbf, its 17 years old and the only bad points were where someones tried to break and someones been careless with 3 scratches, and thats it in really. no rust, no dings, nothing! :) I'm still happy :)

Photos are awful - I really cant do night time car park shots :wall:
SO happy with them, turnarounds been immense and everythings just perfect. He's replaced everything so it all sits right too :) And even polished my headlights :y:
After a polish, my bonnet and roof look horrendous, so many imperfections! - they'll have to be next on the list now! And if im doing those, the side skirts and bootlid may aswell be done too - Full respray then :panic:

nicole_
2nd March 2014, 20:39
Rightttt... I wasn't joking about a photo overload..
Saturday was detailing day! Obviously the fresh paint is mint, the rest of the car had a machine polish too at the bodyshop, but I didnt really wanna leave it all unprotected. So picked her up as you saw unwashed..
http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3830/12882289725_f70b6cf652_z.jpg
I wish id got more before and afters of the stages..but anyways
washed with megs gold class, APC in arches and iron X on my wheels.
Annoyingly after getting rid of the dirt, you can now see they're going to need a refurb.
http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3755/12882291495_f872d0a1be_z.jpg
Sonus green clay on the side skirts and round the number plate - nowhere else really needed it.

AF Tripple with a rotary on the bonnet and bootlid - Couldnt reach the roof properly so decided to leave it :wall:
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7458/12882716574_2418c71b49_z.jpg
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7414/12882432313_a314bb7679_z.jpg
tbh, the bonnet and roof both badly need a respray too and I wish Id had them done now - but they'll do for now :(

Then went round the whole car with Carlack68 cleaner.
Next was CG blacklight, was really looking forward to trying this, and I'm really happy with it. This was then followed by Vic's Concours Red Wax - Love how easy this is to work with. only managed one coat in the end. Will top up with two more next times its washed! Doesnt seem like its going to be very hard wearing so i might even stick some colinite 476 on till the better weather!
and the results -

cheers everyone! I'm over the moon!

I might get some chrome bulbs for the front. I'm undecided about the rears, it's a pre-facelift and they come with the orange rear lights, I;m tempted to keep it as oem as poss so the orange will probably stay!

moreeee cleaning lol :panic:

Took the car to the jetwash (I dont have a pressure washer or anything) and thought I'd give the underside a proper blast off after the salty wet road weather. So annoyed i didnt take my camera, by the time I'd remembered, I'd already jacked the car up..so sh*tty iphone photos will have to do :(
Pretty happy with the condition of the underside tbf.. Scuse the state of her, was pre-wash!

Engine bay also got some loving today - not entirely sure when the last time someone cleaned it was tbh haha
G101 at 1:10 sprayed and left, then agitated and lightly sprayed with the hose. g101 again and hosed, then dried and dressed with Aerospace 303 and paint in the engine bay gone over with AF Tripple - super happy. didnt take many photos and the engine bay will look totally different soon, but it was bugging me...so :D

Do people you work with or family give you stick for driving an older car?

It just seems everyone round here drives corsa D with black alloys or 1.0 eco boxes

So track day imminent...Went for my favourite combination of ds2500's and ATE super blue! Brakes felt awful before, could of just been a case of rebleeding and being too used to a large brake set up before, but I'm much happier now with them :)

https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3829/13112689133_ae9c063b01_z.jpg

Bought the car with oil down the left side on the engine, pooling on the headgasket and running down the gearbox - camshaft seal came with the car so i put it on today - all sorted
cover off, oily head and old seal...

So I am stupidly in love with her haha
Well Cadwell..what can i say..absolutely LOVED every second. She was perfect the whole day, the track is incredible and I had the most beautiful weather all day. She used no oil, no brake fade, crappy road tyres even lasted the day without giving up. Car handles brilliantly, loved hall bends so much and it felt amazing round mansfield at the bottom of the hill and up the chicane towards the mountain!
Really felt the lack of torque however with all the hills. It's hard to explain but I was honestly expecting a little more from it. I love it in second, it feels like it pulls the whole way, then you change to third and it feels like it's just taking it easy again untill you're in the last 2k-ish when it starts really pulling again - same with 4th but there's even less pull. Wondering if the intake could have something to do with it, so I'll be taking both on my next track day, but it could well be gear ratios or my driving style haha
also desperately wanting uprated engine mounts, hate the feeling of it moving so so much when im used to a car with solid mounts ha

Some photos (I'll be buying them when they email me back - but these will do for now!)

Looking good such a good colour polished up my a/c is going this weekend too and tbh I don't rate the whale intake its almost like it needs to take a big breath and then delay then it goes, but when I squeezed a smaller cone on it felt more responsive think im going to buy a mugen/Tegiwa carbon intake have a look in to them just a tad expensive.

Agree with Danny on the 'whale', they sound good but that's about it.
I had the tegiwa/mugen copy on my DC2 and they do make a difference, especially on track.

I was following my Dads B18'd EK on track and when he had the whale on, I could see a little puff of smoke every time he hit vtec. Changed the filter to an enclosed one on the recommendation of a vtec challenge racer and it immediately stopped.

Looks good though! Get yourself over to Hondas on Track, great bunch on there and there is a Croft track day on the 4th July :)

Yeh,you see I never really drove it hard with the ITR airbox, so I dont know how it's effecting the car. So I'll definitely be taking them both with me next time. I've seen the mugen/tegiwa ones, but I dont know if I could justify the price to be honest! If one came up for the right price second hand maybe, but I've heard people happy enough with the airbox. The things that are frustrating me I think are going to need fixed with some changes to gearing/possibly a remap. I know it's got 185bhp, I just dont feel it till everythings already pretty much passed me and it finally starts pulling. The power's just there too late! I was expecting it to keep up at least with the likes of a 182. Although, I dont know if it was standard or not.

I'll be down to watch that Croft day on 4th July! I know they want pretty experienced drivers for them so I'd not book on haha. Looking to book Croft in June with this for sure though :)

You really have to ring their neck to get them pedalling but you'd be better off with the standard airbox and spending the money on handling!
The HoT days are great for beginners too as long as it's not your 1st ever day. A girl called Livvy did her 1st Trackday there in her Teg last year, pretty sure she's going again.

They share the day with Lotus on Track and the majority of those ponses spend most if the day drinking tea lol

I spent most of the day on the limiter haha :panic: it's no problem keeping it in vtec changing down etc. the vtecs there at 6.2, but I dont really feel it start pulling again until say 7.5+? No idea if that's normal
I saw somewhere its for intermediate/advanced peeps which put me off haha :( Croft if defo my next track for sure though!

Yeah that sounds normal closer to redline more power they make mine peaks at 8400rpm and getting used to vtec is weird I think im still getting used to it obviously not been on track like so can't comment but ek9 should be upsetting alot of cars when you get used to it.

Is it worth sticking it on a dyno to get a ballpark figure of what it's actually making? As you say, it should be making 185ish but if it isn't that would certainly go some way to explain why it feels a bit off and isn't staying with Clio's etc.

vtectransplant
24th March 2014, 12:04
Tbh I wouldn't expect it to be as quick as a standard Clio 1*2 round Cadwell, although 185bhp, they haven't got the torque of the 2litre and in full fat mode are a smidge heavier. Running the same tyres/pressures/drivers there would be feck all in it so all it would take is a few mph better exit speed from a Clio and it'd seem like you were loads slower.

That's the main reason i don't rate the EK9. They aren't as quick as what you would expect them to be, they just don't have the grunt to keep up with the 2.0 N/A hot hatches. I bet a Saxo Vts wouldn't have much trouble keeping up on a trackday.

Same with the DC2. Has more power than EK9, and handles better, yet they can't bother the hot hatches with more grunt and less power.

From sheer grunt alone, i used to upset my mate in his DC2, with my old C20XE Corsa. Weighed about the same, but has less power. But the torque figure is far better so just pulled on him with ease.

I wouldn't let it bother you tbh. As long as you are having fun and kicking its hole in, who cares what's faster.

24th March 2014, 19:21
I've got a RR printout of 179.5hp, so it's not doing too bad for a 17 year old car I guess.

Love the intake martin :y: looks awesome! Love a bit of carbon fibre haha. how are you getting on with it? Did you not fancy a facelift one?

I wish I'd known all this before I got it tbh, I wouldnt have spent all that money on a car that gets pissed on by everything haha. It's fun but it was frustrating as hell. It was meant to be a nice upgrade from the saxo, instead its just turnt into a more expensive version

vtectransplant
24th March 2014, 19:52
You shouldnt get pissed on by everything....the trouble with trackdays is you come up against cars that you 'should' be quicker than but you dont know the spec/weight driver skill etc etc. If you're not quicker than in your Vts then there is something wrong!

My Dads EK SiR before he B18'd it had 172bhp and I lapped Oulton in 2 minures dead. Thats friggin quick for an old nobby Civic but it had $2500 Coilovers, an ACT 1.5diff, carbon clutch etc etc. Telling M3 and GTR drivers its just a 1.6 killed their egos but track focused cars compared to pretty standard cars isnt a fair comparison!
My best in my DC2 was 2.08. 8 seconds is an age but on paper, it was 'about the same weight', 'about the same power'.

The trouble with them is, they always get compared to newer more powerful cars then get slated. A mid 90's Saxo has the same cc not far off the same torque but 60bhp less. On track, standard vs standard the Saxo would get murdered. Who last drove a Saxo on here on standard height suspension?!?
The Honda is seam welded, has a diff etc etc so although its a 1600 hatchback, its really not in the same league and not fair to compare the two but that doesn't make either a better car!

EKs are awesome cars when comparing against other standard cars but unfortunately 99.9% of us havent got standard cars!

Just enjoy it, its a beast.

Anyway...todays progress..
Removing the aircon bits out from inside the dash. Fiddly little job this ha.

took it apart to remove all the components inside the box. was so filthy inside, was definitely worth doing as it's just dead weight in the car!

Let the "I slayed x, y, and z" and "you should be faster than x, y, and z" crews get on with it - you don't know what's been done to the cars you meet on track days, or whether the owners are driving them slightly reserved, or with no fear of bashing armco. As long as you have fun and improve over the day, where's the issue. You've only had it a few weeks and it was your second track day?!

The EK is a brilliant package and fair fucking play to you for keeping such a good example and using it properly. Some sticky rubber and a bit more suspension travel will have you taking corners even faster, so don't give up on the old girl yet.

Also I thought this was pretty interesting...after cadwell, I've had problems with my wheel nuts coming loose (I actually lost one or two) on my front wheels and have to keep re-torquing them. I'm guessing these have been powder coated at some point...

Wheel on the right is a front wheel, note all the whites gone from where it meets the hub compared to the rear wheel to the left!

And where the coatings all burnt off round the edge! Pretty hard to get a photo of, but this lips huge!

I dont really trust these wheels at all haha, so I'm pretty happy ive got different wheels for track now :)

Also did my centre caps as they were looking pretty sad!

Next up was my engine bay....!
I have a thing for dark/stealthy looking engine bays so the cam cover went off to my painter for smoothing and painting, along with my brake stopper as that was looking a bit tatty...
New stainless bolts for the stopper, skunk2 oil cap, passwordJDM carbon plug cover and black stainless dome nuts for the cover and I got these back!
Such a hard colour to photograph, but its a deep dark anthracite and I love it!

Also relocated the throttle cable and rerouted the wiring that normally lies over the strut top/wing to the passenger side to tidy everything up a bit :)

Next was Mimms! I have to admit I was a little sad mine blends in quite a lot as shes totally OEM looking, but I do love it, and people who can appreciate a mint oem car gave me some lovely comments :) Went for little photoshoots with peeps while I was there, would of been rude not to!

Finally...I've taken my whale ***** off. I love the noise, but I didn't feel like it was doing the car any good, she did feel really hesitant between gears, and as much as I miss the noise, I'm a lot happier with how she drives :)
Thought I'd hate the look of my bay without the carbon, but I really prefer it!

Went to the Yorkshire dales to see Mr Marv and his little red beast! I know I have the ek9, but these little french hatchbacks will always have my heart haha. Sure this little GTI needs no introduction, it's defo a bit special <3
Oh, and the roads here are just incredible!

On to the next weekend, woke up early before work to swap my wheels over...ready for some track time at Japfest :D
https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5559/14067029048_aa61d91257_z.jpg

I loved the actual show itself, such variety and some really lovely examples about
https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5489/14159078205_6295bcddd7_z.jpg

really wasn't keen on the track. Had two sessions where it luckily dried up for both of them! Absolutely loved my tyres, what a difference to Cadwell on road tyres! Bit sketchy when they had mud on them and were cold but were brilliant :) Absolutely hated the track - was sent round the whole show from the stand to get on and it took 40 mins to get through the crowds and was late getting on track so was pretty flustered as it was. Felt a bit lost on track for the majority of it, surface is horrendous and really unsettled the car, was a boring fast loop that I felt didnt really suit the ek9 at all? The evo's flying past must have been loving it but the highlight for me was two little chicanes and thats about as exciting as it got! Really gave the poor car some abuse not being able to decide what gear to be in for 75% of the corners/bends, but I guess it's something I'll learn over time
little bit of footage from the side of the track :)

I think my engine mounts had been going for a while beforehand as recently I'd been getting a massive slap/knock from the engine moving when changing down gears etc, so bought these pretty little lightweight things! <3

Went to fit them and realised I didnt have the bracket/bolts with them that I needed to fit, but in the mean time got my torque mounts off!
safe to say the passenger side one was pretty f*cked!

Interesting read about Combe, I found it pretty good fun tbh, Quarry is a good laugh and by the end of the day I was loving coming down through Tower as well, you can pretty much throw it into the corner then straighten up and just let the car fly out the other side as you drop down the corner. It is a fairly quick circuit though as you say, I guess it probably feels slower if you're getting passed by Evo's etc. I was down on FCS so everything was fairly similar, bar JP lashing past everything at about 15k revs.

Whaddya reckon to the RSR's then? Are they any good? Loads of people seem to rave about them but they pretty much 'look' like a road tyre to me? Are they in a similar ballpark to say the AD08?

Wow this car is so clean and just keeps getting better, 100% agree with you on the whale cock now im back on standard air box so much better in the lower revs and i found it quite noticable in mid range when dropping a gear for example and I don't really miss the noise tbh I made up a cold feel out of the resonator box piping if you want me to send you a picture can't see it from the bay and just sits nicely in the front quite low down lots of nice cold air.

That stut brace is nice too mighy have to invest where did you get it from if you dont mind me asking ?

Just a word or warning with the federal rs-r's btw, mine did this after about 9 months and 3k of driving...

cheers guys :)

I've got all my engine mounts on, valve clearances have been done and car feels spot on now. I'm absolutely loving it as it just doesnt feel like it needs anything at all atm <3
A bit more power would be lovely, but how it feels to drive is great. still has a skittish back end but I'm just learning to drive it that way haha

No idea, they said they wouldnt run unless 20 booked, and they must of cus its going ahead - but about 3/4 of the people I knew going aren't now so it might be pretty quiet.
I've never been on track there, and I know its tiny so not sure what to expect, couldnt really grumble for £35 and it being less than an hour away!
Will be taking it easy anyway with Croft coming up :)

Yeh, I think for the price it'll do to give the 9 a run out. I'm determined to try every track once haha :homme:
Just know it's gunna be a lot of abuse for my low gears if I dont wanna drop out of tec :panic:
If I enjoy Croft on friday, looking to book a date at the end of August again, should get involved :y: Sucks the two tracks near us are either too small or too expensive haha

Ahh wonder if its the same day! Dont think theres many dates at the end of August. I'm trying to get a few people booked on too! :D

Cadwells only 30 more miles than knockhill tbf, people never seem to realise. It's awesome and you're less likely to end up with some radgy evo in the side of your car too haha

Skipped Teeside on 1st July, had heatstroke and was stupidly sick all night before it, went out to change my wheels over the next morning (in the sun erghhh) and was sick again so decided not to risk it with Croft 4 days later. Re-booked for 11th August though so we'll see how that goes!

Recovered for Croft with Hondas on Track. Was actually really dreading this as I feel a bit of slow newbie compared to the majority of people booked on. Really enjoyed the day! Track was nice and quiet which suited me when I was trying to find my way round for the first time.

Some footage, I wish my car was more exciting to watch haha. Was getting to grips with it finally then shortly after it p*ssed it down after this so I called it a day and went home -

Decided I'm going to book on 29th August and go back and spend a bit more time there :) last track time of the year before she comes off the road in September!

decided to sell on my Japfest2 tracktime as it felt a bit of a waste now I know the cars so low on power and Donningtons not the best for slow cars as it is. I'd have probably spent the whole time miserable, and I dont really know whats up with it, so minimal abuse atm.

Although I did go to a local track, Teesside on Monday night. £35 for 3 hours so I couldnt refuse. It's mainly a go kart track and used for drifting but I still had a lot of fun! the car was griefing some quicker cars even with only 115whp haha

What do they 'make' from factory?

185 bhp at the fly, last dyno day i went to most ctr were kicking out 145-160 atw, mine made a 134 atw.

And nicole are you 100% its running a standard ecu and not a socketed one ? i would be borrowing another ecu to check if thats the problem then if not possibly fuel pressure reg, injectors, maf, process of elimination, as they hit vtec the map should go rich hence the puff of black smoke that most b series get as they hit vtec, also i have heard of sticky/faulty vtec solenoids that cause lack of power there easy enough to take ofd and give a clean/inspect.

Hope you get sorted.

Nice motor hope you got it sorted.

I've never understood people putting these on coilovers (unless professionally done with corner balancing) as they are properly balanced from factory on the OEM suspension, plus Honda even made an optional dampening adjustable N1 set for them.

Wills 9 is a beast though.
