Started getting a whiny noise seems worse in 1st to 3rd gear but I can also hear it in 4th and an intermittent grinding noise in neutral with the clutch depressed. Any ideas?

release bearing probably, or the front bearing in the box

I thought this but it's only making a whining noise in certain gears?

it probably whines in all gears just the road noise or engine noise is louder than it, stationary with the clutch disengaged the gearbox is stationary no no gear noise or gearbox bearing noise, and its intermitantly whining... my money is on release bearing... its common on these because its a manual cable and very few set them up correctly...

Ill admit mine is setup wrong, but the clutch will outlast the gearbox so for 11quid or whatever a replacement is swap it when i wreck the gearbox(s).....

Sweet. Just moved down to Surrey so going to have to ask around where's good to take it. Haven't got the time to break the Haynes manual out!
