hi all, just registered for this site this morning. anyway i currently own a citroen ax, while it is a decent car for nipping about in, it just doesnt have enough power and definielty not enough grip cant count the amount of times ive almost left the road cause the tyres are too damn skinny!!

was thinking about upgrading to a saxo vtr, ive heard the insurance is quite cheap and theyre not too bad on fuel while still being decent to drive. so i just wondered if theres anything i should look out for when buying, like any known faults on saxos, and what sort of price im looking at. im thinking of the 98 bhp model (S reg onwards, silver top engine) phase 1 model. any help or pointers would be appreciated. thanks

welcome

id just look out for the usual things as you would any car really
be carefull of accident damage

the 98bhp model is the mk2 from 2001 onwards iirc

98bhp model is x-reg registered after september 2001. look out for worn rear axle bearings, jack the car up and check for play in the rear wheels, gunk under the oil cap, and as paul says just the usual used car checks.

the 98bhp model has 3 plugs coming out of the ecu and the catalisic convertor is in the manifold

90bhp models only have 1 plug out of ecu and cat undercar

cheers guys

so whats the difference between the older phase 1 black top engine (P+R reg) than the newer silver top, besides a different rocker cover colour?

the newer ones have coil packs so there for dont have HT leads

the older ones do

so all the phase ones have 90 bhp then, i thought that the different colour cover meant different tappets and therefore 98 bhp but i guess not. i was deliberately going for a slightly later phase 2 model for this reason, but i might aswell go for an earlier one (P or R reg) to save a few pennies. id go for a later one but prefer the front end of the phase 1, and cause im at uni, forking out for a phase 2 will probably put me on the streets.

one last question, do you reckon a phase 1 vtr will stand a chance against a 99 plate focus 1.8 16v zetec (113 bhp) my mates got one and itd be a laff to beat him!!

thanks all who replied!!

sorry also what do you guys reckon would be a reasonable price to pay for a decent saxo, im thinking about 1500 quid. ive had dodgy cars in the past and dont wanna run the risk again, lost a lot of money!!

yeah it does have diffrent tappets iirc

the saxos lighter then the focus so might do not that racinngs big or clever

the black rocker type as only 90bhp and the cat is under the car, which is better if you want to put a 4 branch manifold on it. silver rocker is 98bhp with the cat on the manifold.

the saxo is better on corners but its downside is on the straight against the focus.
but like hesslevtr said "its not big and its not clever"

hang on then, just to clarify cause theres a bit of difference between what you say, so a silver rocker cover = 98 bhp, and a black one means 90 bhp no matter how old the car is?

yeah racing is a bit daft, done sum pretty dumb stuff in cars, plan to go easy on the saxo though wen i get it

thanks mate, id give you some respect or something if i knw how to!!

not necessarily, read my first answer. silvertops before serptember 2001 only had 90bhp, these also have the cat under the car same as the blacktops. can just as easily put an aftermarket manifold onto a 98bhp model.

the newer ones have coil packs so there for dont have HT leads

the older ones do

mines a 1998 (s) mk1 and its got coilpack.

mk1(1996-99) aggesive look model
90bhp
sq headligths
cat under car

mk2(1999-2003) the soft to look at model
98bhp
teardrop headligths
cat on manifold

the 8bhp difference makes no difference on the road in power.
