Well, I said I'd keep it totally standard, but already I'm doing stuff (small things but wants!) so thought I'd start a thread... Why the fuck not.

Anyone that knows me knows that "keeping it stock" means "keep it stock for a few days, then cave and modify the fuck out of it... FML.

First up, passenger side wheels are scuffed - bloody idiot previous owner obviously couldn't park for shit...

Spoke to a wheel refurb guy who was doing my neighbours car yesterday by complete coincidence, and he's offered to do them for £240 including any colour I want. And there's the first problem ;)

Dark anthracite I think Longer term, I'll probably dechrome the car (optic pack for those in the know), so black grille surround, black roof rails etc. wheels hopefully would be suitable.

My dad would wet himself lol, his got a A4 Avant S-Line 2.5tdi and currently wants the rs4 grill and the rs4 wheels.
Looks nice though I love Audi's.

I've just shot my bolt!!

I don't like chrome trim either, will look much better with the pack on. Have you not considered saving a few quid and getting the chrome wrapped?

Ross
23rd March 2014, 15:25
Yeah I have considered it mick but don't know about the finish on the fiddly bits like the roof rails. If I can find one that's been done well I'll reconsider for sure :)

I want privacy glass too but torn as to go proper and just do rear or "fuk da police" and do the whole car. Let's be honest, whole car in a light tint would look epic...

Wheel colour?

SaxoKid95
23rd March 2014, 15:33
I think it perfect as it is I would get the wheels refurbed and the glass slightly tinted.

Ross
23rd March 2014, 15:37
I don't dislike it now obviously. But then you gotta look at tints and an optic pack which gives you this:

Recently had it back from Audi after replacing a DRC shock (and a full DRC drain and recharge), CV boot and a few other small jobs (brake fluid change etc). Now it's simply mighty handling again and I love it. So confidence inspiring now the suspension is sorted again!

Anyway - it's off to AmD in Essex for a decoke as there's no history of it ever being done and the car's got a lot of miles on it - so I would say it's probably about 50hp down on standard right now. That'll be the first week of May.

All I've done so far is choose a place to do the window tinting (Trade Tints - only 1/4 mile from my house so perfect - they're crazy recommended by loads of people I've spoke to). I've also replaced the DRL's with white LED's rather than the standard bulbs - always thought it was odd the headlights are so awesome but they are let down with the yellowish DRL's. Looks much better now. Also replaced all interior bulbs with white LED ones - really brings it up to scratch.

That's all until I get paid now as I've spent too much already this month lol - wheel refurb and tints next, then the decoke and maybe a cheeky remap... We'll see what funds allow.

An AmD map will give you 300bhp exactly.

No mention of a Milltek or other such noise maker yet?

Ross
18th April 2014, 13:48
Already has a non-res, non-valve miltek. Thank god - because I can't afford one :p

After a decoke and a remap I'd like to see about 430hp. Should make the car come alive.

Thanks Aly - It's never been decoked so it's booked in with amd essex in two weeks for the work. Hopefully be night and day!

Ahhh that'll be OK then, dervs are good for huge mileage, we all know that.

Petrol engines self destruct randomly at any point after 100K miles, so Ross is fucked basically.

Installed first part of media centre yesterday. Raspberry pi with wifi, controlled by Bluetooth/wifi/remote, has wifi so can stream anything on internet (spotify or iplayer or whatever). Also has 1tb drive attached for music and movies. Syncs automatically when in garage with my main media centre.

Part way through install:
17685

Last week the car had been down at AmD in essex being decoked. It was officially the worst coking they had ever seen apparently. Down to all the motorway miles the car has done.

17686

17687

17688

Now:

17689

17690

Power went from 334bhp before to 435bhp now. Turns out the car already had a remap on it. Combined with the miltek and a k&n gives this very healthy figure 20hp up on standard.

So as a reward I treated it to a caliper repaint today as they were quite chipped. Next I need to do the bells as they have some corrosion but I'm very happy with the calipers now.

17691

17692

17693

Full LEDs all round now, drl's, sidelights and numberplates. Also fully led inside brings it up to date.

Gearbox and rear diff oil change tomorrow just for peace of mind.

That's it for now. :)

Broke the fucking windscreen yesterday like a bender. My own fault. Repair Tuesday as (speaking of benders) national windscreens can't come to repair it until Tuesday.

In other news I had a full service and another CV boot changed on Friday. Car pulls so much better now - must be dem new spark plugs!

Also got my brand-new disks and pads fitted - stops as well as it goes.

I think with being a mod you have a duty to tell what happened so that we don't make the same mistake

Ross
27th May 2014, 08:50
I was prising the a pillar trim away from the screen using a 6" prybar. Put a bit too much pressure on the prybar (whichwas prising against the glass) and the glass just shattered. I knew better but was being very gentle so was trying to be careful.

I just fucked up :)

To put a positive spin on it, the car had 100,000+ miles of stone chips on the windscreen and was typically scratched etc just over time. So getting a new screen is a blessing in disguise. Albeit a £75 lesson :)

H&R spacers fitted front and rear now too. After much research I've fitted 8mm spacers all round - the car already had the optional SS+ suspension so was lower from the factory - with that in mind I didn't want any rubbing even with passengers and dogs etc on board so stayed conservative!

The valves were checked on its last service at 70k and were clean, its only done 2k since then.

Milltek non-res will be ordered at some point this month and I put a revolution induction kit on when I was home last.

Is there any advantage over proper decats as opposed to gutting the originals or is it just what posh people do?

Ross
4th July 2014, 10:14
Gut the pre-cats, leave the main cats. It'll need a remap after gutting the pre-cats though.

The revolution intake is nice looking and sounding, but costs power (same as the Gruppe M) which is why I've not gone for one - have you put in a cold air feed and done the aux rad delete at the same time? That can help. :)

Yeah - the rad delete is a bit of a mission. £200 for AmD in Essex to do it, and I would have been tempted but it was in for £1000 of work already at the time and I just thought fuck it lol. I'm still at 441ps without it so... There's probably not £200 of value in it for me now tbh.

They're geared for 202mph or something, but only the supercharged boys can get there. And I don't want to spend that kind of money :p

Yeah that's it.

Stage 2 MRC mods (like my car) take the RS4 to about 440bhp. Stage 2 on the RS6 takes them to about 720bhp which is where i want to be at really.

Fuck - just messaged you on RS246 (didn't make the bloody connection you'd just bought Mikes exhaust - just asked you if you want to sell it lol - disregard that!).

Cats will be gutted on next visit to MRC (phoning them today actually).

Cold air feed totally worth it. The revolution gets too hot to touch as it is... piss poor design really - needs LOADS of heat shielding (that I've not got round to yet) but sure does sound good...

Bwahahahaha I've been PM'ing you for ages on there. I could be interested in selling the backboxes depending on how they sound with the resonated pipes.

After fitting the Revolution I never looked at it again, didnt realise it was such a massive heat soak but its worth it for the sound alone. I was thinking of the gold reflective tape and creating some kind of heat shield also after reading about somebody already doing it but it wasnt pretty.

Whats your feeling on MRC compared with AMD?

yeah I'm a retard. Never made the connection!

The guy who did the gold tape/heat shield job went completely fucking nuts on it - looked like something out of nasa space program. Too far tbh. I think the heat shield is a good idea as there's nothing between the manifold and the bottom of the intake with the standard airbox removed but not sure it's worth doing all the top in gold etc. Be better to just get more air in that space somehow. Maybe see if one of the undertray ducts can be routed in there somehow - I've not really looked at it closely but keep meaning to.

Regarding MRC vs AMD - I went to AMD first for the decoke. Was a good price (almost half the cost of the MRC decoke). No real issues as such, but my gut feeling was I got a better service at MRC. Real attention to detail, felt like a person not just a "customer". Ended up needing another partial clean at MRC anyway according to them.

Interesting to note though AMD phoned me on a weekend a few weeks back because they'd seen I'd posted that the car needed a clean so soon after they cleaned it. They said MRC are attempting to bad mouth them / run them down subtle like, across forums and in person.

Can't say they did that to me. When I first started going to MRC I said I'd been to AMD - their only reply was along the lines of "Well, I hope you find us better". Nothing wrong with that.

Looked at getting a tubi exhaust (Dean might be selling his as it's so very fucking loud) - so spoke to MRC and they're suggesting a full pre-cat/main cat delete will make a nice noise level increase (and a good performance improvement too) so for now, I'll just get those and chat to / go see Dean in a month or so when he's back and have a listen to the tubi to see if I'm prepared for it!

Drove there and back without fault except a small leak from a power steering banjo on Sunday but was only a few drops so no issue - being repaired today :)

Car was absolutely epic - I love driving this car on the ring when it's slippery out (first thing in the morning was especially bad) but even in the damp we're pulling sub 10 minute laps now. Low 9 minute laps are consistent now, and with more experience there's a lot of scope for this car to get me round a lot faster.

Changed the pads to EBC yellow stuff a few days before going and what a world of difference they made. Seriously great pads. Mega confidence now even on repeated very high speed slowdowns. Very impressed.

Hopefully squeeze in one more 'ring trip (first weekend of November) weather pending of course. We'll have to see but I'm optimistic.

No - there are various freelance photographers that take photos on public days and you have to scour their websites etc for photos of your car - but some are obviously pretty good!

Thats with a gopro 3+Black in a standard case with the open back door. I think it's quieter because it's not in the wind as such but behind the car (despite being 120mph+ at the last part of the vid it seems sheltered).

I've another video from the drivers door I'll put up - that was directly in the wind.

The only issues I had was in Germany actually. Like a mong I didn't know about the German laws (the number plate is a legal document there and fucking about with one is fraud). My first trip with these plates and I had the full stickers on and everything. Got stopped (luckily by a friendly marshal at the 'ring who explained the law) and promptly removed the stickers, and covered up the D.

In the UK I've had no problems at all, but I'm growing a little tired of them already so may actually go back to stock British plates anyway.

As for staying legal - I try to for anything "serious". I'd always declare mods etc, but decats and numberplates? Yeah. Whatever. Popo will just give a fine for the number plates and I can live with that if it were to happen.

This. you can get supposedly legal plates but really who cares.

I've never heard of a single case of someone losing their private registration because of the font or typ of plate they put on the car. The only time you'll lose a registration is if you space it like a spakka, and then really only to spell something offensive etc.

Tax is the same on the 4 as the 6 - £500 a year. £200 more than my insurance - for a car that does 4k miles a year. Go figure.

Brakes again are the same price on the 6 as the 4 - circa £2k for a full set of discs and pads fitted.

MPG wise the 6 is worse (obviously!) - on my last nurburgring trip in the 4, from dover to the ring and back to dover I averaged 14.6mpg. On a run I can get it up to about 22mpg if I drive sensibly. Average day to day is about 18mpg which is fine. From what I read on the forums average in the 6 is about 15mpg which is fine. Same as my old range rover. :)

But yes - you'll need tardis sized pockets to fix anything. Oil cooler replacement (common) - £1500. two DRC shocks and collector fail, that'll be £3k. Tyres are £800 a set, brakes as you said £2k.

They're both great cars but not cheap to run :)

I hate to pop factual corrections/updated info into people's threads (Sorry Ross, I popped in here to drool over the RS) but the fine for plates is now £100.

Depending on the force area (I think most are moving over to it) a traffic offence report is completed for any offences found which is then submitted to the Central Ticket Office who make the final decisions now, they then write to you with either the following outcomes;
1) sweet FA
2) Fixed penalty offered (you can decline and request court hearing)
3) 1 day awareness course (if appropriate for the offence & driving history)
4) Straight to court
You actually don't have to do anything until they've written to/contacted you.

Feel free to PM any replies or Q's if you're unsure.

Edit: the above is the preferred method to speed up the process for single offences or a couple of very minor ones such as the one in question. For more serious offences, a serial offender with poor history whereby any additional points could result in a 'totting up' disqualification, or if an interpreter is required then the Officer can still go down the old Court Summons route

You've got to blame CL a little though - I did wait like 6 months for those pads from them before fitting my yellow stuffs :p

Cadwell trackday booked for next weekend. Don't worry - I don't have rear wheel drive so wont die like some gayboys in german barges might.

Car's back at MRC today for a little map tweak and a change back to the standard airbox (removing my carbon intake as as nice as it sounds, it's costing me power). Might help with track-side noise driveby tests too... I can only hope.

First 'ring trip is already booked - Easter weekend so two months to go and it'll be big smiles again :)

Mods since the last update. Cars had a new battery and a new starter motor which has transformed it's starting eagerness. Also swapped out the RNSE head unit for the Mk2 RNSE LED version - double the resolution, better sat nav mapping, allows much larger SD cards etc.

I've also added an auto switching reverse camera (using the rear dashcam I already had installed), added a new higher quality 2 channel video input, swapped the Raspberry Pi for an Apple TV (modded to run from USB not mains) and added a wifi hotspot. Added a small inverter in the glovebox so I can power a laptop or whatever if I want. Also added in some high power USB sockets fitted neatly into the inside of the glovebox to power things like the wifi hotspot so it's not in the main car. Added Coming Home lights (stay on when it's dark after you lock the car for a bit etc).

Added an armrest (why the original owner didn't spec this I don't know - can't live without it!).

Added a peltor intercom system into this armrest in a quick trick/stealthy way - so now when on track my peltor helmets can be used in car easily.

Rear pads changed to EBC yellows now to match the front too. Not really tested them but Cadwell should put them through their paces.

Changed my dashcam from the chinese brand thing to a blackvue fullHD wifi model - quality is pretty staggering tbh and iPhone control/playback is cool.

Small "fixes" - I've replaced the drivers side b pillar trim as it had a scratch in the fabric. Sorted a rattle in the boot/rear bumper area, and fixed an issue with the glovebox light not working (first world problems).

Think that's it for now. I'm hoping with the intake and map tweak to get a little more power from the old girl - not much but somewhere around 450hp would be nice.

Next up - clutch time (before the 'ring trip in Easter). That's £2k so has to wait until next month. :)

This has made me want a B7 RS4 wayyy too much.

Think I'd part-ex my evo and give a right bollock in a flash for one!

I must also say, I think I'm more fond of the AVANT than the saloon, even though an estate doesn't suit my lifestyle I'd rather have one out the two.

Great video, sounds awesome :y:

When's mapping happening with the standard airbox back on? Be interesting to hear your thoughts on the two

Today.

I'm expecting a slight uplift in power as I say (maybe only 5hp or so) BUT more consistent intake temps which is more important. With the cold air feed (which I've had for a while) it's kinda just loose below the revolution intake pointing at it. When you've got the standard airbox, it's attached the the trumpet so the car really only does get air from outside the engine bay and can't draw anything in from inside. So intake temps are no more than +2 degrees over ambient, even in stationary traffic etc. Ideal :)

I'll miss the noise tbh (but you more than anyone would know the exhaust more than makes up for it).

I've sold the intake already by all accounts (£350) - so that'll go some way towards the new plugs and coilpacks that are being fitted today @ £500!

Cool, be interesting to hear your thoughts.

I'm thinking to do the same when I eventually find the time to send mine down to MRC for CAF, de-coke and remap. I originally only got the Revolution intake for the noise, which is great until you put an exhaust on, as you know. Only downside is the OE airbox looks a bit bland

With the standard airbox back on (carbon one removed) car's up on power to 449hp. Very healthy :)

How many torque's?

I need to double check - it was 491nm before - I think it's 493 or something now - almost identical. I've not seen the graph yet but apparently there's a nice improvement under the curve too - I've asked Doug to do a graph showing the before/after airbox change on the same graph so will be interesting to see :)
