View Full Version : Spelling and Grammar

I know this is a whole can of worms in itself, but I've been bugged by this more than usual lately.

Is it just me noticing that the state of spelling and grammar generally seems to be deteriorating? I find it sad that people who have presumably graduated through the school system and are qualified to drive a car can demonstrate such a lack of general punctuation, grammar and spelling.

It may well be hideously stereotypical and judgmental of me, but I immediately form a negative opinion of someone if I start reading a post and it's 10 lines of solid text, with glaring spelling mistakes and zero punctuation. Above anything in this day and age it's downright lazy. Computers have spellcheckers, incorrectly typed words are highlighted, do some people just have no pride in themselves at all?

It isn't specifically this forum, I've noticed it more and more among others I use as well, and even emails I receive at work from recruitment agents etc. By far the worst is Facebook. Fair enough there's the old txt spk argument, and some people may choose to persevere with it, but that doesn't account for the huge number of idiots who constantly type out "meen" instead of "mean" etc etc.

What's the problem, are modern schools really that bad that after 16 years in the system kids are coming out the other side and they literally can't write a sentence of decent English?

Edited to add: For clarity, I'm not on about your average Joe who posts in a rush, gets a spelling wrong and then half a forum jump on them. There really is no excuse for the likes of this in my eyes though:

It's the same in general everyday life sadly :(

I had to advertise for a cleaner through work recently, half of the 'applications' I just deleted / binned.

Completely agree.

Some friends of mine have set up a business offering detailing and chauffeuring. Every now and then they'll post on Facebook "Who wants there cars doing"?
Just looks unprofessional and would be enough to make me think twice if I didn't know them so well. I feel like a dick for pointing it out to them too, sort of hoping someone else will get there first.

I've corrected someone's graffiti once too, that was a low point in my life.

You have the option to use the fucking apostrophe button

'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' '''''''
It's the same key as the @ on the keyboard, just don't use shift. It's also to the right of ;/: and to the left of the #/~. Underneath the [/{ button and above ?// and shift button!

They aren't the ` button.

Lots of frustration pouring out here.

True but the odd wrongly placed apostrophe, that our long necked poster feels so strongly about is not going to alter the real important things in life.:panic:

Stevo, not to be pedantic, but you're in a thread about spelling & grammar, people are going to point out grammatical errors.

One of which is, as Giraffe said, your continuous use of ` instead of an apostrophe.

Sorry, oh giver of rights on the internet.

I'll try to remember that when my grammar turns to shit and I lose my ability to learn basic things, that I must contribute to the solving of problems of Saxos in order to compensate. Idiot.
