I've just been doing a little research about heat wrapping manifolds as i'll be getting mine soon.

Some people say it's bad for the manifold as it contains the heat, causes cracks and in general reduces the life span of the manifold. On the other hand it cools the engine bay.

Opinions?

I've used it in the past, I don't think I'd bother in the future?

It stinks, it's fucking itchy, it's still fucking itchy months later when you come to do something under the car, forget and brush against it, it smells, and it looks shit instantly in wet weather.

Apart from that it's awesome.

Elaborate on the awesome part.... so far it sounds like zit on a 15 year olds face.

You call yourself awesome regularly, I assume that is also a lie?

No, that's true.

It's the only explanation for my continued survival on this earth despite my best efforts to seriously injure myself through haphazard mechanics.

Imagine Muttley with a spanner, but sexier.

It's an expensive alternative in comparison but for function and form it's all about zircotec coating.

Looks good and serves a purpose, heard a few bad stories with heat wrap but never used it myself. Looks tatty as fuck after a few month to.

can crack at welds, water sits in etc. not nice when it gets dirty.

If you have the monies, i would do the above what matt posted. Expensive like.

heat wrap serves very little purpose IMO, i did it through boredom on my saxo. zircotec is purposeful, you can touch the manifold after a run no problem and it made huge temp drops in the engine bay on my evo

Heat wrap doesn't itch or hold water if you apply the sealant to it after fitting.

I had some on my expensive janspeed mani with sport cat, it didn't last long, all welds on the four branch where it hits the top came open. wasn't pretty.

prev had same mani fitted from second hand for 2 1/2 years no issues, brand new one lasted 1 1/4 year so I put that down to the heat wrap so wasn't impressed. and I didn't see any gains in the engine bay temps as temp needle never sat any different as to it does normally

Temp guage wouldn't sit different as the temp guage measures water temp in the engine.

What it does do is drop the ambient temp with in the bay so the main thing is that air being drawn in by the filter is that bit cooler and denser

On a non-boosted road going saxo? Don't waste your money IMO

unless you buy really expensive heat wrap its utterly pointless as it serves pretty muc no purpose

used to burn my fingers on mine lol

This is the rich mans version of wrapping, which in honesty is worth it in certain aspects, I had my rod bearings coated in a similar sort of way, but its called "calico coating" :A:

Wrapping is just the poor-mans way, its been superseded by coating.

I run both zircotec and wrapping (dei lava rock stuff). Both are designed to keep heat in the manifold, lower under bonnet temps, and speed exhaust gasses (aiding exhaust evacuation). The under bonnet temp reduction is HUGE. I can have a session on the dyno, switch the engine off, and 2 minutes later hold the exhaust manifold. In real terms, under bonnet temps dropped about 25 degrees on average after fitting the wrap to my setup. It especially makes the difference in poor airflow conditions - launches, traffic etc.

Obviously that's a few years ago when I was running performance white zircotec. Note: fucking nightmare to work on the car afterwards!

I put DEI wrap on my manifold and definitely noticed a bit of a difference. With the 16v engine in the tiny AX bay heat buildup is a problem.

I used Mission sun dried tomato wraps on mine, doesn't really keep the heat in, attracts seagulls, but smells lovely

+1 on the ceramic coating its about £300 a manifold but worth it if you are worried about heat

I would strongly recommend against heat wrap after my gearbox exploded, oil dropped onto the manifold / wrap and it set on fire - all while on the nurburgring!

I got lucky that we managed to put out the fire in time before it did any damage.

Get zircotec coating as Ross has posted above
